Why You Should Watch One Day At A Time

As promised, here’s a post on One Day At A Time and why you should watch it (I’m actually quite impressed with myself how quickly I’m writing this post after saying that I would haha).

Because I love lists, here’s a list of reasons that will hopefully convince you to watch One Day At A Time:

  • It’s about a Cuban family
  • The mom has PTSD and it’s handled really well
  • Therapy and drugs are normalised
  • Also she’s a war veteran and she’s badass
  • She’s such a cutie pie they’re all cutie pies
  • The daughter is a huge feminist and stands up for so many important causes
  • Also!! She’s gay!!
  • Shows that you can be catholic and gay/support your granddaughter (seriously that scene is amazing)
  • The son has some ‘feminine’ traits but is never looked down on or anything like that for it
  • So!! Many!! Important!! Topics!! Are!! Covered!! (and it only has 13 episodes??)
  • It’s hilarous
  • But also really touching and important
  • Family dynamics!!
  • Talks about immigration and deportation
  • Talks about mansplaining and so many other topics that you barely ever see in mainstream media??
  • Doesn’t romanticise abuse!!
  • The only sort of white main character is basically there to teach the audience about racism and feminism and it’s fab
  • Also he is really willing to learn and immediately listens when he’s told he’s wrong (like when he comes in wearing a Fidel Castro shirt he immediately takes it off when they explain to him why he shouldn’t be wearing that)
  • Basically it’s a gift from the heavens and I could never do this show any justice just watch it and please support it (it’s already been renewed for a second season!! but still support it so we can get many many more)

Have you watched One Day At A Time? Did you like it? Let me know in the comments!

TV Shows I’m Currently Watching | Part II

Last August I talked about tv shows I was watching and I thought I’d do a new post, because in the meantime I started some new shows (some of which are on hiatus right now sadly) that I want to share with you all and hopefully get you to watch them as well (well with an exception). Of course there are some shows from last post that I’m still watching (like Jane the Virgin and The Fosters, though the latter has just gone on hiatus and oh my god does anyone watch it because that finale??? ARE MY BABIES GOING TO BE OKAY. Okay I know they will because they always end up okay, but what if this time they don’t??) So here are some of the shows I’m currently watching!

BROOKLYN NINE NINE

On one hand I regret not watching this sooner, but on the other than I would have had less episodes to bingewatch. I don’t even know where to begin with this show. It’s just amazing? The cast is incredibly diverse and talented, it’s genuinely funny and never offensive (this statement better not come back to bite me in the ass but I highly doubt it because this show is just so pure??)   It’s pure, hilarious, lighthearted (though also tense at some points), iconic, important – just do yourself a favour and watch it

Hint: it’s Brooklyn Nine Nine. The people want Brooklyn Nine Nine

ANDI MACK

GUYS. GUYS THIS SHOW. I LOVE IT SO MUCH (I mean I love all of the shows on this list but I’m so shook). It’s a Disney Channel show and it’s?? So good?? It features an Asian-American family (including a biracial relationship), a black girl and a Jewish (rumoured to be gay???!!) boy. It’s really mature and genuinely funny. There have been two episodes out so far but it really looks like it’s going to be an important show. It already touched important topics in two episodes and look at that cast!!

THE FLASH

In August I mentioned how I had watched three episodes of Supergirl which I liked, but also bored me a bit. Soon after I finished season 1 and loved it though. The crossover with The Flash really made me want to watch that show, so I did! Ironically I kind of dropped Supergirl, but I am still watching The Flash (I really, really don’t like the turn Supergirl took. It’s nothing like the first season and I hate Mon-el). The Flash isn’t perfect either, but I still enjoy it a lot and I love the characters. I do wish we could get more female characters though. I was thrilled when Jesse Quick joined the show, but it doesn’t look like she’s going to be around much. Oh and I love that Tom Felton is now on the show because! Draco Malfoy paralells and jokes! Also I’m still dead because of that proposal

POWERLESS

MORE PEOPLE NEED TO WATCH AND SUPPORT THIS SHOW IT’S SO CUTE AND FUN AND LIGHT. If you don’t know what Powerless it’s about, it takes place at Wayne Security and is about this group of coworkers who live in the DC universe and have to deal with the consequences of living with superheroes and villains. It’s really fun and unique and I love all the references. Also it has a great, diverse cast and talks about some important messages. Basically please watch it so it gets renewed okay?

DOCTOR WHO

Okay so technically I’m not currently watching this as the new season hasn’t come out yet, but I don’t care I’m going to include it anyway, because I’ll be currently watching it soon. I’m so pumped for this season, which I haven’t been in a while. BILL POTTS EVERYONE. BILL. POTTS. LOOKS AMAZING AND FUN AND SHE IS THE FIRST GAY COMPANION AND SHE’S ALSO BLACK AND JUST??? FINALLY.

SHOWS THAT ARE ON HIATUS

  • TEEN WOLF: Again. Last time Teen Wolf was also on hiatus, but now I’m waiting for 6B instead of 6A. While I’m still really upset about the way they treated Arden Cho and I really missed Kira (plus there were so many times that Kira could’ve been necessary for the plot but?? ‘her story is over’??) , it was actually a really good season. AND MY OTP IS CANON FINALLY
  • ONE DAY AT A TIME: I won’t say too much about this show, as I’m planning on writing a separate post on it as it deserves that but please do yourself a favour and watch One Day At A Time it’s brilliant
  • VOLTRON LEGENDARY DEFENDER: This is such a fun show – it really reminds me of ATLA, which makes sense because I think I read that a lot of the ATLA writers are working on Voltron? I’d say bingewatch the entire two seasons but that cliffhanger… Wait until season 3 y’all (though that one will probably end with a horrible cliff as well lmao)
  • MIRACULOUS LADYBUG: Okay so… I started watching this and thought it was fun and cute and now I’m kind of obsessed?? I really need season 2 please thank you
  • YOUNG JUSTICE: Last time I couldn’t get through to season 2, I’m not sure why because I bingewatched it and I loved it?? I didn’t have any of the problems that I had last time, so maybe I was just not in the mood for it (or maybe it’s because I had some months to accept that some of my favourites were no longer mains). ANYWAY SEASON 3 GUYS AAAAH
  • THE REAL O’NEALS: I guess? I don’t know if it will be renewed and I’m not sure if I want it to be. While I recognised its flaws during season 1, the protagonist did blackface in season 2 and there was a horrible biphobic joke – and in both situations the show didn’t apologise for it. It’s such a shame because the show had so much potential but these two incidents really left a bad taste in my mouth

Are you watching any of these shows? What is your favourite show that you’re watching right now? Anything you’d recommend to me? Let me know in the comments!

Blogsterdam: KITTY EDITION 2.0

Blogsterdam is supposed to be a monthly thing but alas, the blogger behind this blog is very forgetful. Anyway, Blogsterdam is a blogging series in which this forgetful blogger talks about her hometown Amsterdam, as the city is so much more than drugs, cheese and the Red Light District.

Yes it’s true, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. It’s truly time for another Blogsterdam! KITTY EDITION (if your wondering why it’s 2.0, check out my post on the Cat Boat!). I mentioned going to a cat cafe last month, and I finally got around to writing about it.

thumb_img_4700_1024 thumb_img_4701_1024

The cat cafe is called ‘Kopjes’, which is both the Dutch word for ‘cups’ and a cat rubbing its head against you (I couldn’t find a translation for this word). When you walk in you get to the register where you need to wash your hands and can buy some cat merchandise.

thumb_img_4702_1024 thumb_img_4805_1024

Behind the register you go through the door to the cafe area where the cats live. The cafe is very cozy and full with cat related stuff. Like the menu has a cat on it of course

thumb_img_4714_1024 thumb_img_4706_1024

thumb_img_4727_1024 thumb_img_4763_1024

Of course I don’t remember everything that was on the menu, but I’d really recommend the red velvet cake.

thumb_img_4726_1024

Basically, if you like foods and cats this is the place for you. Now, time for what I’m sure you’re all waiting for: CAT PICTURES

thumb_img_4764_1024

Meet the cats (unfortunately you can’t really read their names in the picture sorry about that)

thumb_img_4730_1024 thumb_img_4728_1024

thumb_img_4736_1024 thumb_img_4739_1024

thumb_img_4738_1024 thumb_img_4758_1024

Look at that cheeky leg

thumb_img_4723_1024 thumb_img_4713_1024

Story time: I was petting the first cat, but all of a sudden it moved like it was going to bite me. So I took the hint and left it alone. I sat back down in my chair next to my friend and all of a sudden the cat charged me. I thought it was going to attack me (we both did), then it jumped on my lap, jumped to my friend’s lap and sat down. IT WAS SO RUDE. I WAS GIVING YOU LOVE AND ATTENTION EARLIER WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HER.

thumb_img_4715_1024

Look at her face lmao

thumb_img_4809_1024 thumb_img_4761_1024

LOOK AT THE TINY AMSTERDAM HOUSE THEY HAVE

I don’t wanna play favourites but… Tiny (the one in the house) is my favourite

thumb_img_4768_1024 thumb_img_4783_1024

thumb_img_4771_1024  thumb_img_4781_1024

CAN YOU BLAME ME THOUGH I MEAN LOOK AT IT

thumb_img_4784_1024 thumb_img_4796_1024

thumb_img_4797_1024 thumb_img_4788_1024

thumb_img_4794_1024 thumb_img_4799_1024

Seriously recommend this cafe if you’re a cat lover. I had never been to a cat cafe before this one, so I don’t have anything to compare it with, but I really loved it.

Important information:
Address: Marco Polostraat 211
Opening hours: Wednesday through sunday 10.00 – 19.00
It’s best to make a reservation! You get two hours at the cafe
Also you need to pay three euros entrance (do it for the kitties)
You can only pay with a debit or credit card

Have you ever been to a cat cafe? Or something similar? How was it? Let me know in the comments! Also if you have a cat please share some cat stories with me I love cats

Reacting To Negative Moana Reviews

Last night I finally saw Moana and as expected – I loved it. Thankfully it lived up to my expectations (though I expected Pua to play a bigger part but I’ll get over that once I get a Pua plush no worries), yet of course not everyone liked it. That is to be expected. There are people out there who – GASP – dislike Harry Potter

Anyway, somehow I stumbled upon some reviews, and not all of them were positive. I accept that some people might have found it boring, but I just had to write a reaction post to some of these.

There are NO spoilers for Moana. And please don’t take this post TOO seriously.

review1

I saw the complaint of the ‘Disney formula’ quite a lot and I’m just here like: well what did you expect mate? You went to see a Disney film, of course it’s going to be ‘typical Disney’.

review2

Gosh gals, can you imagine what it would be like to be portrayed wrongly?? In all seriousness I wonder where they’re getting the idea that male characters are often portrayed this way, as they say that they’re ‘tired of seeing it’. Um sweetheart, there are a lot of brave male characters? If you mean in Disney: well hello Captain Shang, for example.

But of course the icing of the cake is ‘having sons, it would be nice to see a movie where a young man is the hero’. Those poor boys. Having no male heroes to look up to. Only about 99% of all the heroes. It should be 100%.

Dear reviewer, if you’re looking for a movie with a young man as the hero, might I suggest pretty much any other movie out there?

‘Too many of Disney’s childrens movies feature a heroine with weak male characters around her’ how is Maui weak did we even watch the same film

review3

This reviewer should definitely not watch Les Mis if they couldn’t handle Moana

review4

”I hated this movie lets blame Crooked Hillary”

I mean the start of this review tells you enough you need to know about this person but… I don’t even know where to start?

‘Leading women in every single darn gosh movies’

Please introduce me to all these female-led films that I’ve apparently missed out on

The next one is my favourite though

review5

Moana is turning our daughters into ‘harry’ lonely cat people with no children of their own guys. THE HORROR. Assuming she means ‘hairy’ instead of ‘harry’ I wonder how Moana is going to make  little girls hairy. Are they going to grow more hair everywhere due to seeing this movie? Are they going to refuse to shave their armpits and legs because of it? I am intrigued.

Also dear reviewer, she can watch any other Disney Princess movie (except Brave, I suppose that one will turn little girls into hairy lonely cat people too – also how can a cat person be lonely. THEY HAVE CATS. THEY’RE LIVING THE DREAM)

I’m not going to bother with the other negative reviews. Because while I’m trying to make light of them, they’re also really bumming me out. I mean… you don’t want your daughter to know it’s okay to not have a man? That she can be happy and succesful without one? (also I didn’t even screenshot one that questioned the films logic: ‘HOW CAN A GIRL BECOME CHIEF DOES THE ISLAND HAVE GENDER EQUALITY WHY DO THEY NOT EXPLAIN THIS’ because gender equality should be the norm and not be questioned sweetie)

Have you seen Moana yet? FANGIRL WITH ME IN THE COMMENTS! Unless you didn’t like it, that’s cool too. And if you haven’t seen it yet: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR

What I’d Change In Winx Club (Besides Making It Gay™)

Winx Club was my life when it first aired here in The Netherlands. I think I was about eight and I lived and breathed Winx Club. I watched it over and over again, bought all the magazines so I could keep up with the comic, collected the stickers, we pretended to be the Winx at the playground (because I wanted to keep everyone happy I settled to be Kiko because everyone was already fighting over which fairy they wanted to be so yeah I played the rabbit omg is it weird to call my younger self Pure™) and I even got to see the musical (I still have the dvd and cd somewhere and I’m so tempted to rewatch it because nostalgia).

And you know what? I still love Winx Club. I haven’t seen it in years and I wouldn’t call myself a fan anymore, but I love what it stands for and what it meant to me as a child. It’s a show about six girls kicking ass and saving the whole magical universe. Do they sometimes need saving from the Specialists? Yeah, but they need to be saved by the Winx too (a lot if I remember correctly) and they fight side by side. Plus half of the Winx aren’t white and they all have their own unique personality (at least in the first seasons, don’t know what happened in later ones). They love dressing up and shopping and that’s never frowned upon. And Tecna being into technology? Yes please. I just really love this about Winx Club.

That said, it’s not perfect. And there are some things I’d love to change.

Realistic and Diverse Body Types

Okay so these aren’t exactly realistic right? Their waistlines are just… Kind of scary? Fun fact: I started to draw people like this because of Winx Club and my grandfather who can draw very well was just like ‘no’ (he was probably screaming on the inside). Other fun fact which is unrelated to the topic: I’m pretty sure I had this picture as a puzzle (now I want to puzzle). Anyway it’d be great if they could have more realistic bodies and if they weren’t all thin! We need more body positivity

Less Straights

bellaaesthetic

Bloom x Stella aesthetic I made I’ve decided that their shipname is Bella which means beautiful and this ship is beautiful so there you go perfect shipname

My title already gave it away, but if I were in charge of Winx Club I’d make it Gay™ (I’d apologise for the overusing of ™ but I’m not Sorry™). I’d make Stella and Brandon bisexuals. I don’t know if I made this up, but I remember there being an episode in which Stella and Brandon tried to get the most phonenumbers or something? So Stella and Brandon could easily get phonenumbers from the same sex as well and ta-dah everyone knows they’re bi. I also like the idea of Stella running into an old classmate (in case you forgot: Stella had already gone to Alfea the year before the others) and she’d casually mention to the others that she’s her ex when they ask her who that was. Also come on where are my fairy girlfriends and witch girlfriends? And fairies dating witches? (Mirta and Lucy thank you please). Also I headcanon Bloom as a lesbian (no one bring up Sky I’ll just bring up compulsory heterosexuality) and I’m trash for Bloom x Stella even though I’m also trash for Stella x Brandon (why were Bloom and Sky seen as the power couple of the show when that spot clearly belonged to Stella and Brandon) and I don’t ship Brandon and Bloom so polyamory is not an option here and I’m torn.

I have so many more headcanons, but let’s get to the next thing I’d change

Co-Ed Red Fountain

You know what's weird. The school is already called Red Fountain when it still looks like this, but the name doesn't make sense until the new building is revealed?

You know what’s weird. The school is already called Red Fountain when it still looks like this, but the name doesn’t make sense until the new building is revealed?

Okay I’ll accept that only girls can be fairies or witches (but omg trans and non-binary and genderfluid fairies and witches) but why are the Specialist only boys? Technically the fairies and witches fight too, but the boys use weapons which is seen as ‘for boys’ so it really bothers me. Thus Red Fountain would be co-ed and girls who’d rather fight with weapons attend it too. I think Aisha would love to fight with weapons as well, so she’d follow some classes there while being enrolled at Alfea (students of Red Fountain would be able to take classes at Alfea as well if they have magic) and there she’d meet her future girlfriend (Aisha x Nabu can still happen, I don’t remember the relationship that well since I only watched season 3 once). And just… Let girls fight with weapons please

Dark Bloom Would be Actually Dark

Okay she wouldn’t straight up murder people and rip off body parts, this is still a kids show, but I remember that Dark Bloom just… Didn’t do much? She laughed evily and attacked if Darkar told her to, but it was very anticlimatic (maybe this was only the case in the Dutch dub? I don’t know).

Don’t Reduce The Trix To Weak Servants

The Trix were so COOL in the first season. They were actual villains to look out for and then in season 2 and 3 they’re just reduced to that season’s villain’s servants and they were so lame. Especially when they were fighting for Valtor’s love just jsgjdfg. No. Let them be sly, calculating, manipulative, let them be the Trix.

What would you change in Winx Club? Let me know in the comments!

Why You Should Watch BBC Class

Because I say so

Just kidding! I’ll give you actual reasons don’t worry.

Okay first of, what is Class about? Class is a Doctor Who spin-off, but you don’t have to be familiar with Doctor Who at all in order to watch it. The Doctor does appear in the first episode, but it’s not necessary to know him or his backstory. Short version: it’s about four teenagers and their teacher at Coal Hill Academy where they fight evil aliens. But obviously it’s about a lot more. It’s about these characters and their relationships with each other, dealing with the aftermath of everything they’ve been through.

So why should you watch it?

DIVERSE AND AMAZING CAST

LOOK AT THIS CAST. And spoiler: Charlie (top left) is gay. His boyfriend Mattheusz isn’t in this picture because while he’s important, he’s not a main character. But believe me he’s important and he’s not faced by aliens at all and just in love with Charlie, but that’s not his entire plotline!! He’s there to fight aliens with the others and call Charlie out on his shit because while Charlie is pure he’s also morally grey. Oh and he has relationships with the other characters as well, like I’m digging his friendship with Tanya and I’m crossing my fingers for a relationship with Miss Quill (woman on the right).

The characters are complex and don’t rely on stereotypes. See that girl on the left? She’s 14 and a genius. That girl next to her? Seems sweet right? She is, but she’ll also kick your ass. That boy next to her? Your typical jock, except not. He openly cries more then once and battles PTSD (the way his PTSD is written fbjsdhg). And there’s so much to Miss Quill that we don’t know about yet, but she’s hilarious, sarcastic and such a savage. And their acting is so good.

THE RELATIONSHIPS

The romantic relationships are healthy, built on communication and consent (can I get a hell yeah). Do they have their problems? Of course they do. Does that make the relationships boring? No. Take note other writers. Then their is the pure sibling-like relationship between Tanya and Ram. They can open up to each other, talk about everything, help each other, protect each other… It’s so pure guys. All the friendships on the show are great. Now I just need someone to give Miss Quill a hug.

IT’S INTENSE

So so so intense oh my God. You won’t get bored. The aliens are scary and intriguing and the way they affect the characters and further their arcs, relationships and the overal plot efbjsg.

THE HUMOUR

While it gets scary and intense (and bloody and kinda grose so if that’s really not your thing you might want to stay away) there are a lot of light moments and great jokes. Seriously I’ve laughed out loud so many times already.

IT’S BEAUTIFUL

The way the characters are written guys. They’re real and complex, and that within the space of only a few episodes (the fifth one came out today; don’t spoil me I haven’t watched yet). I’m just in awe how well-written these characters already are.

IT’S WRITTEN BY PATRICK NESS

So if you love his books, then I’m sure you’ll love this show.

IT’S JUST SO GOOD GUYS I CAN’T EVEN PUT IT INTO WORDS. JUST WATCH IT PLEASE

But seriously especially the first two episodes are pretty gross and bloody, so if that’s a trigger for you or just not your thing you might (sadly) have to stay away. Also warning: don’t get attached to anyone hahahaha *sobbing*

Are you watching Class?! IF NOT WHY NOT GO WATCH IT NOW AND SUPPORT IT SO WE CAN GET A SECOND SEASON PLEASE

Blogsterdam: The Answers To Your Questions

I feel like this is really late, but I actually planned to answer these in October so it’s not really late at all! I am annoyed that I just can’t make this a monthly feature, but oh well. Let’s finally answer these questions!

What’s the most unflattering image you think there is about Amsterdam?

Hmm I think you mean reputation wise? I guess that we’re all on drugs or something haha. Also let me introduce you to this wonderful video that was made in response to Fox News it’s hilarious:

Yeah it’s not a mess guys. It really isn’t.

Do you get have any bother by a person using a preference of Holland over the Netherlands?

Not really. I mean a lot of us say ‘Holland’ instead of ‘Nederland’ a lot of the time as well.

Do you cycle?

Okay this is not something I usually talk about because people in The Netherlands will give you a really weird look and usually laugh at you when you tell them but… I’m afraid to cycle. Yep. I don’t know how to ride a bike because it scares me. Especially the thought of riding one in a busy city like Amsterdam, no thank you. But seriously, it’s so normal to be able to ride a bike that people think it’s crazy when you can’t so I always feel uncomfortable when the topic is brought up and I know I might have to explain that I can’t ride a bike.

What is your favourite and least favourite part about Amsterdam?
I can’t really explain in words why I love Amsterdam and why I love living here. Partly it’s because it’s my home, but it’s also so historical and magical in a way. My least favourite part is probably how easily people will throw trash on the ground and dirty the city.
If I move to Amsterdam, will that encourage me to actually use my bike and cycle more?
Haha well that depends! A lot of people ride their bike instead of a car because parking is crazy in the center of the city (plus expensive) but if you don’t ride a car maybe not? But maybe it will motivate you to ride yours when you see so many others riding theirs haha.
Are there any underestimated cities/areas of The Netherlands that tend to get overshadowed by Amsterdam that you think are worth visiting?
Oh definitely! Utrecht (okay I’m a bit biased because that’s where my uni is) is also really gorgeous.
(not my picture)

Not my picture

Seriously I love the canals there. Also there’s a nice atmosphere and the people are really friendly. I haven’t explored it that much, but while Amsterdam is my home, I don’t feel like a stranger in Utrecht either.
Maastricht is also really pretty, but the one time I was there I wore my Converse platform sneakers and a lot of people looked at my shoes like I was wearing cats on my feet or something, so that ruined the experience.

Oh and Zaandam is also really fun to visit! It’s really close to Amsterdam so if you’re in Amsterdam you can just take the train and you’ll be there in like ten minutes or less (depending on where in the city you’re leaving from of course)

Not my picture

Not my picture

Just look how cute? It’s not like the entire village looks like this though!
Where am I most likely to find Douwe? 😉
I’M SORRY EM I DON’T KNOW. You will definitely find him at his own concert of course. Maybe you’ll be lucky like me and see him as a guest during a different concert (how cool would that be??? Live tweet me when that happens). He opened his own bar in Amsterdam but I can’t find the address (obviously I’ll let you know when I find it). He does live in Amsterdam so there’s a bigger chance that you’ll run into him than when you’re in the UK so…
Also to most of you who probably have no idea what’s going on, the question is about Douwe Bob a Dutch singer who represented us at Eurovision and the love of Em’s life just kidding ;P. Here’s Douwe’s performance at Eurovision:

If you could live anywhere in The Netherlands, would you want to stay in Amsterdam or live somewhere else?
I definitely want to stay in Amsterdam! If I’m going to move out of the city, I’m going to move out of the country. That sounds very dramatic; I’m just saying that there’s no other city in The Netherlands that I love as much as Amsterdam and that I feel at home at.
What’s your advice for making friends in Amsterdam? Any tips for making new Dutch friends?
Just be yourself! Don’t be afraid to speak your mind and joke around, as long as you’re not rude. Of course it depends on the person, but ‘Amsterdammers’ are always up for a chat and love wittiness and teasing each other in a fun way.
If I only had ONE day in Amsterdam, what place(s) would you advice for me to see?
Oh my gosh only one day! Well obviously you need to visit The American Book Center ;) Also you have to see the canals of course. I think the best way to spend the one day you have is to explore the center really. That way you can soak up the most of Amsterdam.
What kind of food should we absolutely try while in Amsterdam ?
STROOPWAFELS. OH MY GOD STROOPWAFELS. STROOPWAFELS ARE THE BEST. 10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND. Hot or cold, both is good (definitely try both though). Pepernoten are also good, especially covered in chocolate (ESPECIALLY covered in chocolate), but we don’t sell those all year long (we eat them around Sinterklaas, a holiday in December, but they start appearing in August or something already it’s crazy AND there’s a pepernoten store somewhere, though I don’t remember where). Marie this question is making me hungry omg.
Stroopwafels, a.k.a. the love of my life

Stroopwafels, a.k.a. the love of my life

Pepernoten

BUT SERIOUSLY GET THESE CHOCOLATE COVERED GOODIES INSTEAD

BUT SERIOUSLY GET THESE CHOCOLATE COVERED GOODIES INSTEAD

Favourite place outside of the city ? Could be in the suburbs, or in the Netherlands in general
Ooh I don’t know! This used to be Bakkum, but I haven’t been there in years. It’s a camping site not too far from Amsterdam and my grandparents went there every year, but when my grandmother got sick they sold the caravan and everything so I haven’t been there in over four years. If I went there now I probably wouldn’t love it as much as I did back then since it would make me sad (and I don’t know how much it has changed over the years!) but it was very peaceful and I loved being surrounded by nature. I went for long walks with my grandmother every day and I just sat outside and read.
Do you ever go around the city on bike, and would you recommend it?
Since I can’t ride one, I don’t. I don’t know if I’d recommend it either. I think riding one at one of the parks could be fun, but if you’re not used to riding a bike in a city like Amsterdam it might be a bit stressful!
Did you already go to see the TFIOS bench ? (sorry I HAD to ask that one haha)
Not specifically haha. I mean I might have seen it without realising it’s THE bench? I  thought I could handle The Fault In Our Stars even though cancer is a huge trigger for me, but when I read it I realised I really couldn’t (I haven’t seen the film either) so I haven’t gone out to look for the bench either.
Places to go outside of the obvious touristic ones? BOOKSHOPS? Shopping? GREAT FOOD?
Aaah let me think! I feel like tourists are maybe not that aware of our markets? (except for the Flower Market) But we do have those and they’re nice! Like the Noordermarkt, Waterlooplein Market and Albert Cuyp Market. If you love cats I’d definitely recommend the Cat Boat. There are so many more places I could recommend but I just can’t think of any!
For bookshops of course The American Book Center that I already talked about, but we also have a Waterstones (really close by the ABC!) and while it’s a Dutch bookshop Scheltema is really worth a visit! They also sell English books, but I just really like the store itself (one day I’ll hopefully do a Blogsterdam on it). It has four floors and it’s just really pretty. Oh and every Friday there’s a book market at the Spui, which is the square where the ABC is located!
Usually when I myself go shopping I tend to go Kalverstraat, Nieuwendijk and Dam Square, but really I’d recommend to just explore the center of the city because there are a lot of shops to discover there! Also the area around Waterlooplein has some interesting shops and we have our own Chinatown (make sure to visit YoYo if you love bubble tea! And if you don’t visit it anyway because it’s also a store and they sell some really cute stuff).

Omg look at my panda sneakers I haven’t worn those since FOREVER. I need to wear them again. But now it’s Autumn and rainy and I don’t want my pandas to get wet that sounds so weird. Also rip that bag it’s been broken for over a year and I need to get it fixed

Oh boy there’s so much great food where do I start. Okay so my favourite restaurant has to be A-Fusion, also located in Chinatown. It’s a bit expensive BUT SO WORTH IT. They also have great bubble tea and oh my God just everything is so good I’m practically drooling as I’m typing this. Really, if you love Asian food, eat here. If you want to try stroopwafels I recommend to just buy them at Albert Heijn (our biggest supermarket chain) from the Albert Heijn brand itself. Oh and Van der Linde in my opinion has the best ice cream, but that depends on your taste. It’s very creamy and made with the best whipped cream, but not everyone likes it of course (there’s always a really long line in the Summer but really, it’s worth it and it won’t take that long!) They also sell other desserts. I’d definitely recommend their chocolate truffels and mergpijpjes. Also there are a lot of stores that will try to lure you in with the delicious smell of Belgian waffles so good luck. Again Marie you’re making me so hungry with this question oh my God. I want all of the stuff I just mentioned.
Why do you think more films aren’t filmed in Amsterdam?
Hmm I don’t know! I’m guessing you mean international films? Since Dutch tv shows and movies are filmed here. I think Amsterdam would make a great setting for movies, though I hope they wouldn’t go with the ‘Amsterdam is so dangerous it’s full of drugs!!’ narrative.
What do you think the most romantic part of the city is?
Hmm I think the canals at night, when it’s bathed in all the lights.
Ever met anyone famous?

When I was little my mom and I ran into this Dutch girl group at the McDonalds and I got their autograph #score

How would you describe each season, in terms of weather and how people respond (by actions/attitude/clothing choices) to the weather?

Spring: lots of rain and if it doesn’t rain people will complain about their hay fever (like me aaay). At the sign of the smallest ray of sunshine people will take out their T-Shirts and shorts and wear them like it’s Summer already even though I’m still wearing jumpers and I don’t know how many layers because it’s not Summer

Summer: people tend to complain that ‘we haven’t had a good Summer in years!!’ but honestly do we ever get a good Summer?? I don’t remember ever experiencing a ‘good Summer’. It still rains a lot. If we do get warm weather, the day will usually end in rain and thunder and misery. And usually when it gets warm it’s suffocatingly hot and just not pleasant. Also more hay fever yay.

Autumn: Most Rain™ along with Winter, crazy twelve year olds who think it’s cool to not wear a coat when it’s almost freezing and to get pneumonia, more Rain™, you won’t know what to wear like it’s too hot for Winter clothes so it’s a very confusing time

Winter: sometimes we get snow (we used to get a lot more snow and it used to freeze a lot (actual freezing, when I say ‘freezing’ I’m usually exaggerating) but then climate change happened) but it’s usually not a lot and it melts quickly. Usually we’re just stuck with gross muddy snow (I’m speaking for Amsterdam, it’s different in other parts of the country).
I hope I made you guys a bit wiser about Amsterdam. If I made you hungry, I’m sorry. I really am, because I made myself hungry and I have none of the foods I’m craving right now at home (seriously tempted to message my mom and ask her if she can bring stroopwafels…) What are some fun facts about your country? Let me know in the comments!

Orlando Day 5 Downtown Disney

Previous posts: Day 1 | Day 2 Part I | Day 2 Part II | Day 3 | Day 4 Part I | Day 4 Part II | Day 4 Part III

I’m finally writing the last one! (this is only a few minutes after I wrote the previous one but it’s still long overdue) This wasn’t our last day, but it is the last post I had planned to write. There’s not much else to write about, except for relaxing, swimming and lots of shopping and I don’t find that very interesting haha.

So without further ado, let’s start!

I have to admit when we first got there we weren’t that impressed and honestly I was super disappointed haha. It didn’t seem very Disney at all.

Then we found this candy store which gave me hope again haha

Though I really didn’t want to buy any candy from the Evil Queen haha. It was especially suspicious that they sold candied apples (LOOK AT THOSE BAYMAX ONES THOUGH)

We found another store selling Marvel stuff but then it looked like the Disney stuff was over and I was worried that I had overhyped it haha

I got really hungry (like always) and really didn’t want to wait for my food any longer haha. I don’t remember what I had, but I think it was good? Also look artsy picture of my Mickey and Minnie bag and Stitch dress. After we had passed through that area things were really looking brighter and I can assure you that Downtown Disney is really worth it

This area focused a lot more on Disney and they played different songs, making me feel right at home.

THIS STORE THOUGH (the one on the right, the other two pictures are from somewhere else). IT’S THE BEST. HERE ARE PICTURES FROM THE INSIDE:

LOOK AT IT. SO BEAUTIFUL. AND ALL THE STUFF THEY SOLD. They sold stuff I had seen at the parks  (like a Beauty and the Beast pillow that I had regretted buying so I got it there), as well as stuff they didn’t sell at the parks. It was glorious

Really loved this display, especially the pun haha

This is from a different store, where they sold a lot of clothes, but what I loved about it was all the art on the walls. There was more, but I chose my favourites to show

There was also a Christmas shop at Downtown, where I found some ornaments they didn’t have at Magic Kingdom, which I’m really happy with! If you’re curious about the ornaments, you can see them here

There is so much cute stuff outside the stores though, like that Winnie the Pooh statue and all the lego statues outside the Lego store. There’s another candy store, but this one is run by Goofy who I trust more than the Evil Queen. I didn’t buy anything, but it all looked so cute.

Last but not least I’ll talk about Once Upon a Toy! Like the name suggests this is a toy store, thus most of the stuff didn’t really interest me. I did think it was cool that you could build your own Mr. Potato Head (see the fifth collage, bottom left side). What I really came for though, where the Tsum Tsums. And I wasn’t disappointed. I didn’t just buy the medium Minnie Mouse pictured, but a few others as well. I bought even more at the Disney Character Outlet at the Premium Outlet a few days later. They had a lot when I was there and cheaper than at Downtown Disney, so really recommend going there! (though that was a year ago so I don’t know how things are now)

I can’t believe I just finished the last post! It’s like the trip is now truly over haha. If you go to Orlando, I really recommend going here as well. We took a cab here, which cost a bit of money, but you can make it as cheap or expensive as you want while you’re there (also pro tip: if there’s a shuttle driving between your hotel and the parks, take a cab to the park where the shuttle picks people up. Saves a lot of money!) It’s a lot of fun, very Disney and magical (I almost went Doge there)

Have you been to Downtown Disney? Who is your favourite Disney villain? Let me know in the comments!

Orlando Day 4 Magic Kingdom III

Previous posts: Day 1 | Day 2 Part I | Day 2 Part II | Day 3 | Day 4 Part I | Day 4 Part II

It’s almost been an entire year since my last post in this series, but I’m determined to see it through even though my memory will be fuzzy.

Okay so I read through my last post and it ended at the Monster Inc. Laugh Floor, so let’s take a look at my pictures to see what we did after that because I don’t remember (this is why you don’t procrastinate kids)

Fun fact: as a kid I used to quote them all the time (‘oooooh’)

Deducting from the pictures and what’s left of my memory, we were quite hungry after that and decided to look for a place to eat. Before we could leave Tomorrowland though, we stumbled upon the Incredibles Super Dance Party, so naturally we stayed for that.

That’s my mom’s bow around Frozone’s neck haha. They also danced together #otp #notreallyFrozonealreadyhasagreatwifewhoisthegreatestgoodheisevergonnaget

pinocchiocollage

We ended up eating at Pinocchio Village Haus, which I personally found really cute and homely. I was wearing my ‘It’s my birthday button’ and thus got a free chocolate dessert which was delicious (of course this I remember what did you expect)

After dinner we made our way through Fantasyland again, as it was getting cooler and a little more bearable to stand in the long, long line for The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Though not without stopping to take some pictures and do some shopping of course

So what do you do while waiting in a super long line in the heat besides complain (kidding, I didn’t complain that much)? Take an artsy picture of the Winnie the Pooh ride of course. Thankfully just like the Pooh ride this line also had interactive games, though I didn’t take any pictures of them woops.

Anyway, the ride was definitely worth waiting for! It’s fun and super cute with the dwarfs and Snow White. I won’t give too much away of course, because spoilers (plus I don’t remember much but ssh)

We walked around a bit after the ride and did some more shopping, but it was soon time for the Main Street Electrical Parade which was so pretty.

Of course it ended with a very American wagon haha. But seriously, the pictures turned out pretty good, but it was so beautiful in real life. The pictures don’t do the magic justice haha.

After that it was time for the fireworks show

IT WAS SO PRETTY AND MAGICAL WITH THE DISNEY SONGS AND QUOTES 100% RECOMMENDED. After that we quickly had to pick up our shopping bags from the pick up point so that we could catch the last shuttle back to the hotel. Obviously I didn’t want to leave, but if we had to grab a taxi back that would’ve cost a lot of money. Besides we were still going to Downtown Disney! And that’s what the last post will cover.

Oh boy, really hope that the last post won’t take me another year to write and post haha

Guys talk Disney to me (someone should make a parody like this on ‘Talk Dirty To Me’ haha). What’s your favourite film? Favourite character? Song? Let me know in the comments!

One of My Favourite Cities: Rome

A while back Marie suggested I’d do a post about my trip to Rome now almost three years ago, and since my contemporary WIP/Cam NaNo project partly takes place in Rome, I really felt like doing this post now.

So about three years ago we went to Rome with school and I fell in love. This love has never gone away of course, but it burned up again while I was writing the part in Rome (it’s nowhere near perfect yet. I mostly focused on the scenes that had to happen there instead of the descriptions – and I really want to do the beauty of this city a lot more justice). Now I really want to go back (which I already did) and I just relived one of my favourite trips ever taken.

WHY DO I LOVE ROME SO MUCH?

Before we went I was already excited, but when I came back? Oh I wanted to go back immediately. Don’t get me wrong, I love Amsterdam and it’s not like I’d consider moving to Rome (for starters I’d have to learn Italian. And if I were to ever leave Amsterdam it’d be for London), but I just loved being there. One of the reasons why I love Rome is also one of the reasons I love Amsterdam: it’s historical. You can walk around and easily imagine how it was centuries ago (Amsterdam not as far back as Rome. When I’m in the centre of the city I mostly imagine the 17th century), it’s historical and magical. Are all the people friendly? Um no. Mostly the security guards are quite aggressive. They’ll start yelling at you in Italian quickly, but it’s not like everyone in such a big city (or in a small one) can be friendly, so who cares? It definitely didn’t ruin my experience. Part of why I love Rome so much is because I love history, art and architecture, which Rome is full of. There’s also the fact that I love food (which I’m sure most of you already know haha), especially Italian. But why it’s one of my favourite cities in the world is mostly because of the feeling the city gives me just thinking about it. I just love it.

MY TRIP

I won’t tell you all the details, because it was a week long trip and so much happened, so I decided to just show some pictures (which is going to be hard because there are a lot of pictures) and tell you some of my favourite stories.

   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Let’s start at the Colosseum because that’s pretty much where we started our trip. Most people probably think of the Colosseum when they think of Rome. I loved walking there, imagining how it must have looked like roughly 2000 years ago.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Photoception haha

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

And of course it’s just beautiful, especially the way the sun shines through the archways ❤️

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Oh and the view from both sides is gorgeous of course. I mean just look at it.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I was and still am in love with these trees. This picture is taken around the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. I think they were also at Villa Borghese and possible other places in the city as well, but don’t quote me on this haha. Speaking of the Roman Forum – definitely worth it as well. The entire city is worth it though haha

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

These pictures are unlike the others but I still want to share them because of the stories behind them. The Marilyn Monroe mirror was in the room of some friends, one of those friends was really drunk at some point and started talking to Marilyn. At first we thought he was joking around, but turned out he was quite serious haha. He couldn’t remember it the next day either. When I left for Rome I definitely didn’t think I’d come back with an Oshawott plush, but I did! And you know where I found it? At The Vatican. They had a game store there and as we passed I noticed several Pokemon plushes in their display. I wasn’t sure if it fit in my suitcase, but I REALLY wanted it, so one of my friends, who had brought a really large bag because she didn’t have anything smaller, said she’d put it in hers haha. In the end it really didn’t fit in my suitcase lol

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

#awkwardpicturewithmathteacher lol. He would have been in the picture anyway, so my friend who was taking the picture told him to stand closer and pose. Look at my awkward face.
Anyway, the first picture was taken inside a quadricycle, which we hired twice and was so much fun. Definitely recommend it, especially at Villa Borghese. Not just is it fun, but it’s great way to go around and take in your surroundings. Sometimes at least one of you needs to to be 18 and have a driver’s license though (I say sometimes because the first time the guy was like ‘none of you are 18 and have a license? Ok here you go’ but the second time the other guy asked. Thankfully we had someone who was 18 and had a license in our group that time haha)

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I’m honestly shocked about the small amount of pictures I’ve taken at Villa Borghese, but one of my favourite places in the park (besides Galleria Borghese) is the Pincian Hill. The view is amazing, especially at sunset. I mean, look at the St. Peter’s Basilica bathed in the sunlight. It’s gorgeous.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Speaking of the Basilica, be prepared for a really long queue. I don’t remember how long we had to wait outside, but it was long. And cold (we were there in November). It wasn’t without any memorable events though: old classmates that I barely ever talked to fought over my candy with one of my friends and some people in line behind us tried to cut the line – they actually pushed us and at some point a line was formed to make sure they wouldn’t be able to. It was crazy

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES   SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I have to admit that the Tiber didn’t make a huge impression on me. In fact, I had kind of forgotten about it. Obviously I know it’s there and that it exists, but it just didn’t make the same impression on me as a lot of other stuff I’ve seen in Rome. Though looking at the picture I took three years ago I am reminded of its beauty. And of course we went to the Trevi fountain. It’s one of those spots you can’t not go to when in Rome. When I was a kid we went to Rome as well (for a day, we went to multiple cities in Rome) and I had thrown a coin into the Trevi fountain. And lo and behold, I came back! So it’s true guys. I read somewhere that if you throw one in the second time, you’ll come back married? So we’ll see since I threw in another one (not that I want to come back married, but when in Rome you know) haha

I have a lot more photos, which made it hard to choose. I’d love to share more, but that would make this post incredibly long and some things are just so much better when you see them for yourself! Like I do have pictures of the Pantheon for example, but they just don’t do it justice. There were also places where you weren’t allowed to take pictures (double check if you’re allowed to; the guards have no chill). I would’ve loved to take pictures at the Sixtine Chapel (which was definitely one of my favourite sights – I loved it so much), but alas. That wasn’t allowed

SOME TIPS

  • If you’re going in November, the weather will be rather strange. It can be warm enough to walk around without a coat, but it can also be freezing and you’ll be glad you brought a scarf and gloves
  • Bring sunglasses! Whether it’s warm or not there’s a high chance the sun will be shining and if you’re like me and can’t stand sunlight (that makes me sound like a vampire woops. I mean I get a headache if the sun is shining really brightly and I’m not wearing my sunglasses
  • Like I said, make sure whether or not you’re allowed to take pictures. You don’t want an angry security guard yelling at you in Italian
  • Speaking of which, don’t stand at the rocks at the Colosseum or you’ll get yelled at too
  • Always get ice cream (unless you don’t like ice cream and you’re lactose intolerant. In that case don’t get ice cream)
  • Eat as much food as you can
  • It might be useful to order tickets for certain sights and museums beforehand
  • LOOK AFTER YOUR STUFF. This is important in every big city, especially when you’re on holiday because you really don’t want to lose your passport, but seriously. Look after your stuff. I remember a classmate telling us that she noticed an old lady zipping her friend’s backpack open. Thankfully she noticed. Also if you have a backpack, keep that in front of you when you’re in busy spots and on the bus/metro
  • If you see a microwave at the restaurant: get out. Get out now. We noticed the microwave after we had already gotten our food, and it was disgusting. My friend’s pizza looked like it moved. Also I got a really small portion of lasagna and I paid like seven euros for it #3yearslaterandstillpissed
  • But don’t worry about the food, because that was my only bad experience. I ate a lot of good food and most of it was reasonably priced (I ate at a restaurant near the Colosseum for ten euros: a pizza, bread and a soda all included in the prize. I really wish I knew the name of the restaurant or where exactly it is, but all I remember is that we had a view of the Colosseum)
  • Get a map. Our teachers had several that they handed out to groups that wanted them and I’m so glad we had one. It really helped finding our way through the city and finding our way back to the hotel in the dark. Honestly I think you should always have a map when you’re in a foreign place, but maybe that’s just the planner inside me haha

I could probably write an entire book about Rome, but I’ll leave it at this. Have you ever been to Rome? Do you love it as much as I do? What is your favourite city you’ve ever been to? Let me know in the comments!
