The Weekly Hufflepuff #12

This week was crazy: the new term started, NaNo wasn’t going well, wasn’t going well, and then Friday happened (I don’t think I have to elaborate on that). But let’s talk about books first, because books make us (usually) happy.

whatiread

  • I finished Magnus Chase. I really enjoyed it, but I’ll talk more about it in my review (which I hope to write soon)
  • I STARTED WINTER. I’m not that far yet (at all), but so far so good. I DON’T WANT IT TO END THOUGH

nanowrimo

Last week I wrote 15.507 words, this week… 4195. It isn’t that bad, but compared to last week, and how motivated I was… Well, I’m disappointed. Most of those words were written on Tuesday, so I could’ve written so much more if I had written that same amount every day. Except Tuesday was the only day I felt really motivated.

I don’t really know what happened on Monday, but suddenly something switched inside of me and I didn’t feel okay. At all. Things went a bit better on Tuesday (thus the word count), but then while writing, the switch turned again, and it didn’t turn off or however I’m supposed to describe it, until Thursday. I just felt empty and depressed (don’t worry though, I’m really fine now). I didn’t even go to school on Thursday (not wanting to go to school for reasons like that hasn’t happened in a while now, especially not at this school as I’m actually having fun). Anyway, I wasn’t sure if I was going to tell you guys this, but then I thought: ‘why the hell not?’ There’s nothing to be ashamed about.

So that’s why I didn’t write as much as I liked, but I’ll try to find a snippet to share with you guys like last week.

excerpt2

I hope that if you’re participating in NaNo that you’re doing better than I am!

personal

The new term started this week, and so far it really does seem to be less busy than last term. I hope it stays that way haha. ALSO. While I don’t have every Wednesday off anymore (it’s every other week now), we do have Thursdays off (not officially, Thursday’s class has been moved to Tuesday) which obviously I’m really happy with. We have to do quite a bit of reading every week for Friday, so now I can do that on Thursday!

Speaking of the new term, it also means new teachers. I haven’t met all of them yet, but I really like the teacher for ‘news portal’ (where we make our own news website) and ‘news item’ (where we learn how to write news items). She’s really funny (dry humour plus sarcasm) and relaxed

Like I said, I wasn’t doing so well mentally, but really: don’t worry! I’m fine now

To make me feel better my mom took me shopping this week, so naturally that meant a trip to the bookstore. WINTER HELL YESSSSS. I also got Shadow and Bone since I’ve wanted to read that for years, but for some reason never did. We also went to Popcult, which is well on it’s way to become a Dutch Hot Topic. I really want to write a Blogsterdam post about it this month! We ended the day at Subway, where I had a delicious chicken teriyaki sandwich *almost literally drools at the memory*

Yesterday was a lot of fun: one of my
friends from secondary school came
over. We talked a lot (we hadn’t seen each other in weeks, and some things just can’t be talkedabout through What’s App) and we are finally caught up on Pretty Little Liars. GUYS WHY WERE PEOPLE SO DISAPPOINTED ABOUT THE 6A FINALE?! I LOVED IT. The end was a bit abrupt, BUT OH MY GOD THAT PLOT TWIST.

FRANCESCA ZAPPIA, AUTHOR OF MADE YOU UP, FAVOURITED MY TWEET, RETWEETED MY TWEET, AND RESPONDED TO MY TWEET. THEN I RESPONDED TO HER (AFTER CALMING DOWN) AND SHE FAVOURITED THAT TWEET TOO. SHE ALSO LIKED MY PHOTO ON INSTAGRAM AND REPOSTED IT

LOOOOOOOOK *eternal flailing*

Today I will bake a pie/cake/thing. My mom thinks I might like this kind of pie/cake, so we’ll see. I like baking though, so whether I like the taste of it or not doesn’t matter. I used to bake apple pie a lot as a kid, but I never ate it haha.

And that was this week. I’m glad mine ended with a fun night with my friend, but I know a lot of people are hurting right now, not just in Paris. Everyone who’s lost someone or has gone through one of the horrible events of Friday is in my thoughts. I hope that all of you reading this had a good week ❤

Review: Made You Up by Francesca Zappia

Made You Up

Genre: Young adult | contemporary
Goodreads rating: 4.14
My rating: ★★★★★

summary

Alex fights a daily battle to figure out the difference between reality and delusion. Armed with a take-no-prisoners attitude, her camera, a Magic 8-Ball, and her only ally (her little sister), Alex wages a war against her schizophrenia, determined to stay sane long enough to get into college. She’s pretty optimistic about her chances until classes begin, and she runs into Miles. Didn’t she imagine him? Before she knows it, Alex is making friends, going to parties, falling in love, and experiencing all the usual rites of passage for teenagers. But Alex is used to being crazy. She’s not prepared for normal (Goodreads).

review

Made You Up is probably my favourite book I read this year, hands down. I wish I could’ve reviewed this earlier, but I read this at the beginning of last month and that was such a busy, crazy, stressful month I just didn’t have the time. I still remember it pretty well though, and I actually already reviewed it for the magazine we made at school (sadly it wasn’t placed – there were only so many pages and we all had to write four articles) so I think it’s still in my head. Besides, it made such a great impact on me I haven’t forgotten much yet.

So Made You Up is about schizophrenia, but it’s not. While Alex is schizophrenic, she’s much more than that and the book focuses on so much more than her mental illness. Alex is her own person besides the fact that she is schizophrenic, which I was so pleased with. I wanted to stand on a rooftop and share my happiness at full volume with everyone.

”I was a schizophrenic, not a damn invalid.”

TELL THEM ALEX

I finished this book so quickly. I just couldn’t stop turning the pages. It’s beautifully written; the characters are three-dimensional, beautiful, funny, realistic, flawed… THEY’RE MY NEW BABIES; there are so many plot twists oh my GAWD; THE SHIP IS SO CUTE; it’s about friendship and family and fitting in and JUST THIS BOOK GUYS I CAN’T NOT FANGIRL ABOUT IT.

While the romance was ADORABLE and fun to read and I just love it (OTP guys), it’s not the main focus of the book (just like schizophrenia isn’t). This book is about so much at the same time and it does it brilliantly. Also the friends Alex makes are just so precious. It just felt so realistic. Just like the romance is. They slowly become friends and then more. Also Miles is such a precious cutie I will protect him at all costs (so don’t worry you will NOT die during the zombie apocalypse. I will protect you Miles)

And did I mention there’s also a mystery aspect? LIKE CAN THIS BOOK CAN GET ANY BETTER?! It’s like my perfect book minus fantasy aspects (BUT I CAN LIVE WITH THAT). Guys this book is worthy of its breathtaking cover and all the hype. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL I CAN’T. I’m so sorry this review is all over the place but… I just can’t. Favourite book of the year, hands down. I doubt I’ll read something more amazing than this (not counting rereads since I’m planning on rereading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone again next month).

Also can we fangirl about how Francesca Zappia favourited and retweeted this tweet?

Speaking of Francesca Zappia! Check out her DeviantArt for awesome Made You Up art!

And now I just want to reread it… Maybe I will be able to write a more structured review after rereading it haha (but I’ll probably be an even bigger mess so never mind).

HAVE YOU READ THIS GLORIOUS BOOK YET?! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR PICK IT UP PICK IT UP IT’S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PERFECT EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER IT’S BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT AND I CAN’T I THINK I WILL SERIOUSLY REREAD IT AFTER I’VE FINISHED MAGNUS CHASE

The Weekly Hufflepuff #9

I’m really proud of myself that so far I haven’t missed one weekly wrap up! I really thought I would’ve at least missed one, because I was too tired, lazy or busy. But I haven’t!

whatiread

  • I finally finished Cry of the Wolf by Rachel Roberts! I will write a review for the first three books in the Avalon series soon.
  • I read Made You Up by Francesca Zappia and oh my God guys read it because it’s perfection (warning: possibility of a reading slump afterwards)

personal

In my last weekly wrap up I completely forgot to tell you guys about the pizza! You see Monday the 21st we had a meeting with all the editors to check everyone’s first big article for the magazine (I think I might’ve told you guys already, but in case I didn’t: one of our subjects is ‘First Issue’ in which we have to make our own magazine). It took us hours and at some point someone suggested to order pizza haha. It was delicious and fun. I can’t believe I forgot to mention it last week!

I stayed home for one more day on Monday, and it’s a good thing I did: the next day I felt really good! I still have a cough, but I’m energetic and excited to do all the things!

Wednesday was such a productive day for me. I don’t even really remember what I did, but I did a lot of homework and even wrote a blogpost for The Feministas. Considering I missed my last three blogging days before that, I’m really proud haha.

On Thursday I found out about YALFestNL and I’m still fangirling haha. I immediately bought my tickets (I was so lucky to get Early Bird tickets)

Saturday was another productive day! I wrote two blogposts and did quite a lot of homework again. For the past few weeks my weekends were anything but productive. I did the things that I had to do for Monday and then I read or watched tv. I felt very unlike myself, but I didn’t feel good so I couldn’t concentrate on my homework!

I’m still not caught up on Doctor Who *dies*, but GUYS. ONCE UPON A TIME. OH MY.

what I posted-2

elsewhere

I’m still slowly catching up, so some of these post might not have been posted this week!

And that was it for another week! I can’t believe I’ll start my sixth week as a journalism student tomorrow. Ever since I started studying journalism, time has gone by so fast. But enough about me. How was your week?
