Review: Avalon Web of Magic #1-3 by Rachel Roberts

Avalon

Genre: Middle grade | Fantasy
Series: Avalon: Web of Magic #1-3
Goodreads rating: 4.07 | 4.04 | 4.28
My rating: ★★★

summary

I’ll only put the summary of the first book here, to avoid spoilers.

Three very different girls are all drawn to a secret place deep in the woods. There they discover a portal to another world through which strange and wondrous animals have emerged, searching desperately for the magic that will keep them alive. The animals are peaceful and good, but what follows them through the portal is pure evil. Emily, Adriane, and Kara have been chosen by magical beings called Fairimentals to protect the magical animals, though they don’t know why. To save them and their world, the three girls must begin a quest to find the lost home of legendary magic, Avalon…or to perish trying.

review

I bought the omnibus edition of the first three books in the Avalon: Web of Magic, so I’ll be reviewing the three books together.

I think I would’ve enjoyed these books a lot better when I was younger and that I would’ve definitely continued the series. The worldbuilding is fun and the animals are adorable, but the plot itself is kind of flat. The books are already quite short, but barely anything happens in the first two books. I guess I wouldn’t have had this problem if I actually liked the characters. Emily and Ariadne are okay (though I don’t care about them), but Kara is just plain annoying. She is your typical mean girl and in the first three books there doesn’t seem to be much else to her. I don’t think she really grew that much, but then again none of the characters did. Of course there are more books (I think there are about twelve books in total), but in my opinion there should already be more character development at this point. I also think that a reader (me, hi! *waves*) shouldn’t care more about a minor character that doesn’t even talk because he’s a purple bear-like thing (or at least he’s described as bear-like) than about the main characters.

The writing style was okay, but it really annoyed me that there were random exclamation points! They really didn’t make any sense! And they just sounded weird! But apart from that there was nothing wrong with it. Nothing special, but nothing mind-blowing either.

The drawings really added to the story and made it feel more magical. I liked the element of friendship and how it’s all about saving the animals. Also almost all of the magical creatures were made up by the author which was really original.

The second (All That Glitters) is my least favourite. It’s from Kara’s POV (and we’ve already established how I feel about her). I constantly rolled my eyes at her thoughts (I really thought she would’ve changed at least a little bit since the first book) and especially in this one I felt like nothing was happening. In the third one there’s a lot more action, but just not enough to make me want to continue this series.

All in all I would’ve enjoyed this when I was younger (magic, magical animals, different worlds, pretty drawings!). Have you read this? Do you agree with me? Let me know in the comments!

The Monthly Hufflepuff | September

I can’t believe it’s October already. I know I have this reaction pretty much every month, but now we’re actually getting close to 2016. TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN GUYS

BUT IT’S THE MONTH OF HALLOWEEN SO THAT’S FUN. Even though we don’t really celebrate Halloween in The Netherlands sadly :( But I’m still excited (look look, I’m now called Spookchelle on Twitter! It sounds like a cute ghost Pokémon).

So what happened in the month of September?

whatiread

This was a pretty good reading month, mostly I think because of the Falling for Autumn Read-a-Thon haha. Also I read more than this picture lets on. I sadly don’t own all the Tsubasa volumes yet, so I read most of them online (soon I will own them all though) nor do I own xxxHolic (and unless the next volumes are better I probably won’t buy them at all).

  • Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas – no rating yet
  • Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles by CLAMP volumes 1-28 (reread) ★★★★★
  • Circles in the Stream by Rachel Roberts ★★★
  • All That Glitters by Rachel Roberts ★★
  • xxxHolic by CLAMP volumes 1-3 ★★★
  • Cry of the Wolf by Rachel Roberts ★★★

I’ll hopefully write my review of QoS later today. I just need to write down all my thoughts before I can decide on a rating. I’m also planning a combined review for Circles in the Stream, All That Glitters and Cry of the Wolf as I read them together in an omnibus and a post on why you should read Tsubasa.

2015goals

I FINISHED MY GOODREADS CHALLENGE!!! So naturally I changed it to 100 books. I actually wanted to set it to 100 this year, but because I was in my senior year, had my exams and started at a new school, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it. As of right now I’m 19 books away of completing this new goal *GASP*

what I posted-2

September wasn’t that good when it came to blogging. It wasn’t bad (like last May when I had my exams), but I just wanted to blog more. Sadly I was sick for three weeks (I’M FEELING SO MUCH BETTER GUYS. I STILL HAVE A COUGH BUT I HAVE MY ENERGY BACK) and I started a new school. Since I give a list of all the posts I posted during my weekly wrap ups, I’ll give you a list of my favourites posts this month:

nextmonth

MAGNUS CHASE IS COMING OUT. SO IS CARRY ON. AND THE ILLUSTRATED EDITION  OF PHILOSOPHER’S STONE. ALSO HAPPY HOME DESIGNER CAME OUT YESTERDAY. I NEED MORE MONEY.

Okay let’s be more calm about this haha. This month I’ll have my first exams at my new school and we need to finish our magazine, so it’s probably (read: definitely) going to be busy. Now that I’m feeling better though I hope it won’t get in the way of my blogging (and writing. Oh my wizardgod I haven’t written since school started). Also! The Book Club of the Opinionated Hufflepuffs will be reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. I’m very excited about that, since I’ve wanted to read it for quite some time now.

And that was September! How was your month? I siriusly need to catch up on all of your blogposts. I feel so bad for not reading all of them, but soon guys. Soon!

The Weekly Hufflepuff #8

Time for another weekly wrap up! Remember when I said I was slowly recovering in my last wrap up? Yeah, I’m still sick! But like I said in one of my read-a-thon posts (can’t remember which one) don’t worry!

whatiread

If you’ve been following my read-a-thon posts you know I’ve been reading quite a bit!

  • Circles in the Stream by Rachel Roberts
  • All That Glitters by Rachel Roberts
  • I’ve started Cry of the Wolf by Rachel Roberts. I’ll review the first three books in the series as I have them as an omnibus
  • I reread volume 10 to 28 of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle
  • I read the first two volumes of xxxHolic

personal

I saw the first episode of the new Muppets show. While I enjoyed it, it didn’t feel like The Muppets! I kind of miss the old format, but I will keep on watching. (My favourite line: ‘No, not THAT kind of meeting’)

Wednesday was pretty much dedicated to schoolwork (except for a short break to watch The Muppets)

I stayed home from school on Tuesday and Friday. On Tuesday I watched Easy A and on Friday Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. And now I want to reread the book again. It’s a never-ending circle guys

Yesterday Avid Reader, Elly and I started talking about how cool it would be if we bloggers/booklovers/awesome people all lived in the same apartment building and that grew into a village in which the three of us, Gabi and Jillian are the mayors. It will have a gigantic bookshop and library, lots of tea and chocolate, dragons, a machine that can make fictional characters real and a clone machine so we don’t have to share, Pokémon, Hogwarts and so much more that I’ve already forgotten haha. Oh and it will be called Tea Town and this will be our anthem: T is for Tadahhh I’m here! E is for excellent and A is for awesome sauce! If you want to be a villager, let us know haha.

what I posted-2

elsewhere

Like I said last week, until I’m completely caught up this section will feature blog posts I read this week, not necessarily ones that were posted this week.

I can’t believe September is almost over already and I’ll be writing my September wrap up soon! Can’t believe how fast time flies. I haven’t done many writing posts this month, nor have I done a Discussing Hufflepuff or a Blogsterdam. I probably won’t do those anymore this month, but hopefully everything will be back to normal next month so I can regularly blog again!

Falling for Autumn Day 5

Falling For Atumn 2.0 Read-a-Thon

Hey guys! I wish I could’ve updated more during this read-a-thon, but on Wednesday I was busy all day with schoolwork and was too exhausted to blog afterwards and I stayed home from school yesterday and today, since I’m not feeling too well. I might go to the doctor on Monday if things continue like this. DON’T WORRY THOUGH. I’m fine. It’s more that I’m getting sick of being sick haha.

ANYHOW. How is the read-a-thon going so far since I last updated on Tuesday?

  • As I predicted I finished Circles in the Stream by Rachel Roberts
  • I finished All That Glitters by Rachel Roberts
  • I started Cry of the Wolf by Rachel Roberts (it’s an omnibus featuring these three books haha)
  • I finished rereading the entire Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle manga (I’m planning on writing a post about it now that it’s fresh in my mind again, so I can properly tell you guys why you MUST read it haha), which means I’ve read volume 11 to 28 so 18 volumes
  • I’ve read the first two volumes of xxxHolic. I’ve never really been interested in it, but I feel like I need to have read xxxHolic in order to understand Tsubasa World Chronicle

The official challenges of this read-a-thon:

  • Read a total of three (3) books – I’ve read 22 books haha, yay for manga!
  • To read at least 150 pages per day – So far so good!
  • To read a book with the colour orange and/or brown on the coverI had actually picked The Silkworm for this challenge, but I can actually pick almost all of the Tsubasa volumes I read since Shaoran has brown hair and is on almost all of the covers. There’s also brown on the cover of Circles in the Stream.
  • To read a book out of your comfort zone (a book from a genre you don’t normally read) – Not yet! Rachel Roberts’ books are fantasy, which is my comfort zone. It’s also middle grade and while I usually read young adult, it’s not exactly outside of my comfort zone either.
  • To read a book with a word in the title that’s associated with autumn (autumn itself, leaf, acorn, chestnut, spider, cobweb, Halloween, etc…) Not yet.
  • To read a book that scares you (whether it’s a horror book, a book that intimidates you, you can pick up whatever reason for a book you scare you) – I’m still not planning on reading a book for this challenge. I don’t read horror (nor do I even have a horror book on my shelf) and a book that intimidates me would be Les Mis, and I won’t be able to finish that during this read-a-thon haha

CHALLENGE

Day 5’s challenge is the 394 Page Sentence! For this challenge I have to turn to page 394 of my current read (or one I plan to read) and read the first full sentence. Then I have to write a continuation of 55/75 words. Since my current read doesn’t have a page 394 I could also turn to page 31, but since I’m upstairs and my book is downstairs (so lazy, I know) I’ll be picking a book I’m planning to read, if not during this read-a-thon then next week: The Silkworm (I do hope my copy has over 394 pages…) It does! Phew, that could’ve been awkward haha. The original sentence will be in green, my continuation will be in blue.

After a brief pause Fancourt said:

”I am actually a rabbit from a faraway land.”

Strike and Robin looked at each other.

”I knew it.” Strike whispered.

”So it’s true then. You’re the one who kidnapped Alice.” Robin looked at the man in disgust.

Fancourt threw back his head and laughed.

”Kidnapped? That stupid child followed me on her own. Why would I kidnap that brat? She keeps on nagging and nagging: ‘White Rabbit, why are Tweedledee and Tweedledum called that way? White Rabbit, why is the Red Queen red? White Rabbit, White Rabbit…!”

Ah a little bit more than 75! Woops. Also don’t ask where the hell this came from guys. I have no idea haha. Sooo whoever Fancourt is, I’m sure he’s not actually the White Rabbit in disguise, and I doubt The Silkworm will turn out to be a fantasy novel. Don’t take this too serious haha.

How’s your read-a-thon going? If you’re not participating, what are you currently reading? If you are participating, have you done the 394 Page Challenge? Let me know, I want to check out yours!

Falling For Autumn Day 1+2

Falling For Atumn 2.0 Read-a-Thon

I was stuck at school until 7 PM yesterday and by the time I got home I was so exhausted I couldn’t blog anymore! I barely even read. Thus progress of day 1 and 2 in one post.

My progress so far:

  • I’ve read 113 pages of Circles in the Stream by Rachel Roberts (around 30 pages yesterday and the rest today). The day isn’t over yet though, so I will continue this book (and most likely finish) once I’m done with this post
  • I read about half of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle volume 9 on the train home and finished it
  • I finished volume 10 today (I’m still shocked at how little I remember haha)

I don’t really notice how many pages I read while reading manga, but I do think I’ve read 150 pages today (reading 150 pages every day is one of the challenges)!

CHALLENGE

Ner’s description:

In this Book Bingo all you have to do is share the books that you’ve read or will read that match the bingo below. You can repeat books that match more than one category. It’s all entirely up to you how to do it.

My Bookish Bingo:

  • A book that’s in the middle of a series – Lola and the Boy Next Door
  • A book set in another country but yours – Fangirl (since I live in The Netherlands, I can name a lot of books here haha)
  • A book that came/will come out in your birthday month – More Happy Than Not came out last June (I haven’t read it yet)
  • A book that became/will become a movie/tv-series – City of Bones
  • A book with more than 500 pages – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • A book that scares you – Winter. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN
  • A book with numbers/a number in the title – I Am Number Four
  • A book written by a male author – Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
  • A book from a foreign author – The School for Good and Evil (again, a lot of authors I read are foreign to me since I live in the Netherlands)

I will now continue reading! If you’re participating in the read-a-thon, how are you doing? If you’re not, what are you reading right now? Let me know in the comments!
