Five Webtoons To Read This Valentine’s Day

While I didn’t set any official goals for myself this year since I didn’t want to pressure myself, especially with my burn-out, I did decide that this year I want to blog more about Webtoons, because I really want to share them with you since they’re amazing and have become such a big part of my life these past few years. I have at least one Webtoon to read each day of the week, which on my not so great days have been such a help. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I figured: why not talk about some more romance heavy Webtoons? Some of these are more romance focused than others, but there is a romance that’s central to the plot.

IMPORTANT: Please read Webtoons on either the website or the app. This is entirely free for you, but supports the artists as Webtoon pays them per view etc.

Always Human

Set in a future with very advanced technology, Always Human follows Sunati and Austen as they fall in love. Always Human covers important topics like beauty standards and academic pressure, but mostly it’s about Sunati and Austen’s relationship, which is beautifully written. I loved seeing how both of them grew, both outside and inside the relationship, and how they slowly became more and more comfortable with each other.

ALSO! Always Human is completed, so you can binge it!

#Blessed

Disaster Biโ„ข swipes right on a bunch of Gods and Goddesses and now finds herself bound to a contract and a prophecy. Which God or Goddess will win her heart?

When #Blessed was first added to Webtoon it sounded like a fun read, but I had NO IDEA Joanna was bi so imagine how much my heart fluttered when there were flasbacks to her previous disastrous dates and!! She had dates with girls too!! Joanna is the ultimate Disaster Biโ„ข and I love her so much. At first she’s not happyย at all to have all these Gods and Goddesses show up and make a mess of her life, but she soon comes to love all of them and honestly I really hope there’ll be a polyamorous ending because I love all of them?

My Giant Nerd Boyfriend

My Giant Nerd Boyfriend is a slice of life comic, following tiny Fishball and – as the title suggests – her Giant Nerd Boyfriend. I’m not that big on slice of life comics* but gosh My Giant Nerd Boyfriend is just so cute and funny and absolute relationship goals?? Fishball also shows the downs of the relationship, but they always work through their problems.

* I say while I read three

Read My Giant Nerd Boyfriend on Webtoon

Super Secret

Super Secret more likeย super cute. Super Secret follows Emma and Ryan, neighbours and best friends since they were little, although Emma has no idea that Ryan and his family are actually supernatural beings. While I called it ‘super cute’, that’s mostly in the beginning. There’s more angst later on in the comic but it’s still funny and adorable. Emma is so clueless whereas Ryan is the Mom Friendโ„ข we all need. There are also many loveable and unique side characters.

Big Jo

Big Jo is still on hiatus as I’m typing it and I really hope it will come back soon as it was supposed to come back in January please I miss my kids

God I love Big Joย so much. Jo is such an icon, not caring what people think of her. She does have some problems with how she sees her body at the start of the comic, but she has this beautiful realisation that she is beautiful and becomes 1000000x more confident and it’s awesome. I also love how the comic showed that fat =/= unhealthy. Honestly Big Jo is the body positivity comic we deserve. Big Jo will leave you with warm feelings and laughing out loud.

Also: more Bi Disastersโ„ข!! Jo herself is one (a possible female love interest popped up at the end of season 1 and?? I’m screaming?? THEY’RE GOING ON A DATE??) and so is the male lead, though he’s more of a Disasterโ„ข than Jo is ksdgjgh legit he pretty much kisses EVERYONE* in a panic like??

Also there’s a butch janitor who’s dating a femme teacher who are legit goals and an English teacher who is 100% based on Tom Hiddleston which is super funny and he’s engaged to the cutest cinnamon and so many more amazing characters

* Just to clarify this is an exaggeration you’ll see what I mean when you read the scene

I have some more Webtoons to recommend, so hopefully I’ll do a part two soon? If I don’t get to it before Valentine’s Day I’ll just do it after

Do you read any Webtoons? Maybe one of these? Which ones are your favourites? If you don’t read any Webtoons: do you have a favourite comic or graphic novel? Let me know in the comments!

LGBTQIAP+ Comics You Should Read Part II

I’m back with more comic recommendations! With this being the last week of Pride it doesn’t mean that I won’t ever do a part III of course, I’ll definitely share more at some point in the future! Anyway, let’s dive in

Giant Days

I discovered Giant Days when I caught up on all the Lumberjanes issues that were out back then and was looking for a replacement. According to some forum (I think?) Giant Days was similar to Lumberjanes and as it sounded interesting I went to check it out. And lo and behold, I wasย hooked. Giant Days is very much its own story of course, but it is a little bit like a more mature Lumberjanes.Giant Days is about three best friends trying to get through college together and while it’s pretty realistic, it also has some more fantasy-like elements, thus why I see the similarities with Lumberjanes. While dealing with some serious topics, it’s fun, silly and absolutely hilarious. I don’t laugh out loud quickly when reading comics, but Giant Days? I’ve laughed out loud multiple times. Daisy is biracial (her grandmother is black)ย and throughout the comics she realises she likes girls (I don’t remember her labeling herself?) and eventually she gets into a relationship with a girl. It’s… not the best relationship, but the comic never pretends it is. It’s just a very realistic take on a bad relationship. If you like Lumberjanes, I definitely recommend Giant Days.

The Backstagers

*chants* Queer theater boys queer theater boys queer theater boys! Another one that really reminds me of Lumberjanes, although this is about the backstage crew of a school theater club. Like the Lumberjanes’ camp, backstage isn’t a regular one as it’s a magical place with lots of secrets to uncover. I love how The Backstagers not only showcases great friendships between boys, but also breaks down stereotypes and toxic masculinity. Plus a cute slow burn between two of the boys and Beckett (on the left) is trans. There are only two volumes so it’s a very short read (though a Valentine’s Day special came out so maybe there’s more coming?) but so so worth it. Again, if you love Lumberjanes, definitely recommend this one.

Patsy Walker

I’ve only read the first volume of this but I’m already in love?? It’s just very queer without making a big deal about it and I love it. Also the story itself is just fun and cute? Patsy Walker a.k.a. Hellcat starts a temp agency for people with superpowers which in itself is already a unique and fun concept, but the entire vibe of the comic is just?? So fun?? The art work is cute and colourful and while there are villains to fight there isn’t really any angst. Also the humour really reminds me of Squirrel Girl, which is a plus. There are multiple queer characters (my fave being Ian Soo, who’s bisexual) who just get to exist, be happy, have fun adventures and friends* and ahhh I’m so sad this got cancelled even though I haven’t finished it yet.

* I don’t know about any romantic relationships as I’m not that far yet but I think they do also get into healthy relationships?

Zodiac Starforce

I’ve actually talked about this one before!ย ย Zodiac Starforce is a magical girls comic, in which the girls powers are based on the zodiac signs. Apart from multiple POC the main cast also consists of two queer girls who fall in love with each other. Apart from that once again a great friendship is at the center of this one. These girls are not just fighting to save the world, but also to protect each other. It’s a fun read, though it also explores the darker side of being a magical girl.

Hi-Fi Fight Club

Okay so there aren’t that many issues out for this one yet so I can’t really say that much about plot and characters, but the main character has a crush on a really pretty girl and it’s super relatable because SAME. She’s such a mess around her ajbshg The main character works at a record store, but it turns out that her co-workers are sort of superheroes, minus the super powers and have started a fight club. Oh and it takes place in the 90s! So far it’s really fun and cute and I can’t wait to see where this goes

That’s it for now, but as I said Pride being almost over doesn’t mean the end for this series.

Have you read any of these? Any LGBTQIAP+ comics you’d recommend? Let me know in the comments!

LGBTQIAP+ Comics You Should Read Part I

HAPPY PRIDE

Am I going to start all my Pride posts like this? Probably. ANYWAY. You may know I love comics. One of the reasons I love comics so much is because they’re so diverse?? Including LGBTQIAP+ rep?? Obviously it hasn’t always been that way so I can’t be all mad and go ‘why did no one tell me before I got into them in 2016!!’* I’ve been meaning to scream about my favourite comics, so what better time than Pride?

* Obviously not counting the Donald Duck and other Disney comics I used to read as a child. Oh and the Winx Club comics! Anyone remember those? I did read manga before that but it’s really hard to find good LGBTQIAP+ manga that are not full of gross stereotypes and fetishing adgjhs

Shoot Around

My absolute favourite!! Okay I love all the comics on this list dearly, but oh my goodness this one. It has a special place in my heart because it was the first LGBTQIAP+ comic I read but it’s also just SO GOOD. It’s about an all girls high school basketball team and their coach who suddenly find themselves in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. While it gets tense and there’s quite some angst – because you know,, zombies – the focus lies on these characters just trying to keep on living their life, not just surviving. Out of the eight main characters only one of them is white and none of them are both cis AND straight – the only (seemingly) straight character is trans. The supporting cast is also incredibly diverse and look!! At that body diversity!! It’s heartwarming, heartbreaking, absolutely hilarious and very queer and unfortunately finished, though that does mean you can binge and don’t have to fear any horrible cliffhangers! If you need more convincing I once wrote a post about itย but if I’ve got your attention, please read it either on the Webtoon site or app – it’s completely free for you but supports the artist.

Rock and Riot

IT’S GREASE BUT QUEER LIKE COME ON YOU NEED THIS. Shoot Around is very diverse when it comes to sexualities and gender identities, but Rock and Riot?? I wasย blown away. >big>So many different identities but all these characters are so much more than that. Also!! As you can see there’s also diversity when it comes to race and bodies! Rock and Riot takes place in the fifties and follows two (later three) gangs: a girl gang, a boy gang and a non-binary gang. The first two gangs have a rivalry together, while the third one is just off having a Good Timeโ„ข. These kids are just so silly and relatable and it’s just adgjs They stand up for what is right and fight for each other – I can’t say too much without giving it all away but damn the scenes I’m talking about were empowering. Also THE BEST, MOST ICONICโ„ข coming out scene of all time. You can read the comic on Tumblrย  but if you need more convincing you can read my old post about it

Lumberjanes

You might have heard of Lumberjanes, as it’s pretty popular around the book blogging community (for non-superhero related comics anyway) but if not have no fear these kids are queer! Couldn’t help myself. Anyway not all of them are (at least not confirmed) But Mal and Molly are in love and it’s adorable and justย everything, Jo is a trans girl and later on we get a non-binary character. It takes place at a summer camp in magical woods with monsters, not all of them friendly, but that’s okay because these girls are always up for an adventure. It’s silly, it’s fun, it’s cute. READ IT. And if I haven’t convinced you yet, here’s my old post on it

Goldie Vance

Did someone say Nancy Drew but she’s black and queer – that someone is me. I said that. HELLO MEET GOLDIE VANCE SHE’S A TEEN DETECTIVE, HELLA SMART, LOVES CARS AND RACING IN THEM AND SHE HAS A HELLA COOL GIRLFRIEND*. Goldie Vance is cute, fun and colourful. I mean look at that art?? Goldie isn’t the only girl interested in cars – there are multiple girls who are, who work on them and who race as well. There are a bunch of interesting characters and it’s just so worth diving into?? Though if I didn’t have you at ‘Nancy Drew but she’s black and queer’ I don’t know how to convince you further. Though I did write a post on this wonderful comic once upon a time that you could read if I haven’t convinced you yetย

* I’m not jealous you are

DC Bombshells

Can you believe I haven’t written a post on this comic yet even though I love it very very much. I can because I’m lazy and forgetfulย  ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ Anyway, DC Bombshells takes place during World War II in an alternative universe where most male superheroes don’t exist (or aren’t superheroes like Bruce Wayne) and puts DC’s women – superheroes and villains alike – in the spotlight. It’s very political, but also just a lot of fun. One of my favourite things about this comic is their take on the Bat Fam, as it includes a bunch of teens/young adults who were inspired by Batwoman, took up her name and decided to keep Gotham save while Batwoman is in Europe fighting the nazi’s. They’re a very diverse group and I just love those kids. The comic has multiple queer characters (and a bunch of POC as well!) and f/f relationships, though it’s been so long since I read this and I’m super behind, so I don’t want to go into too much detail in case I remember something wrong. I started to reread it last year so that I could write a proper post but guess I should start rereading again dgksjshg

And that’s part I! I still have some others to share so if nothing here interests you, part II might have the perfect comic rec for you!

Have you read any of these? What’s your favourite LGBTQIAP+ comic? Let me know in the comments!

The Monthly Hufflepuff March // SUPPORT LESBIAN JESUS’ NEW ALBUM

yeah so my title is basically just promoting Hayley Kiyoko and I have no regrets – besides I do talk about her album so???

Uhhh I’m going back home in less than two weeks??

I honestly can’t believe how fast these months have gone by! But I’m getting ahead of myself, I’ll talk about that more later on in this post

๐Ÿ’›ย More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer โญโญโญย An important read that deals with abuse, but a bit too heavy for me. I personally needed a bit more of a balance between lighter and heavier moments, but that may be because abuse is a topic very near to me.

๐Ÿ’›ย Head Over Heels (Geek Girl #5) by Holly Smale โญโญโญโญโญMy favourite of the month! Not that it had a lot of competition with all these three star reads haha, but still! That doesn’t make me love this one any less. Harriet has grown so much, which is very apparent in this book. It was just such a fun read, which I really needed. I love Harriet, her friends and especially her family so much, I’m so sad that I only have one book left!

๐Ÿ’›ย The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials #1) by Philip PullmanโญโญโญSo this took me over a month to read. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy it at all, but it was just very,ย veryย slow for me. The edition I borrowed from the uni library has all three books, but honestly I don’t have the time or energy to try and get through the rest of the trilogy, which is really a shame as I was really excited to try this series. Maybe one day I’ll give it a try again.

๐Ÿ’›ย Lost Boy, Found Boy by Jenn Polishโญโญโญ This one has SO MUCH potential! It’s a queer Peter Pan retelling: Peter is trans and in love with Mir, his Enbyfriend; Gwen (based on Wendy) is in love with Tinkerbell who’sย an asexual lesbian computer interface, Hook is a bisexual cyborg and two of the Lost Boys are also pining for each other. Unfortunately this is really short and underdeveloped, leaving me with a lot of questions about both the world and the characters themselves. While I loved the diversity, the characters were very flat.

๐Ÿ’›ย Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat! volume 1 โญโญโญโญย – Below I just briefly mention the comics I’ve read that I’ve already talked about before and don’t really have anything to say about each month, but Patsy Walker is a new one, so I had to discuss it. Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat has been on my tbr for quite some time now, but I didn’t get to it until now and boy do I wish I read it sooner! It’s such a fun read. Patsy A.K.A. the superhero Hellcat, decides to start a Temp Agency for superheroes and regular people with powers. It’s a great balance between slice of life and superhero, is very diverse and just really cute. If you love Squirrel Girl, I definitely recommend this one as it’s humour really reminded me of it.

๐Ÿ’›ย Nothing But Sky by Amy Truebloodย  โญโญโญย – Definitely a case of ‘it’s not you it’s me’. I couldn’t really connect to the characters or the writing, though I did enjoy this one! There’s a lot of love about this one: a kickass girl who constantly challenges the patriarchy and is a wing walker, a love interest who deals with PTSD, a crew who supports each other no matter what and is more like family… I’m really sad I didn’t enjoy this one more!

๐Ÿ’›ย The Radical Element (A Tyranny of Petticoats #2) โญโญโญ– Full review should be up sometime next week (I hope haha), but this was a lovely anthology of kickass girls. Some short stories were less good than others of course, which always happens, but overall I’d definitely recommend this one.

๐Ÿ’›ย Lady Mary by Lucy Worsleyย โญโญโญ – As I didn’t know anything about Queen Mary I going in, this was very interesting to read. It also shows us a different side of the affair between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Everything I knew about that affair focused on the two main players, but I didn’t know anything about what Henry’s daughter Mary went through. The writing style was a bit too simple for me and I was bored at times, but all in all still an interesting read. Full review to come next week!

COMICS:ย Lumberjanes #47 // Lumberjanes #48 //ย Giant Days #36 // Ms. Marvel #28 // Runaways (2017) #7

Can you believe that I’m going home so soon already?? I can’t! I haven’t finished my last two essays yet, but I’m hoping to start writing the third one tomorrow as I’m mostly finished collecting all my information. I’m a bit worried having to balance writing my last two essays and the schoolwork of my new classes once I get back, but I’ll figure it out somehow.

My housemates have left for the Easter Break, except for one. He was actually gone at the start of the week – for almost three entire days I had the entire place for myself and no offense but it was so nice. Anxiety aside, while my housemates are friendly enough, they just don’t think of anyone but themselves. Two weeks ago they came back from going out or something in the middle of the night and were superloud.* Two of them decided to game, and after that watch football. They turned up the volume real loud and were yelling too, until about five in the morning. My anxiety is just too bad for me to go out and say anything, so I just,, had to suffer. Also I just wish they’d keep the kitchen clean? Like I can handle messy, but it’s just,, gross. I knowwww that that’s what a stereotypical students’ dorm looks like, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it! When they were all gone I cleaned the kitchen, because I thought no one would be able to make it dirty again. Until that evening when one of them came back. Next morning it was as if I had never cleaned it

* This is sadly not a rare occurance by the way my sleep here is,, not great

Thankfully my mom is coming soon, and she’s just,, ready to fight him lmao. If he turns up the music again in the middle of the night (like he did last night thanks mate) she’s just going to go the living room, say ‘excuse me’, pull out the plug and then if he says anything she’s just going to pretend to not speak English adsfbsgn*

* I don’t think I really make my pettiness known on this blog as it doesn’t really come up, but in real life I’m quite petty, especially when I’m with my best friend and like,, I definitely got it from my mom sdjdgf

Speaking of my mom!! I’ve been looking forward to her coming since,, pretty much ever since I got here lol. I’m really close to my mom, so even though I Facetime her multiple times a day I still really miss her, especially since I’ve never been away from home for this long. I can’t wait to show her around the city, see Hairspray and Love Simon!!

Friday evening I decided to treat myself after being so busy with my essays all week and go to shopping mall to (hopefully) buy Hayley Kiyoko’s Expectations. I also had to go to Boots because my hair dryer was broken, as in, smoke was coming out.

I could’ve gone sooner that week, but Expectations was coming out Friday so… I was a bit worried they might not have it since the HMV website said it was out of stock but…

So uhh yeah I haven’t been listening to anything else since Friday.ย I honestly can’t pick a favourite song? They’re all so good?? And all the songs sound so nice together?? It’s truly a masterpiece #supportlesbianjesuspls

Once I got a new hair dryer I decided to see if Claire’s had any new Doug the Pug plushies – I don’t remember if I mentioned it before, but I found out that Claire’s sold them a few weeks ago and immediately went to the one in the shopping center to see if they too had them and there were exactly two left!* So today I took a look to see if they had a different one and well…

This is the nineth plushie I bought while here in three months adfjbsh In my defense one of them is for my mom like I said and also LOOK AT HIM WEARING A DUCK OUTFIT HOW COULD I RESIST**

* My mom wanted one as well to turn into a keychain and hang it on her bag
** I’m turning 21 in a little over 2 months gsnbdhg

On my way out of the shopping center I saw an ad for Love Simon and then when I got off the bus I ran into a cat. Literally. We looked at each other and it ran towards me, wanting to be pet #bless

Also Keiynan Lonsdale released a new song called Kiss The Boy and not only is it SUCH a bop but it’s also so beautiful and boy he got me crying please listen to it

On Saturday I met up with my friend from the exchange students group and a friend of hers who I had met before when we went to see Black Panther, because they’re both going home today. It was a fun day and a much deserved break from my essays haha. In the evening we met up again to eat together.

๐Ÿ’›ย I created a new writing tag called ‘Your WIP in Gifs Tag’
๐Ÿ’›ย I reviewed More Than We Can Tell, an important story about abuse
๐Ÿ’›ย I wrapped up February and talked about meeting a blogger friend, cats, Chinese New Year, Black Panther and other stuff
๐Ÿ’›ย I reviewed Lost Boy, Found Boy, a futuristic Neverland where no one is straight
๐Ÿ’›ย I shared another monthly mixtape, this time with the theme ‘petrichor’: a pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather
๐Ÿ’›ย I reviewed Nothing But Sky, a historical story about a kickass girl wing walker, though it fell a bit short for me

So I usually reserve these for Weekly Hufflepuffs, but who knows when I’ll have the time for one of those!

๐Ÿ’›ย Sarah @ Written Word World talks about the downsides of ARCs (= Actually Reviewers Crying)
๐Ÿ’›ย Fadwa @ Word Wonders reviewsย The Summer of Jordi Perez, a cute f/f romance with fat rep, though she also warns about the erasure ofย multi-gendered attraction
๐Ÿ’›ย Analee @ Book Snacks has some important questions about American high school in YA fiction
๐Ÿ’›ย She also talks about the pressure of writing #ownvoices reviews
๐Ÿ’›ย Elise @ thebookishactress talks about the #BuryYourGays trope
๐Ÿ’›ย Kat @ Life and Other Disasters talks about Netflix’ On My Block, which is an amazing show that you HAVE to watch so read her post to find out why
๐Ÿ’›ย Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books went to Paris, where she went to her first book fair and met some amazing authors
๐Ÿ’›ย She also wonders if book blogging is still relevant
๐Ÿ’›ย Lu @ It’s Lu Again did the Rising Author tag and talks about her writing
๐Ÿ’›ย She also talks about why better body image and other rep in books will help you love yourself
๐Ÿ’›ย Holly @ Nut Free Nerd talks about some London bookshops
๐Ÿ’›ย And she wonders if celebrities have corrupted the feminist movement
๐Ÿ’›ย Vivian @ Writing With Style rates writing tools
๐Ÿ’›ย May @ Forever and Everly also did the Rising Author tag in which she talks about her writing
๐Ÿ’›ย Hannah @ Mortal Reader talks about anxiety and toxic friendships
๐Ÿ’›ย Bridget @ Bridget and Books gives the in’s and out’s of self-hosted blogging
๐Ÿ’›ย Melissa @ Bookish Wandered did the Your WIP in Gifs tag
๐Ÿ’›ย And so did Kat @ Life and Other Disasters

Have you been listening to Hayley Kiyoko’s new album? Or Keiynan Lonsdale new song? Do you have a plushie obsession? What have you been reading? How was your month? Let me know in the comments!

The Weekly Hufflepuff #63 | I Am Eeyore

Good news: Didn’t suffer from a blogging slump this week!

Bad news: I did suffer from my mental health and my period rip

Actually I’ve been putting off this post the entire day because I’m just not feeling good mentally, but I talked to my friend for a bit just now and am feeling slightly better, so let’s wrap this week up

I started What’s a Girl Gotta Do? by Holly Bourne before going to sleep and finished it the next day immediately. I just HAD to finish it before doing anything else. I’m not one of those people who can read until the early mornings. I’ve never tried, because eventually I give in and go to sleep, but I don’t handle lack of sleep well so I’m not planning on trying. Anyway, What’s a Girl Gotta Do? is PHENOMENAL and I can’t wait to scream about it in your faces review it.

Friday on the bus I started Take Me With You by Andrea Gibson and lemme tell you: THAT WAS A MISTAKE. I almost cried on the bus. Then I almost cried at the bus stop. I finished it today in the privacy of my own house and boy was I a crying mess. I immediately reread it again and I know I will reread it again soon. It’s incredibly moving, powerful and beautiful and again, can’t wait to review it.

I also read DC Bombshells #60. 40 more issues to go before I can go on to Bombshells United. This is honestly one of my favourite comics but it’s taking me forever to read it? Once I’m finally caught up a bit I’ll write a post about it.

This morning I woke up feeling in the mood for Harry Potter, so I started to reread Goblet of Fire. I’ve been meaning to reread it for quite some time now as I started to reread the series last year, but other books just got in the way.

I wanted to go to museums this week but the weather has been terrible and life got in the way so unfortunately it didn’t happen. I’m hoping to go visit some museums soon, since some exhibitions will close while I’m in Manchester so I really need to go before I leave.

Weย (Blikopeners – a group of teens/young people (you’re a teen when you start) who work at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam) wrote our own audiotour, so on Friday we recorded it which was a lot of fun. It felt so professional haha

Yesterday my mom and I went shopping, since we still needed to buy presents for Sinterklaas, which is a Dutch holiday. I also treated myself to this:

IT’S AN EEYORE BLANKET AND IT’S THE BEST THING I EVER BOUGHT IT EVEN HAS A TAIL IT’S SO COMFY AND WARM AND SOFT

Here’s a picture of my grandpa wearing it. He came over for dinner yesterday. He told us that the other day a guy at his retirement home whom he really doesn’t like walked past him, and then he (my grandpa) gave him the middle finger??

My mom: why??
My grandpa: because I don’t like himย ๐Ÿ˜ค and he doesn’t get itย ๐Ÿ˜ค he still doesn’tย ๐Ÿ˜ค

My grandpa has that old people mentallity where they don’t care anymore and just do what they want. Honestly part of me wishes I could’ve had that mentallity last term when people didn’t do their work lmao.

So those were the highlights.* Like I said before, I’ve been struggling with my period and mental health, but I’ve continued to talk to my friend while writing this post and it is making me feel a bit better. My mental health is always worse during my period so hopefully it will both be over soon.

* My grandfather coming over was a highlight, not him giving a man the finger

I almost forgot that I actually wrote this week! I was supposed to go out with a friend, but unfortunately she had to cancel because of school. So I spent the day blogging and writing. Not as much writing as I would’ve liked, but I always have trouble writing while on my period. Either I’m in too much pain or I just can’t concentrate.

Anyway, recently I’ve been struggling a lot with my beginning. I realised that I didn’t like it at all, so now I started to rewrite it. So yep, I’ve already started to rewrite my second draft lol*

* I hadn’t gotten that far yet anyway so it’s okay

I’m MUCH happier with it now though, so it was worth it. Hopefully I’ll feel like writing more next week.

๐Ÿ’›ย I talked about when reading good books make you feel insecure about your writing
๐Ÿ’›ย I wrapped up November, meaning I had a crisis about 2017 almost being over and time going by so fast like every year
๐Ÿ’›ย I reviewed Paintbrush and boy I did not like it. Apart from flat characters and a borderline unhealthy relationship, it also had girls shaming other girls

๐Ÿ’› Cait @ Paper Fury talked about how her writing habits have changed in 2017ย
๐Ÿ’› Laura @ The Book Corps wrote an open letter to Goodreads and Netgalley in regard to their recent changes in their policies when it comes to international bloggers
๐Ÿ’› Elm @ Just Call Me Elm Or Something shared her musings while she was on a train
๐Ÿ’› Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books is celebrating 3 years of blogging – can you believe she’s only been doing this for three years??
๐Ÿ’› She also talked about the fear of editing her WIP and some character aesthetics
๐Ÿ’› Em @ Yellow’s the Word shared 18 memories from 18 yearsย
๐Ÿ’› Birdie Bookworm made great aesthetics for The Book Aesthetics Tagย
๐Ÿ’› Sarah @ Written Word Worlds talks about how some of her favourite authors wrote some of her least favourite books
๐Ÿ’› Balie @ Nerd in New York talks about types of bookworms
๐Ÿ’› Kat @ Life and Other Disasters did the All Hallows Write Tag
๐Ÿ’› Hannah @ Mortal Reader talks about lies book bloggers tell

The Monthly Hufflepuff | Where Did 2017 Go

I think that it was about half-way through November that I realised that I had completely forgotten about my October wrap-up, so I guess I’ll wrap it up along with Novemberย ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿ’› Masked by J.D. Wrightย โ˜… – Yikes yikes and yikes. I went into a lot more detail in my review of course, but basically it had potential to be a fun read but instead it had a lot of problematic aspects

๐Ÿ’› Danger! Women Artists at Work by Debra N. Mancoff โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… –ย Really interesting, fun and inspiring read, but I wish it had featured more women of colour and queer ladies. Frida Kahlo is featured, but her sexuality isn’t mentioned, so if you’re unfamiliar with her you wouldn’t know that. Maybe there are more queer artists featured in this, but at some point I got too tired to google every artist to see if she might be queer since until I quit none of them were (or at least it wasn’t known if they were)

๐Ÿ’› Chasing Eveline by Leslie Hauser โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – I have so much love for this book. It’s such a refreshing read: realistic, a wonderful friendship between a boy and a girl without any romance, a healthy romance that didn’t overtake the plot, family, fun antics… 10/10 would recommend

Me throwing Chasing Eveline at all of you

๐Ÿ’› Zodiac Starforce: Cries of the Prince #2ย – uhhh I don’t really remember this issue woops. I love Zodiac Starforce though and I’m definitely enjoying this sequel

๐Ÿ’› Giant Days #31 and #32ย – Have I shouted at you guys to read Giant Days yet because please do. I barely ever laugh out loud while reading comics and Giant Days made me laugh out loud multiple times. It’s about three amazing female college students, their antics and their wonderful friendship.

๐Ÿ’› Hi-Fi Fight Club #2 – woops another issue I don’t remember?? Again, enjoying this one though. It’s about girls working at a record store who have a secret club in which they solve mysteries and kick ass

๐Ÿ’› Ms. Marvel #23 and #24 – LOVED this team up and I love how they’re currently exploring how the past arcs are impacting Kamala. If you aren’t reading Ms. Marvel yet what are you doing

what u doing fam

๐Ÿ’› The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up The Universe โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…ย – SO. MUCH. FUN.

๐Ÿ’› The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wildeย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – For someone who’s been shouting for about four/five (?) years that I love Oscar Wilde I should really read more of his works. Thus I finally picked up The Importance of Being Earnest and I’m so glad I did. It was such a delight

๐Ÿ’› Runaways volumes 1 – 8ย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… for the first 7 andย โ˜… for the 8th volume – The first seven volumes were fun and these kids definitely grew on me. The problem I have with this comic is the pace. I felt it was way too rushed and it took so long for the characters to grow on me. They felt pretty flat to me and so did their relationships with each other (something I find the tv show is doing a better job of so far). Don’t even get me started on volume 8 I found it such a mess yikes. I don’t even want to consider it canon, especially with the way they treated Victor

๐Ÿ’› Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoonย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – Ahhh such mixed feelings. I knew there was a lot of controversy about this one before going in and I definitely get where people are coming from. I can’t say anything about it without spoiling it though. My mixed feelings aren’t just because of that controversial thing* but also because it felt very insta-lovey and there were times were I got bored, despite that at first I really liked the writing style and the different formats. No scratch that, I’m in LOVE with the different formats. Controversy aside, this book is so artsy. Besides emails it also has really cool illustrations?? I wasn’t expecting that

๐Ÿ’› Emma volume 1 by Kaoru Moriย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – Fun and cute, but nothing special

๐Ÿ’› Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertali (reread)ย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… –ย For some reason I didn’t love it the first time as much as I loved it the second time around – I don’t know if it was the hype getting to me back then or my mood (sometimes I read/watch something and I feel a bit meh about it, but then the second time around I’m in love?? My brain is weird) or the fact that I wasn’t out yet and still struggling with my own feelings and couldn’t appreciate it as much as I could now. WHO KNOWS. Point is I love this book very much

๐Ÿ’› Swan Song by Charlotte Wilsonย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… ย – The way this one handles grief is very powerful and the romance is cute, but it didn’t blow me away

๐Ÿ’› Lumberjanes #43 and #44 – What can I say about Lumberjanes without repeating myself? It’s still very much enjoyable, the magic and weirdness of it never gets old and I love my girls. FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX

๐Ÿ’› Vengeance Road by Erin Bowmanย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – Great action scenes, but unfortunately quite a few scenes in-between were a bit boring. Review will be up next week!

๐Ÿ’› Karina’s Silver Shoes by Denise Marques Leitaoย โ˜… – SO CONFUSING. I DON’T GET IT. AT ALL. If you want a few more details, you can find my review here

๐Ÿ’› America #8 – eh I dunno? I really want to love this comic, and some of the issues so far have been really good, but this issue had a pacing problem which more of the issues have.

๐Ÿ’› Lumberjanes 2017 Special: Faire and Squareย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – The girls and Jen go to a Robin Hood themed fair!! And there’s a pterodactyl!! Also they re-enact a telenovela to cheer up Ripley!! If you love Lumberjanes and haven’t read this special yet I’d definitely recommend it

๐Ÿ’› Lumberjanes 2016 Special: Makin’ The Ghost Of Itย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – It’s still fun because it’s Lumberjanes but I felt a bit meh about it?

๐Ÿ’› DC Bombshells #56 – #59 – Whyyy am I so slow when it comes to this comic while it’s one of my favourites.

๐Ÿ’› Paintbrush by Hannah Bucchinย โ˜…โ˜… – Mixed feelings galore!! This could’ve been a fun, cute read, and in a way it was? But it also wasn’t? Character driven novels are great, except when you don’t like the characters #woops Full review should be up soonish

๐Ÿ’› The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertali (reread)ย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – Still as cute and fun and wonderful and wholesome as the first time around!! Read my review here

๐Ÿ’› What’s a Girl Gotta Do? by Holly Bourneย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… – Just what I needed oh my goodness. THIS WAS SO GOOD. Okay so it made me feel insecure about my writing, but it was also so empowering, inspiring and fun and just ahhh. ALL THE FEELINGS. GOOD FEELINGS. BUT ALSO RAGE BECAUSE SEXISM. Anyway I can’t wait to review this one

Holidays!! Last month of 2018!!* Last full month until I leave for Manchester!!

Can you tell I’m freaking out a bit!!**

I mean obviously I’m excited but ahhh I’m also panicking. I don’t know yet how much I’ll blog. Like I said in my last weekly wrap up, I hit a bit of a blogging slump last week. This week I’m actually doing fine? So who knows what will happen. The most important thing is that I’m enjoying myselfย ๐Ÿ™†๐Ÿป

* Where did 2017 go?? What happened to it?? Why is time going so fast??
** A bit?? A bit?? Try a lot

How has your month been? Are you freaking out over 2017 almost being over? Any exciting plans for the holidays, and for 2018? What was your favourite book of the month? Let me know in the comments!

The Weekly Hufflepuff #62 | I’m In a Blogging Slump????

Haha so yeah, I’m sort of in a blogging slump? Which I honestly didn’t expect would happen, considering usually my blogging slumps are caused by the exhaustion and stress of school. But I don’t have school? And I’ve been feeling pretty relaxed most days?

Yet, I haven’t felt like blogging these past two weeks. There were a few days where I wasn’t feeling that great (stupid cold) or wasn’t really feeling well mentally, but there were other days where I was feeling pretty great and I was in such a creative mood – just not a creative mood for blogging? I’ve been working on my photography and even writing (!!), but I just didn’t have the energy, motivation or inspiration to blog. Which has been pretty weird. I’m afraid that soon I’ll fall out of love with blogging, but I’m just going to try and listen to my heart. If I feel like blogging (like today!), I’ll blog. If I don’t, I won’t, because otherwise I’m seriously worried it will start to feel like a chore and before you know it I’ll be in an even worse blogging slump. Sooo while originally I wanted a schedule of two posts a week plus my weekly wrap up, I’m not sure if that will happen? But we’ll see

ANYWAY let’s wrap up these last two weeks

I started Vengeance Road sometime at the start of the month, and at first I thought it would be a pretty quick read, but… I dunno? It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t exactly blow me away either. I guess I also had some other expectations? If everything goes according to plan I’ll be writing my review later today, so it should be up sometime this week.

I also finally finished Karina’s Silver Shoes, which really took me a while. I’ve already reviewed this one, so I won’t get into that much detail, but boy was this one a disappointment.

I was in the mood to reread The Upside of Unrequited, which I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I still can’t believe I didn’t catch the Simon vs references the first time around? Sure, it had been over a year since I read Simon, but??? Simon is literally mentioned by his name??

I also read some comics like usual: caught up on Ms. Marvel, Lumberjanes and America, finally continued DC Bombshells (I love this comic I don’t understand why I’m so slow) and read some more Runaways volumes because the show really made me want to continue. I’m not sure if I’ll read the other volumes after Vaughn’s run though. I really hated Joss Whedon’s volume and the next ones don’t seem that great either. I’m tempted to just skip to Rainbow Rowell’s new issues.

So I’ve really been enjoying my time off! Well minus my cold and the days my mental health wasn’t that great, but other than that? Boy this break has been aย blessing. I mean I’ve even been writing?? But I’ll get into that later, because I can actually include a writing section in this wrap up.

Like I said above, I’ve also been working on my photography. And trying to post more on my photography Instagram account haha. Speaking of which…

* Cheeky self-promo there

The other day my friend came over to hold a photoshoot, but we also just hung out, since we hadn’t seen each other since last term (not that that was that long ago and we do talk every day through imessage, but still haha). It was a lot of fun, but I was still a bit ill so spending so much time outside in the cold was a bit too much haha.

Last week I was sick of staying inside, so I decided to go to the Rijksmuseum. I didn’t know what kind of temporary exhibitions were on, so I decided to check them out while I was there. One of them was about being stateless in The Netherlands which was really beautiful (though not something I needed when I really didn’t want to cry with my stuffy nose!) and the other one was about Matthijs Maris, a Dutch artist who I had never heard of but it was really interesting and inspiring!ย There was another one, I’m not sure about what, but one look and I knew it wasn’t my thing haha. After those temporary exhibitions I spend some time in the regular collection, but soon I started to feel ill again so it was time to go home.

Oh! I’m ย also slowly getting grades back from last term and so far so good!ย ๐Ÿ™†๐Ÿป

Also I’m now OFFICIALLY accepted at the university in Manchester for my term abroad! I’ll be studying history for my minor and thankfully they can provide me with a dorm during my stay. I’m still super anxious about it, but at least all of this is now settled

Like I said: I’ve been writing! Last week I decided to print everything I’ve written so far for my WIP (my Camp NaNo project of the past two years, I’ve talked about it in more details here), something I’ve wanted to do for weeks now, but couldn’t because

So I FINALLY printed everything out, started to reread, make notes and everything and now, even though I haven’t finished my first draft yet, started on my second draft. Maybe I should’ve finished my first draft first, but this is motivating me to actually write so I’m going with it.

I’ve also been working on plot holes and the like, and I’ve been working on my outline, as I had never figured out what would happen next and how things would exactly end. I’ve made a timeline of when everything’s supposed to happen and I’m so excited to write again

Though I’m also really sad and kinda scared to actually finish this thing??

Though I’m also already thinking of a sort of sequel/companion novel when this one isn’t even done yet haha

๐Ÿ’› I talked about where I’ve been, what I’ve been up to and explained that I’m taking a break from schoolย
๐Ÿ’› I reviewed Swan Song, a book about overcoming your grief, finding yourself and ballet
๐Ÿ’› I shared a recipe of how to make your own writer in case your stuck and want someone else to take over for youย
๐Ÿ’› I reviewed Karina’s Silver Shoes, which was VERY confusingย

I’m pretty behind on blog posts, and I don’t mind at all? I’ve bookmarked quite a few posts that I wanted to read, but I’m very tempted to just delete them all and start over, because boy am I never going to have the time to read them all and read all the new posts coming out all the time as well. Anyway, I don’t think any of these were actually posted during these past two weeks? I’m not sure, but hey old posts deserve some love too!
