Guest Post: Myers-Briggs and Hogwarts by Elisabeth Wheatley

I came late to the Harry Potter party, but seven books, eight movies, one Pottermore account, a Slytherin tie, a Golden Trio snow globe, and various HP shirts later, here I am. While I was still getting into the Harry Potter fandom, I started reading the research of Dr. Kiersey, one of the foremost Myers-Briggs authorities.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with it, the sixteen personalities outlined by Myers-Briggs are determined by extroversion/introversion (E/I), sensing/intuitive (S/N), thinking/feeling (T/F) and judging/perceiving (J/P).  These sixteen personalities fall into four subcategory temperaments—Artisans, Idealists, Rationals, and Guardians. They can have different names in different scoring systems, but that’s the one I will use. While reading, I realized that the four temperaments translated remarkably well to the archetypes of the four Hogwarts houses. Let’s take a look.

Gryffindor “Courage and Daring”—SP “Artisans”

Those of the SP “artisan” temperament are the most impulsive  people you will ever meet. Kind of like most Gryffindors. They tend to pay less attention to status and generally see others as equals. With a penchant for boldness and unconventional ideas, they embody the Gryffindor tendency for bravery—often because they simply don’t stop to consider consequences. (Harry Potter is generally believed to be an SP and I have to concur.)

Ravenclaw “Wisdom and Knowledge”—NF “Idealists”

The Ravenclaw desire for knowledge can also be associated with the “rational” personality type. However, Cho Chang, Luna Lovegood, and also what we know of Rowena Ravenclaw fits the “idealist” best. NF’s are the natural poets, dreamers, and empaths of the world. Often dubbed bookworms, they soak in the world on a conceptual, almost spiritual level. Their primary drive is the betterment and discovery of self, the question of “who am I?” Definitely Ravenclaw.

Slytherin “Cunning and Ambition”—NT “Rationals”

Dr. Kiersey writes that the NT “rational” personality type revolves around power—be it the possession of power, an attraction to power, or simply understanding of how it works. I cannot think of anything more Slytherin. NT’s value competence above all else, in themselves as well as in those around them. They also often share the highly Slytherin trait of cloudy morality and fudging the rules. However, they can still make imaginative, devoted romantic partners and fiercely loyal friends.

As a Slytherin ENTJ, I can confirm everything in this section firsthand. Don’t look at me like that. I use my powers for good, I swear!

Hufflepuff  “Loyality and Courage”—SJ “Guardians”

Like Hufflepuffs, SJ’s often get taken for granted. Described as “the bedrock of society” by Dr. Kiersey, SJ’s are the ones who embrace order, routine, and stability. They are the most faithful and devoted of the temperament types and while they can definitely be a riot to hang out with, they take their responsibilities very seriously. Without SJ’s, the rest of us would quite literally die since we mostly have them to thank for hospitals, schools, and—well—society itself.

Now, this isn’t to say all the characters were sorted according to temperament type. I’m pretty sure Hermione was an SJ and Tonks was probably an SP, but the house archetypes definitely align.

So do you know your personality type and Hogwarts house? Let us know in the comments. It’s for science!

Take the Kiersey Temperament Sorter!

Who Am I? | Tag

Thank you Evi for tagging me! This tag looks like a lot of fun (QUIZZES) so of course I had to do this!

What is the meaning of your name?

‘Michelle’ can apparently either mean ‘gift from God’ or ‘who is like God’. Start worshipping me mortals.

Just kidding. Or am I?

What is your Myers Briggs personality type?

test here!

I think the old guy is an INFJ? I have no idea what he’s doing though. The tree looks sad. Poor tree

I’m an INFJ! Apparently us INFJs make up less than one percent of the population. So I’m a legendary Pokémon.

According to the 16personalities website:

As Diplomats (NF), they have an inborn sense of idealism and morality, but what sets them apart is the accompanying Judging (J) trait – INFJs are not idle dreamers, but people capable of taking concrete steps to realize their goals and make a lasting positive impact.

There’s a whole lot more, but I won’t bore you guys with that! It’s all very accurate though.

Some famous INFJs are Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Nicole Kidman (we’re also the same zodiac sign… Coincidence?) and Goethe. Sadly I’m not really familiar with any of the fictional INFJs according to 16personalities, but according to the rest of the internet Remus Lupin is an INFJ, so that makes me very happy.

What is your zodiac sign?

I’m a gemini! Also fun fact: I share my birthday with Jason Isaacs

What Hogwarts house would you be in?

test here!

If I hadn’t gotten Hufflepuff I would’ve had some sort of existential crisis. I would no longer be The Writing Hufflepuff

Hufflepuff – 18
Ravenclaw – 13
Gryffindor – 9
Slytherin – 6

What are your learning styles?

test here!

So I took the test and honestly, I don’t think any of the answers I could choose from really applied to me? So I’m just going to skip this one haha.

Are you more of a left-brain or a right brain kind of person?

test here!

Right! There isn’t that much difference between the percentages though, which makes sense since I’m a pretty rational person.

What is your blood type?

I should probably know this, but I don’t. But just like Evi’s it’s red like the blood of angry men ;) (if the blood of angry men is red, what colour is the blood of happy men?)

What career are you meant to be in?

test here!

Fingers crossed that one day this will be reality!

Which divergent fraction do you belong in?

 test here!

Apparently I belong in Erudite. Um, can anyone remind me what that one stood for? I’m not really a Divergent fan and read the first book years ago. Why doesn’t the quiz explain what it is 😂

What is your birth order?

I have an older half-brother, so I’m the youngest. According to last borns are:

  • Fun-loving –> yes
  • Uncomplicated –> uh no?
  • Manipulative –> gee thanks
  • Outgoing –> uh if I’m comfortable around you, sure!
  • Attention-seeker –> nope nope nope get that spotlight away from me please
  • Self-centered –> N.O.

My half-brother didn’t live with us when we were younger (he stayed with us every other weekend) and now he’s off on his own of course, so maybe I’m more like an only child?

  • Mature for their age –> yes, always have been
  • Perfectionists –> yes
  • Conscientious –> yes
  • Diligent –> yes
  • Leaders –> not really

So that one is more accurate!

Alright, tagging time!

I tag:

Don’t feel obligated to do this of course!

What is your Myers Briggs type? And what does your name mean? Do you outrank me? Oh and most importantly: what is your Hogwarts House?

Q&A Answers!

*laughs awkwardly* This is not late at all. Nope.

I’M SORRY GUYS IT’S NOT LIKE I FORGOT BUT I FORGOT. I had actually answered most questions, but then forgot to post it. Woops. BUT BETTER LATE THAN NEVER RIGHT

Why did you start your blog?

I’m going to cheat and copy-paste my answer from an older blog post haha:

I had blogged before, but not about books and writing, also not on WordPress but on Blogger. I did like writing blogposts (of course I did!), but there was something missing. I wasn’t really writing about my passions (I didn’t even think of book blogging) and I didn’t really meet the nice community that I have met now, so it just wasn’t fun! Last year my mom asked me why I didn’t have a blog and I started thinking: ‘why don’t I blog anymore?’ so I took the leap, started this blog and decided to just write about whatever I wanted.

Are you friends with any other bloggers?

Yes! There are many bloggers I’ve met since I started blogging and consider my friends. I love you all!

If you could be in one fictional world what would it be?

If you could choose only ONE of your book boyfriends to bring to life, who would it be?

HAHA THIS IS SUCH A CRUEL QUESTION. I’m going to go with Percy Jackson. Except he’d never want me because he already has Annabeth (and I would never expect him to dump her for me, I mean, who’d dump Annabeth Chase?!). Though that would be a problem with most if not all of my book boyfriends, since they’re all in relationships… WHY ARE ALL THE FICTIONAL GUYS TAKEN (and why are they fictional)

Do your friends and family read your blog and which celebrity do you most wish read your blog?

My mom has read bits, but the rest of them don’t read it. Most don’t even know about it (my family knows because my mom told them haha).

Which celebrity do you most wish read your blog?

I’m going to go with J.K. Rowling. Not only is she my favourite writer, she is one of my role models and I’d be so honoured if she read my blog (and enjoyed it of course!) .

How do you decide which book you are going to read next?

I’m a mood reader mostly. I look at my shelves to see which ones I haven’t read yet and then pick one, depending on what genre I’m in the mood for. I KNOW THIS ANSWER IS SO UNINTERESTING I’M SORRY.

What do you do to get out of a reading slump?

I do something else (write, watch a tv show/film, play video games etc.) and then pick it up again. If I’m still not in the mood for it I pick up something else. Rereading favourites helps a lot! I think it was in July that I had a bit of a reading slump, so I reread Fangirl, Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door and they really got me out of it.

What is your favourite series?

This is probably not going to surprise anyone (if it does, you must be new! Hi! *waves*): Harry Potter.

If you could bring one fictional character who died back to life, who would it be?

Sirius Black. Or Fred Weasley. I might be more tempted to say Fred, since Sirius is FINALLY reunited with the Marauders and I don’t think he’d be happy if he came back from the dead when all of his friends are dead and they were finally together again (though of course I’d want to bring him back for Harry). If Fred came back he wouldn’t leave anyone behind, plus his family is devastated after his death (GEORGE) and they’d all be so happy to be reunited with him again.

WHY CAN’T I BRING ALL OF THEM BACK TO LIFE (the ones I like of course)

What inspired you to start blogging?

Honestly? I’m not sure haha. I just started, I don’t think anything inspired me! (boring I know haha). I wish I could give you guys a great, inspiring answer to this one, but that would be a lie.

I am a newer blog, and still kind of trying to figure this out, so what kind of content do you find readers like most? The chatty kind where you just talk about your life or structured/planned content?

Interesting question! Both are well liked and commented on, as long as your content is interesting and/or fun, I don’t think it matters!

Who designed your fantastic blog title picture?

I used an app called MomentCam, which has a lot of drawings to choose from. You then use your own photo to get your face in them and tadah! Its’ really easy. I coloured the drawing in myself though, since I found it a bit boring without any colour! Back then I used a Chinese photoshop program (I’m afraid I don’t remember the name), but it can’t be installed on a Mac so now I use Adobe Photoshop, which works just as well!

If you could, which Harry Potter character would you be and why?

I’m not sure I’d want to be a particular character! I’d rather be myself, attend Hogwarts and meet all the characters and hopefully become their friend!

What editor do you use for your post header pics?

For the headers with the drawings of me in it, see the previous question about it. To make them into actual headers I use Canva though. For editing in general I use Photoshop, Fotor and Pixlr.

Are you minoring in anything in university/college?

Nope! (wow, such an interesting answer haha. I’m on fire with the interesting answers)

What do you plan on doing as a career (besides an author) after finishing school?

Journalism! I’d love to work at a magazine or newspaper. Though who knows, I might want to do something else in the journalism field after I’ve studied it! Third and fourth term focus on television and radio – maybe that’s my calling haha.

How long do we have to wait for “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I PRESENT TO YOU MICHELLE’S DEBUT NOVEL” Oh c’mon already! [:

I promise you guys will be the first to know (after my mom and grandfather, sorry they have dibs haha) if I get published! LET’S HOPE NANO WILL HELP TO SHORTEN THE WAIT.

When did you begin to learn English?

I don’t remember the exact age, but when I got my Gameboy Advance. I started learning English through Pokémon and Hamtaro games haha!

Why Hufflepuff? Favourite character from that house?

Pottermore sorted me there, though I did suspect I might be a Hufflepuff before that. I wasn’t sure though, since Hufflepuffs don’t even appear that much throughout the books so I couldn’t really compare myself to anyone.

Tonks or maybe Helga Hufflepuff herself! (“I’ll teach the lot and treat them just the same.“)

Again sorry it took me so long! I have no excuses haha. ANYWAY. I’d ask you guys what fictional characters you’d want to bring back, but I’m afraid to get spoiled haha (plus you might accidentally spoil others in the comment section. We don’t want that!) So I’m going to ask you guys the same question Alex asked me: which celebrity do you wish read your blog?

Dutch Comic Con 2015

The first edition of Dutch Comic Con was this weekend. Because of my aunt’s birthday we went yesterday and now I’m exhausted. If you follow me on Twitter and/or Instagram you might have seen some pictures already.

It was a lot of fun and I think it was a great first edition. I can’t wait till next year, but let’s talk about this year’s edition first, shall we?

Getting ready!

My mom and I got up early and with the clock going forward an hour, it felt even earlier! Of course I dressed up as a Hufflepuff, my mom wore my panda clip on ears haha. We met up with my cousin at the station and then we were on our way to DCC!

On the bus!

As soon as we got off the train we were almost immediately blown away. The weather wasn’t that great, but luckily we’d be inside all day long. I was a bit disappointed to not find a gigantic group of cosplayers marching towards the hall, but I suppose most people were either already inside (as we arrived about half an hour after opening hours) or would change inside.

Once we were inside we saw the first Stormtrooper though!

My cousin and mom with said Stormtrooper

When we entered the hall we were immediately greeted by the Bat Mobile and the Ecto 1 from Ghostbusters. Stepping inside the hall immediately felt like entering another world haha.

Behind the Ghostbusters stand there was some horror circus or something, but we weren’t really interested in that. I’m not a big fan of clowns, and if it’s a horror circus… Well, I really don’t want to run into a crazy clown with a saw or something! *shudders*

My cousin did find her ideal man though:

Only downside is that I had accidentally avada kedavra’d him- oops!

Inside the first hall there were famous cars (like the before mentioned ones, but also the DeLorean from Back to the Future. Luigi from Cars was supposed to be there, but we couldn’t find him anywhere so it was probably cancelled), a game section (where was my Pokémon though? Maybe I missed it, as it was really busy!), some stands that sold comics, you could get a tattoo, the autograph and photo section and the stand from my favourite bookstore, the American Book Center.

I loved how their stand was in the same style as their store. See, what’s so amazing about their interior is that there’s a tree in the middle of the store. Having a tree at DCC and all the cute little trunks too sit at was just plain awesome.

The next hall is were most of the stands were. It was incredibly busy, but thankfully the paths were really wide so there was enough room! I had a mission to find an Alice Pop!Vinyl, but sadly she was sold out everywhere on Saturday! I did get some others that I love though!

I’ve been to cons before, but those were either anime based or Japan based, so going to a con where I can buy both for example Harry Potter and Doctor Who stuff and cute alpaca’s (I FINALLY GOT ONE) = perfection.

Is anyone else reminded of Chandler’s ‘gum would be pefection’?

Moving on. There were a lot of diverse stands (though there were quite a few that only sold comics, but hey, it is comic con, even though it’s not all about comics anymore). You couldn’t only buy stuff (though there was a lot, and there had been even more the previous day we had been told!), you could also be drawn as a caricature or as a manga character, get your nails done or have a professional makeup artist make you look like you’re injured (maybe he did other things too but I only saw the injuries).

Ever since I found out about DCC last summer I started saving money so that I could buy a lot, and I sure am happy with my purchases!

  • I’ve wanted an alpaca for years, but whenever I found a website that sold them they were already sold out! So when we spotted someone carrying one around I started my hunt haha! It’s so adorable I can’t stop cuddlying with it.

  • I also found alpaca earmuffs! The cold weather is almost over, but who cares?! The cold weather will return and I will wear them (until it’s so cold I’ll need a hat instead)
  • I’ve now got a full Pokémon team (I already had Pikachu, Psyduck, Piplup and Oshawott) with Bulbasaur and Mudkip!

  • How could I resist that cute Winnie the Pooh?? I already own a Winnie the Pooh but one can never have too many Winnies
  • These cute Rilakkuma and Little Twin Stars contact cases are much cuter than the plain ones from the optician I owned!
  • I’m already wearing my new Harry Potter shirt and loving it!
  • I got the wallet in a goodie bag (along with some stickers and a doll that I wasn’t really interested in so I gave it away) that I got for free at the stand where I bought the alpaca earmuffs, the contact cases, the tights and Mudkip. I don’t know if everyone was allowed to pick out a goodie bag for free or only if you spend a certain ammount, but I thought it was a nice gesture! Besides, it’s Kiiroitori!

And here are my Pop! Vinyls! Even though I was unable to find Alice, I really love the ones I did get my hands on! ♥

While looking around we found the TARDIS and of course I had to take a picture with it!

There were Q&A’s all day long at the podium. We only attended Giancarlo Esposito’s (I’m still impressed they managed to get such a big star for a first edition!) as my cousin and I are big fans of Once Upon a Time, but since they mostly talked about Breaking Bad we decided to not listen to the entire thing. We had no idea what they were talking about after all, haha! He did shortly talk about being Regina’s right hand and how he loved playing two characters on the show. He also briefly talked about The Scorch Trials!!

I tried to take a picture of him, but the lightning wasn’t in my favor as he looks like a ghost. I won’t be sharing my picture with you guys as you can’t even recognize him haha!

There was also a cosplay competition at the stage, but we didn’t watch. There were a lot of great cosplayers though! I took pictures with some of them (I was often too shy to ask or they were already gone!).
I ran into a few fellow Potterheads, which was awesome of course! Two of them were Hufflepuffs too! Sadly I didn’t take pictures with them, but I did fist bump with one of them.

Now on to some more pictures!

And that was our day at Dutch Comic Con! Like I said before, I had so much fun! There was a great atmosphere, both the buyers and all the cosplayers were friendly and nice to chat with. there was plenty to do and to buy… I just can’t wait for next year!

Did any of you go? Did you have fun? Or if you ever went to a different con tell me about it! :D And do any of you cosplay? (I’m starting to sound very nosy haha)
