Beautiful People || Friendship

Beautiful People is a link-up hosted by Cait from Paper Fury and Sky from Further Up and Further In where writers answer questions about their books/characters.

It’s time for another Beautiful People! This time the theme is friendship, and as I love friendship I couldn’t miss this one!

I’ll be answering these questions for Rose, Ashelle and Damien, three of the main teens of my WIP The Army of Quermo.

1. How long have they known each other, and how close are they?

They have known each other since they were babies, as Rose and Ashelle’s mothers were best friends. Rose and Damien were brought together by Egbert, as the Council knew they were the next generation of Chosen Ones. Through Rose Ashelle and Damien also became friends. They are extremely close and share everything (though Ashelle of course doesn’t know about their demon fighting duties at first). They know each other almost as well as they know themselves and joke around constantly.

2. What’s their earliest memory of being best friends?

One of their earliest memories is when Sophie (another main character) steals Ashelle’s Barbie in Kindergarten, so Rose pushes her and Damien glares at her for the rest of the day. No one makes their best friend cry.

3. Do they fight? How long do they typically fight for?

Yes, but they usually talk it out pretty fast (though not without yelling).

4. Are their personalities similar or do they compliment each other?

Ashelle is very lively and cheerful, while Damien is more calm (though he does joke). Rose is like a mix of both of them, it depends on her mood. In this way they all compliment each other.

5. Who is the leader of their friendship (if anyone)?

No one.

6. Do they have any secrets from each other?

Well… At first Rose and Damien keep a rather big one from Ashelle… (see question 1).

7. How well do they know each other’s quirks and habits?

Very well. They’ve been around each other pretty much their entire live, so they know every little thing about each other (which of course can be a little exhausting at some times, as it’s always noticed when one of them is angry, annoyed, tired, sad etc. and thus it’s hard to keep things to themselves).

8. What kind of things do they like to do together?

Movie marathons or going to the movies, going out for ice cream or hot chocolate and other good snacks, talking about everything and nothing, shopping (Rose and Ashelle), karaoke (again Rose and Ashelle, though Damien is almost always dragged along) to  name a few things!

9. Describe each character’s fashion style (use pictures if you’d like!) How are their styles different/similar?

Rose’s fashion style

Ashelle’s fashion style

Ashelle’s clothing style is crazier and more colourful than Rose’s. It’s also important to Rose that she can fight in whatever she’s wearing.

Damien’s fashion style

10. How would their lives be different without each other?

If Rose and Damien didn’t know each other, that would mean they weren’t The Chosen Ones, meaning their lives would be a lot more peaceful and saver. Damien would be living in Amsterdam and Rose’s parents would be alive. If they weren’t friends with Ashelle their lives wouldn’t be that drastically different (though if Rose and Damien were friends and thus The Chosen Ones, Ashelle’s life would be very different and less dangerous), though it would be a bit boring.

And that was it for today’s post! If you want to find out more about these characters, click on ‘writing’ in the menu and then on ‘The Chosen Ones’.

Beautiful People || July

Beautiful People is a link-up hosted by Cait from Paper Fury and Sky from Further Up and Further In where writers answer questions about their books/characters.

It’s been a while since I participated in Beautiful People, since I forgot to do it every month (how did I manage to do that??). Anyway! This time I decided to answer these questions for Ashelle. If you’re unfamiliar with my WIP The Chosen Ones (of which Ashelle is a main character) you can click on ‘writing’ in my menu and then on ‘The Chosen Ones’ for more posts!

1. What’s their favourite ice cream flavour?

Ashelle really loves cookie dough. Damn now I’m craving cookie dough ice cream.

2. Your character is getting ready for a night out. Where are they going? What are they wearing? Who will they be with?

A night out is usually either at Rose’s or at the movies with her friends. There isn’t much to do in Hellburgh at night, and even if there was Ashelle wouldn’t go clubbing or anything. During the weekends she could go to Amsterdam, but only if there’s a concert she’d want to go to. She’d drag everyone with her, somehow convincing them that they too want to go and that they should buy tickets.

Here’s a collage where you can see Ashelle’s clothing style.

3. Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there. Do they wear dress shoes, gym shoes, or none at all? Are they in socks that are ratty and full of holes? What do they consider comfortable and what do they consider agony?

You can see some shoes in the collage above. She also wears Dr. Martens though. She owns several pairs: black with pink shoelaces, the special Hello Kitty Dr. Martens and bright pink ones. Her socks are in perfect condition. She only wears comfortable shoes. If a pair hurts her feet, she’ll never wear them again.

4. Do they have any birthmark or scars? Where are they and how did they get them?

As of right now she doesn’t have any scars, but she will get some in the future. She’ll get them by fighting demons.

5. What kind of music do they listen to? Does it change depending on their mood or is it always consistent? (Feel free to share samples!)

Ashelle loves J-pop, K-pop and Jedward, though she also enjoys listening to Taylor Swift. She prefers cheerful music and that doesn’t change with her mood.

6. Do they have any musical talent? Play an instrument? How’s their singing voice?

Nope. She likes to pretend she has a great singing voice (she calls herself ‘the queen of karaoke’), but she knows she’s terrible and that Rose is the one with the X-factor talent.

7. What kind of book would you catch them reading?

Ashelle loves manga, preferably shoujo, though she has read some other genres. When it comes to books she reads about everything young adult, as long as it’s not horror and the blurb sounds interesting enough. Fun fact that has nothing to do with this question: she loves drawing fan art of her favourite books.

8. How would they spend their summers (or their holidays)?

She’d go on holiday with her family for one or two weeks and the rest of it she would spend drawing, watching tv shows and anime, reading, meeting up with her friends… Just normal teenage stuff! Oh and fighting demons might happen occasionally as well. That’s less normal for a teenager.

9. It’s Saturday at noon. What is your character doing? Give details. Ex. If they’re eating breakfast, what’s on the menu? Are they hiking, shopping, lazing around?

She’s either making homework (depends on how much she needs to do) or drawing, while in the meantime messaging with her friends. On some Saturdays you might find her shopping (she can’t go shopping every week. I mean, who can?). If she doesn’t have any homework and neither do her friends, they will be hanging out, though they usually do this in the evening.

10. Is there anything your character wants to be free of?

Her self-doubt when it comes to her art and acting.

Beautiful People || Valentine Edition

Beautiful People is a linkup hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up and Further where writers answer questions about their books/characters.

This month’s Beautiful People is all about romance. Lately I’ve been in a Ashelle x Dan mood (which is quite funny, as Dan doesn’t even appear in the first book which I’m still working on), so I’ve decided to answer the questions for them!

1. How long have they been a couple?

They become a couple in probably the third, maybe the fourth book. I’m planning on the third book, but I can change my mind. They might not even end up together…

2. How did they first meet?

Well, Rose and Damien capture Dan (this sounds a lot wronger than it is) and bring him back with them to the Council, where Ashelle meets him.

3. What were their first thoughts of each other? (Love at first sight or “you’re freakishly annoying”?)

Dan has basically been kidnapped and doesn’t like any of them. Ashelle thinks he’s evil so she doesn’t like him either.

4. What do they do that most annoys each other?

Ashelle teases him to no end (everyone does, actually), which in the beginning gets to his nerves, but he quickly starts to tease back. They way Dan can talk about humans really annoys Ashelle, though she does understand where it comes from.

5. Are their personalities opposite or similar?

Ashelle is quite naive, while Dan is the complete opposite. Dan has some trust issues, while Ashelle is way too trusting. They both can be cunning though.

6. How would their lives be different without each other?

If they never met, Dan would probably still be in hiding with Ryan, though it can’t be said for sure that they would survive. Coming to Hellburgh was their best decision, as Dan got involved with The Chosen Ones which led to protection.

The only human Dan would trust would be Ryan and he would remain untrusting and negative. Ashelle’s life wouldn’t be much different.

7. Are they ever embarrassed of each other?

8. Does anyone disapprove of their relationship?

The Council, but they don’t have any in it. They don’t keep their disapproval a secret though.

9. Do they see their relationship as long-term/leading to marriage?

Not at first, but when they’re nearing graduation they do.

10. If they could plan the “perfect outing” together, where would they go?

Is it cheesy to say that it’s perfect as long as they’re together? It is, isn’t it?

I think they’d go on a roadtrip in Mexico, as that’s were Dan comes from. They’d also set out to find his village, which won’t be easy.

If you’ve done this, let me know! I love reading everyone’s answers to Beautiful People. Also, how perfect is that gif I found? Bless the people who make these crackship gifs.

Beautiful People || Author Edition

Beautiful People is a linkup hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up and Further where writers answer questions about their books/characters.

This month’s Beautiful People focusses on the authors instead of the books. Here are the questions:

1. How many years have you been writing? When did you officially consider yourself a ‘writer’?

I have been making up stories as long as I can remember. I don’t know the exact age I started to actually write them down, but I wrote my first book when I was nine/ten years old. That’s also when I started to really consider myself a writer I guess.

2. How/why did you start writing?

I honestly can’t remember! I know that the book mentioned above isn’t the first thing I wrote down, just the first real book. Before that there were countless of (mostly unfinished) stories. I just loved making up stories inside my head, and I think I started to write them down because I didn’t want to forget them. That is still one of the reasons I write now.

3. What’s your favorite part of writing?

Just watching the stories inside my head come to life. That sounds like I’m not the one making them come to life, but I think you understand what I mean.

4. What’s your biggest writing struggle?

Self doubt. Not a very original response to this question, but it definitely is.

5. Do you write best at night or day?

It really depends. Sometimes I have great inspiration during the day and then I’m done and tired in the evening so I stop. Sometimes I’m tired during the day and get adrenaline and inspiration in the evening.

6. What does your writing space look like? (Feel free to show us pictures!)

Let me search for some pictures on my laptop since I’m too lazy to get up (not to mention my desk is a bit messy). Unfortunately I can’t find any. I’ll show you guys someday. I usually write at my desk, where I have a cork board on the wall with some inspiring quotes and David Tennant telling me that I should be writing. I always have my notebook on the desk as well and of course my laptop. My playlist for The Chosen Ones will be playing in the background.

7. How long does it typically take you to write a complete draft?

I wish I could tell you guys that it doesn’t take me that long, but I can’t. Life gets in the way too often, not to mention I tend to overwork myself when it comes to school so I’m exhausted a lot during the schoolyear. I hope to write more this year and finish the second draft of The Army of Quermo. I don’t remember how long the first draft took me, but it was over a year.

8. How many projects do you work on at once?

One. I used to work at ten or so different stories at once, and it wasn’t working. At all. These stories still live inside me and one day I will rewrite them and finish them, but not right now. I’m going to focus on The Chosen Ones.

9. Do you prefer writing happy endings, sad ones, or somewhere in between?

Somewhere in between I think? I don’t know, it really depends on the book.

10. List a few authors who’ve influenced your writing journey.

J.K Rowling, Rick Riordan and Anne West.

11. Do you let people read your writing? Why or why not?

Sort of? When I finished the first draft of The Army of Quermo I let my then best friend read it and my mom. I think I also let my brother (from another mother. Sorry I couldn’t resist) read it, but I’m not sure. He did read this short story I once wrote for art. I was super nervous about that, but I wanted to make sure there weren’t any mistakes and an opinion.

My mom has read the new prologue for The Army of Quermo, but that’s it. I don’t like people reading my unfinished work.

12. What’s your ultimate writing goal or dream?

Find my own books at the bookstore. My books making people happy and feel better. And just so many more.

13. If you didn’t write, what would you want to do?

Ever since I can remember I’ve had two dream jobs: journalist and author You can’t just become an author, sadly, so for now I’m going to try and become a journalist. I’ve always wanted to work for a magazine or newspaper, so I guess if I didn’t write (fiction) I’d still write, haha.

14. Do you have a book you’d like to write one day but don’t feel you’re ready to attempt it yet?

Yes! I have a series planned that revolves around time travel, but that will require a lot of research and I just don’t have the time for that.

15. Which story has your heart and won’t let go?

Besides The Chosen Ones, the first book I ever wrote (mentioned in question 1). I plan on rewriting it one day. I just loved writing it and I miss the characters.

Alright, that was this month’s Beautiful People! It was a lot of fun and if you’re a writer I recommend you to do it! If you’ve already done it, let me know so I can read your answers!

Beautiful People #1

Beautiful People is a meme hosted by Paper Fury and Further Up and Further In. This one is actually from June, but it just looked like fun!

1) What is their full name and is there a story behind why they got it?

Rose Clarke, though it used to be Ashley and I’m pretty sure the last name was different too… There isn’t really a story. I like the name Rose and the nicknames/abbrevations you can come up with and I just like the sound of Rose Clarke.

2) How old are they, and when were they born?

Rose is born on the 27th of November in 1996. In the first book she is 14 years old.

3) Describe their physical appearance. (Bonus questions: 1. What is their race/nationality/ethnicity? 2. Do you have a picture of them? If so, include it!)

She has dark brown hair, shoulder length. Straight bangs. Usually in a ponytail. She has blue/greenish eyes and is 1.71 cm at the beginning of the series. I’m sorry I have no idea how much feet that is. It is a regular length for girls here in the Netherlands. She is Dutch, though with English blood. She also weights 60 kg. She has to stay in shape!

She dresses up in clothes she can easily move in, as you never know when a demon might attack. Thus she hardly ever dresses up and never paints her nails (ain’t nobody got time for that).

I don’t really have a picture of her, but I do have these:

4) Describe your character’s personality first in one word, and then elaborate with a few sentences.

One word! Damn. (That’s not my one word description)

Afraid. I’m having a deja vu by the way.

Rose is one of the Chosen Ones, meaning she has to fight demons and make sure the devil doesn’t return to Earth. She has good reasons to be afraid. She is also insecure and emotional, though she hides all of this quite well.

5) What theme song(s) fit their personality and story arc?

Oh I have several songs! Paradise by Coldplay and Human by Christina Perri are probably my favourites for her.

6) Which one of the seven deadly sins describes your character?

I’m not ashamed (okay, a tiny bit) to say that I had to google what all of the seven are again.

I think envy or wrath. It also really depends on what book in the series! In the first book I wouldn’t say wrath.

7) If they were an element (fire, water, earth, air), which one would they be?

8) What is their favourite word?

She doesn’t have one.

9) Who’s one person they really miss? (It could be someone who’s passed away, or someone they’re not close to anymore, or someone who’s moved away.)

Her parents.

10) What sights, sounds, and smells remind them of that person?

Pictures, her godfather, her grandparents, seeing her friends with their parents, the flash and sound of lightning.
