Magical Girls Save the Day Once Again in Zodiac Starforce

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve always loved magical girl anime. So naturally I was really excited when I discovered Zodiac Starforce. Which means I really want to make all of you excited about it. Right now there are five issues: four in the Zodiac Starforce: By The Power of Astra arc and 1 in the new Cries of the Fire Prince story

So why should you read it? I’m glad you asked *finger guns*

💛 If you love magical girls, why are you still here? Go go go!
💛 It’s a very diverse group of girls too!
💛 Different ethnicities, different sexualities and different personalities of course
💛 There’s an f/f relationship that’s major to the plot!
💛 Friendship!
💛 The art is beautiful and of course magical
💛 It skips the whole origin story of how the girls became magical girls (and friends), but it does so in a clever way – I was never confused (though now I want the origin story)
💛 While it’s definitely not as dark as Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, it does cover the darker side of being a magical girl
💛 But it’s definitely not that dark! I mean, it definitely gets dark at times, but overall it’s still a light and fun read
💛 Their ‘magical girl identities’ and powers are based on their zodiac signs, which I personally find really cool
💛 They have really cool weapons and magical powers
💛 Healthy romantic relationships!
💛 Realistic teen texts (there’s one convo between two of the girls that is definitely me and one of my friends)
💛 It’s funny!
💛 Did I mention the art and their outfits and hair I am in love
💛 It’s fun!

But my biggest reason why you should read it really is magical girls. I mean, girls who are often still feminine and girly (and they’re allowed to!) who kick ass? How could I not love that! How could you not love that?

Have you read Zodiac Starforce? Or any other magical girls comics that aren’t that popular that I should read? Or maybe underrated magical girl anime that I should watch? Let me know in the comments!

Brave Chef Brianna: Cook With Anxiety in a City Full of Monsters

It’s time to talk about another favourite comic! This time it’s Brave Chef Brianna‘s turn, which sadly only has four issues. Though the story is wrapped up neatly and more issues aren’t necessary, I just want them! Four issues is way too short for me haha. So what is Brave Chef Brianna about?

Brianna’s father sets her and her brothers a challenge: the sibling with the most successful restaurant will earn the family empire. There’s only one restaurant allowed per city and Brianna decides to start hers in Monster City.

So why should you read it?

  • Brianna is a great character. She has anxiety which is portrayed in a very realistic way, which she constantly battles which is very inspiring to see. Despite her anxiety she doesn’t give up
  • It takes place in Monster City, so there are lots of interesting characters (almost all of them monsters)
  • Supportive friends!
  • Especially girls supporting girls!
  • Great art – characters don’t look the same, it’s colourful yet also fits the sometimes darker atmosphere
  • Fun recipes (at the end of each issue a recipe is included)
  • Basically it’s just a fun read!

Though I wish the story had delved a bit deeper into the history of Monster City and the reasoning of its laws, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was a fun read and I especially appreciated Brianna’s portrayal of anxiety. I’d definitely recommend this one (plus it’s a short read so what’s stopping you?)

Have you read Brave Chef Brianna yet? What did you think? Any other comics with great portrayals of anxiety you think I should read? Let me know in the comments!

Goldie Vance: Black Queer Female Teenage Detective

You may know that I’ve been reading quite a lot of comics lately, and today I wanted to talk to you guys about another favourite that deserves more love (obviously all my favourites deserve more love but ssh), namely: Goldie Vance

Goldie Vance is about a teenage detective solving, well, mysteries obviously. It takes place during the sixties and is just a lot of fun. So why should you read it?

  • First of all, because it’s about a black queer female teenage detective!!
  • Goldie is such a fun character
  • All characters are so colourful and unique
  • Goldie has a cute girlfriend!!!
  • It’s a fun read
  • It takes place during the 60’s yet has a diverse cast
  • Girls who race!!!
  • Girls who work on cars!!!
  • Girls who love cars!!!
  • Lot’s of girl power and girls supporting girls
  • There’s more to the mean girl than meets the eye (which honestly is one of my favourite tropes I can’t help it I’m such a sucker for it – maybe because ‘the mean girl’ is a far more used trope??)
  • It’s funny and just delightful???
  • THE ART. LOOK AT IT. IT’S SO CUTE AND COLOURFUL
  • And the clothes omg I love the clothes
  • Positive parental figures and positive relationships with their children
  • Good mysteries!
  • Basically: read it??

I hope my fangirling was useful to you and convinced you to read it haha. Do you know any similar comics or books (besides Nancy Drew) that you’d recommend? Have you read Goldie Vance? Let me know in the comments!

Rock and Riot – It’s Like Grease but Queer

I’m back to talk about more comics! Before I talked about Shoot Around and Lumberjanes, today it’s Rock and Riot’s turn (and believe me there are a lot more coming).

So what is Rock and Riot about? Taken from the comic’s tumblr:

Rock and Riot follows the tales of opposing teenage gangs in the 1950s with an LGBTQ theme! Will the teams set aside their differences to fight for what they have in common?

Doesn’t that sound great?! If that hasn’t convinced you yet, here are some reasons to read it:

‘LGBTQ THEME’ IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION

No one’s straight?? There are so many different gender identities and sexual orientations in this comic it’s amazing! There are lesbians, bisexuals, panromantics, pansexuals, demisexuals, asexuals, trans characters, an agender character, aromantics, a genderfluid character, a demiboy, a bigender… And I think I haven’t even mentioned all of them at this point. IT’S GREAT.

NOT JUST LGBTQ+ DIVERSITY

Not everyone is white yay! And so many different body types!! That no one gets shamed for!!

CHARACTERS ARE UNIQUE AND RELATABLE AND JUST GREAT

Sometimes I hate myself for adding titles because honestly what can I add to that. THEY’RE JUST GREAT OKAY. They’re all so cute and funny and relatable sfnsghd I love them. Also they’re so much more than their gender identity and/or sexual orientation, though they are topics that are dealt with

THEY ARE IN GANGS

Which is so much fun! Like not the killing kind of gangs but the ‘I am cooler than thou’ kind of gang with amazing friendships. There’s a girl gang (with a trans girl in it!), a boy gang and an entire gang of teens who don’t stick to the gender binary and they’re definitely the coolest gang.

SUPER CUTE RELATIONSHIPS THAT WILL BE THE DEATH OF YOU

I’m not joking you will die

BEST COMING OUTS EVER

I don’t want to spoil anything, but… IT WAS GREAT. I need to see more of these

CUTE ART STYLE

Just look at it! It’s so cute and colourful

IT TAKES PLACE IN THE FIFTIES

Honestly I love the fifties but… Not good times. So it’s great to see a story take place in the fifties and be so diverse and positive (though there are obstacles as well of course, especially a big one going on right now but it looks like the characters will fight it yay!)

It’s just super fun and cute and relatable and so diverse!!! It’s great trust me. I already linked to the tumblr where you can read it, but I’ll do it again. So if you want to read this amazing comic (YAY) click here.

Are you reading Rock and Riot? What do you think? Are you reading any similar comics that you’d recommend to me? Let me know in the comments (fun fact I wrote comics instead of comments at first woops)!

Friendship to the Max! | Lumberjanes Review

Last year I read quite a lot of comics, but one of my favourites was Lumberjanes (which is still ongoing yay!) So what is Lumberjanes about? Good question.

Lumberjanes is about:

  • Girl scouts
  • Adventure!
  • FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX
  • Gods
  • Magical and supernatural creatures
  • Magical/supernatural woods that are probably alive
  • Mysteries!
  • Camping
  • Healthy, supporting girl friendships
  • ADORABLE relationship between the girls and their cabin leader
  • TRANS AND NON-BINARY CHARACTERS
  • TWO GIRLS SLOWLY FALLING FOR EACH OTHER AND BEING HELLA CUTE
  • That’s not the only same-sex relationship tho
  • Unique characters
  • AND LOOK AT THEM
  • THEY’RE NOT ALL WHITE

Aaand I just realised I also basically listed the reasons why you should read Lumberjanes oops.

So Lumberjanes is about five girl scouts and their cabin leader who discover that their camp isn’t really normal, nor are the woods the camp is in. They’re very badass and smart, yet also funny, loveable, with their fears and flaws. The Lumberjanes motto is basically ‘friendship to the max’, which is at the core of the story, even though it explores other kind of relationships and important issues as well. It’s kind of hard to explain it, because Lumberjanes can be a bit odd, especially in the beginning when you have no idea what’s going on, but it’s definitely worth it.

I can’t even put my love for Lumberjanes into words. I have so many feelings for it.

Other reasons why you should read it:

  • Very pure and cute and fun and hilarious
  • Though it also gets intense
  • Did I mention the diversity (not just among the main characters!)
  • Also I love how the smollest of them all is super strong like hell yeah
  • And it shows that there are different kinds of intelligence
  • The art style is so cute and pleasing to look at but can also be emotional when needed and the hilarious expressions are so on point
  • The worldbuilding!
  • It’s so relatable
  • Gender roles? Who needs those?
  • Because I said so

Are you reading Lumberjanes? What do you think of it? Do you have any comic recommendations for me? Let me know in the comments!

PS. THIS IS A SCHEDULED POST I’M SORRY I NEED TO TAKE A MOMENT TO BE PROUD OF MYSELF

High School Basketball Team Trying To Live During the Zombie Apocalypse A.K.A Why You Should Read Shoot Around

Man that is a long title

I’ve wanted to write this post basically ever since I started obsessing over reading this webcomic, but for some reason I just didn’t get around it. So what is Shoot Around? Here’s the summary from the artist:

When a zombie apocalypse hits during the practice of a high school basketball team, it’s a whole new life for the coach, Jeff. The world’s turned upside down and the girls seem to be handling the changes way better than Jeff, who has troubles adjusting. A close-knit group of friends, the girls are eager to tackle this new world with its challenges!

Now that you know what it is, why should you read it?

IT’S NOT ABOUT SURVIVING, BUT LIVING

I mean yeah, it’s about surviving too because they have to fight off zombies all the time, but the comic focusses more on living during a zombie apocalypse than surviving it, which is really cool. It’s about the girls and their relationships with each other, their coach and the supporting characters. It just so happens that there are zombies here and there and that the world isn’t such a happy place anymore.

SUPER DIVERSIVE CAST

Out of the seven main characters, only one of them is white. One of them is transgender, and only one of them is supposedly straight (I mean right now she has a possible male love interest but who knows what happens in future comics). And that’s just the main cast. IT’S GREAT. Though the romances are not always that great. Some are ADORABLE and OTP-worthy, but others will break your heart into tiny little pieces for the girls to play basketball with

REALISTIC, RELATABLE AND LOVABLE

Speaking of the cast, I love them all and they’re all my precious babies. No one hurt them. I will fight zombies for them. I shall protect them.

BUT ALSO BADASS

Like seriously these girls guys. The zombies attacked and they just took care of them. Were they terrified and stressed? Yes. Did they and do they still kick ass? Yes

IT’S HILARIOUS

Seriously the humour is so good. Suspu (the artist/author) easily goes from a serious to a light moment, without it feeling off. I’ve laughed out loud so many times. And it’s not just the dialogue, it’s the expressions drawn as well.

THE PLOT DUH

God guys I just want to rave about it all BUT SPOILERS. It’s just so good. I read all the chapters that were out back then in like a day. And I’m so devastated that I now have to wait every week (though of course it’s also great because it means I have something to look forward to

JUST READ IT

If zombie stories are usually not your thing, don’t worry. It’s not about the zombies like I said in my first point. It’s about the girls. It’s also not that gruesome, so don’t worry about that! The art is actually quite cute for a story with zombies haha (though the zombies are not cute of course).

BUT PLEASE READ IT ON WEBTOON

Please please please read it either on the Webtoon site or the app (seriously recommend the app). Don’t read it on other websites and support the amazing Suspu okay? I mean it won’t cost you anything! But it does mean the artist gets paid

So are you reading this amazing Webtoon? Seriously I’m reading quite a lot, but this one is my ultimate fave so if you’re not *nudges you* GO READ IT. Do you read any other online comics? Let me know in the comments!
