Best Books of 2016

This year I read 147 books. That sounds like a lot, but a lot of those books are manga and comic books. Not that I don’t count those, but those are really quick reads (at least for me), otherwise I never would’ve been able to read this much haha. But what were my favourites this year? In no order, except for the first one:

Timekeeper by Tara Sim

Hands down my favourite book of the year. I loved it to pieces and I can’t wait for the sequel. I loved the characters, the worldbuilding, the writing, the relationships (including the romance of course), the mystery… Just everything. Read my review and listen to my playlist here.

The Ask and the Answer/Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness

If I had to choose which one of these two is better, I’d probably go with The Ask and the Answer. Don’t ask me for any arguments, because I read these two at the start of the year and until I went through Goodreads I didn’t even remember that I read them this year. It feels like ages ago.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Same with Simon. Did I seriously read this only this year?? This book was so cute and Simon is so relatable. It didn’t blow me away, but I might reread it next year and we’ll see. Cinder didn’t blow me away at first either and now it’s one of my favourite books. Read my review here.

Stars Above by Marissa Meyer

This reminds me that I need to get my hands on Heartless. Also Wires and Nerves is almost out!! But I should talk about this book instead. If you’re a fan of The Lunar Chronicles and haven’t read this one yet, I really recommend it. I felt like I got to know the characters a little bit better (even though I think the main books already do a superb job at that) and it was just a lot of fun, especially the last story. Read my review here.

The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

This book was just so much fun and hilarious. I doubt there will ever be a year where there won’t be a Riordan book on my best of list, unless he didn’t publish anything. I already loved Apollo, but Uncle Rick gave him character development and actually made him likeable (I mean, I loved him before but if I were to know him in real life I’d despise him haha). Read my review here.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

I finally read the entire series this year and I really get what the hype is all about! I don’t know which book would be my favourite and I haven’t reviewed any of them either woops.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

I have this edition but I'm too lazy to take a picture of it woops

I have this edition but I’m too lazy to take a picture of it woops

This one was definitely a surprise! I started reading it and was quite bored, but at some point the pace picked up and I loved it so much. It was so sweet yet heartbreaking. It also felt very real and I loved seeing Anne grow up. I really need to read the rest of the series.

One by Sarah Crossan

I’ve been meaning to review this one but I haven’t gotten to it yet. This one is written entirely through poems and while I didn’t know what to expect at first, it worked so well. It made me feel so much closer to the protagonists and so much more emotional.

We Awaken by Calista Lynne

I may have only given this book 3.5 stars, but I loved it a lot. It’s still on my mind even now after having finished it weeks ago. I just love the fact that both the protagonist and her love interest are ace and how that’s explored and how beautiful their relationship is. Read my review here.

I meant to review this manga this Summer when I read it, but I never got to it. I read it in one sitting (okay there aren’t that many chapters but still) and I can’t even explain why I loved it so much. It just hit me real hard and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Ms. Marvel

I don’t care whether you like superheroes or not okay? Read Ms. Marvel. Okay words are not working with me. I just don’t know where to start. Okay hopefully I’ll do better once I try to properly review this which I am planning on doing. JUST READ IT.

READ LUMBERJANES TOO (okay you should read everything on this list but). It has a super diverse cast (two!! trans characters!!!!), it’s all about friendship (though there’s an adorable same-sex relationship too), it’s very strange and magical, it’s hilarious, the characters are very lovable and just READ IT.

What are the best books YOU read this year? Let me know in the comments!

Bookish Pop! Funkos I Need In My Life

I don’t know how it happened, but recently I suddenly envisioned Cath from Fangirl as a Pop! Funko and it was the cutest thing. I’d draw it but I’m lazy and it’d take up waaaay to much time (and I don’t have that much time). Inspired by this ‘vision’ though, I decided to list some bookish Pop! Funkos I need in my life that I will probably never get, unless they’re turned into a popular movie/tv show (which would be awesome without the Funkos of course).

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Source: Noelle Stevenson

Starting with the book that inspired this post, a Cath Pop! Funko would be adorable. Can you imagine little Cath, wearing her Carry On Simon T-shirt and cardigan, a copy of Simon Snow in her hand? ‘Cause I can.

In addition Levi and Reagan would be adorable too, and while I can’t really picture Wren (maybe a reread is due – not that I need an excuse to reread Fangirl) I know she’d be cute as a Pop! Funko

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Source: Paper Pie

And obviously I need Snowbaz as Pop! Funkos as well. I need them because of reasons. And of course I need Penelope and Agatha to finish the squad (I know almost everyone hates Agatha but I really don’t. Also her Pop! Funko needs her dog Lucy).

Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus

Source: Viria

Duh. I need my favourite demigods to stand in front of my Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus books. Preferably with cute objects that fit them. Percy with blue pizza in his hand (or other food, as long as it’s blue) and Riptide in the other; Annabeth with her dagger and laptop/a book; Grover I dunno holding a flower? He’d be cute either way; Jason wearing his dorky glasses; Leo with his tool belt and a wrench or other tool in his hand (maybe a flame in his other or is that too much to ask?); Piper with her dagger; Hazel with gems; Nico with a Happy Meal; Frank half transformed in preferably a cute animal like a panda (Frank is like a panda or a teddy bear, don’t fight me on this); Reyna just looking badass, maybe riding her Pegasus Scipio; Rachel holding a paintbrush and the infamous blue hairbrush; and of course Tyson and Ella and… I could go on because I want all the characters (well except Smelly Gabe). BUT HOW AWESOME WOULD THESE BE.

The Lunar Chronicles

Source: Candy8496

I need the Rampion Crew as Pop! Funko guys (including Iko of course. It was really hard to find good fan art of the entire crew, and for some reason I couldn’t find any with Iko in it. Is it too greedy to ask for android Iko and escort-droid Iko). I need them. Like air (okay not like air or I would’ve died already but you get what I mean). They would make such great, distinctive and adorable Pop! Funkos and I want to cry because unless the books are adapted for film/tv (preferably the latter) they will never exist and I need them. Can we start a petition for bookish Pop! Funkos so that they know they’re in demand and will sell well please. Oh and since they made a Hogwarts Express and the couch from Friends (or they’re making it, I don’t know if it’s out yet) can we get the Rampion itself too.

Shadowhunters has the most chance of getting their own Pop! Funkos because of the tv show. If it does well and becomes more popular, who knows? Obviously the Pops will look like the actors and I’m 100% down for that. THEY’LL BE EVEN MORE ADORABLE. How will they capture Matthew Dadario’s beauty in Pop! Funko form though. Oh and they better not leave out Luke (he’s a main character thank you), Raphael and Lydia.

There are probably a lot more bookish Pop! Funkos that I want (including the new and already existing Harry Potter Pop! Funkos duh), but these were the first ones that came to mind and that I really want. What bookish Pop! Funkos do you need in your life? Let me know in the comments!

The Monthly Hufflepuff: November

THIS IS THE LAST MONTHLY WRAP UP OF 2015 HOW DID THIS EVEN HAPPEN. I feel like I start all these wrap ups with a freak-out about how fast time flies lately, but can you blame me. We’re almost in 2016. How.

This month I only read two books, but I’m completely okay with that. I would’ve read more if Winter hadn’t put me in such a mayor reading slump!

I don’t have a picture this time because:

  1. I was too tired to blog for the majority of the day
  2. Now it’s too dark to take a proper picture!
  • Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan ★★★★ (review will be published soon; I just need to take a picture but I keep forgetting to take one until it’s once again too dark)
  • Winter by Marissa Meyer ★★★★★

  • While it was still November, I read (98/100) books for my Goodreads Challenge (I completed it yesterday)
  • I’m still reading The Silkworm for my ‘Finish These Series’ challenge
  • Speaking of which, I’m really not sure I even want to finish all the series on that list anymore!
  • I’ve read (6/10) books for the Fairytale Retelling Challenge
  • Thanks to NaNoWriMo I finished translating my wip, which was also one of my goals!

what I posted-2

Here are some posted I enjoyed writing and you guys enjoyed reading!

Remember The Book Awards? I really want to know if you guys are still interested in the last round. I know I haven’t really done much with it the last few months (I was busy, I forgot and kind of lost motivation), but if you guys really want me to do it, I’ll make a post in which you guys can vote for the nominees! The winners would be announced in January (that sentence sounds weird, but it could be because I’m exhausted).

Anyway, this month I hope to blog a lot, but also write and read. I will soon have Happy Home Designer in my grabby hands, so I’m afraid I’ll be spending a lot of time designing homes for cute animals.

Guys, it really won’t surprise me if this is how I’m going to spend my holidays. If I disappear from the blogosphere, you’ll know why.

But if I don’t disappear (which I really hope) I’ll be doing posts in which I’ll look back on 2015 and forwards to 2016. I might do some Christmassy posts, but I’m not sure about that yet. There will be reviews (I’ve already written some, they just need pictures woops) and probably tags since I’ve still got a long list with tags to do (I HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN ANY OF YOU WONDERFUL BLOGGERS WHO TAGGED ME. I PROMISE) and a bunch of other fun posts planned (but not written yet so it won’t surprise me if they won’t go up until May or something).

How was your month? What was your favourite book of the month? Mine was obviously Winter (it is tied with Made You Up as my favourite book of 2015).

Review: Winter by Marissa Meyer

Genre: Young adult | sci-fi | fairytale retelling
Series: The Lunar Chronicles #4
Goodreads rating: 4.60
My rating: ★★★★★

IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE FIRST THREE BOOKS THEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? No, that came out wrong. If you haven’t read the first three books yet, and you still want to, and you don’t want to be spoiled at all, I advice you to stop reading NOW!

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

How do I even start this review? I’m very tempted to write this review in a list, since I have a feeling this will be a mess otherwise…

Let me start by saying that Winter was definitely worth the wait and a perfect conclusion to the series. Everything feels wrapped up, no questions are left unanswered, no plot holes, just a perfect ending (but is it a happy one or not? FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF HAHAHA *evil laugh*)

But let’s get down to business shall we? (kudos if you sang that) On Saturday I already wrote a post about my feels in gifs (WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD) so if you read that, you already know that I loved Winter a lot and that the fangirl levels were (still are actually) high.

I’m going to start with discussing the titular character and her love interest Jacin. If you’ve read my gif post, you may have noticed the lack of these two. Did I not love them? I loved Winter, she’s adorable, fun(ny), complex, interesting, kindhearted and while she’s definitely based on Snow White, she’s so much better than the original or the Disney version. My post just focused more on the others, because I’m more attached to them and they gave me a lot more feels since I’ve known them longer. Jacin though… I don’t know how I feel about Jacin. I do sort of like him, and he and Winter are cute together, but as a character? Meh. I’m not really a fan. I prefer Kai, Thorne and Wolf (especially the first two. Someone give them to me for my birthday).

While we’re still talking about Winter (the character, not the book. We’ll be talking about the book in the entire post), I loved the nods to the original fairytale. They were very subtle, but obvious if you’re familiar with the fairytale. I think my favourite was when Winter was cleaning up… somewhere (trying not to spoil is hard haha). I also loved how easy it is to forget that you’re reading a Snow White retelling (at least it was to me!). I was so immersed in everything else, that I forgot that certain things were going to happen (wow, can I get any more vague?).

Just like with Scarlet and Cress, I just couldn’t stop reading. I had to put it down, since I had homework to do. Plus I forced myself to, since I didn’t want it to be over! (I felt so empty once I had finished it haha. Still am in a massive reading slump as I’m writing this. With the emphasis on ‘as I’m writing this’. I hope to be out of it once this is published). There was so much going on, it felt like every chapter ended on a cliffhanger (maybe that was the case, I don’t exactly remember as there were many chapters) and I was just on the edge of my seat the entire time (figuratively. In reality I was lying on my ass). Even though I’m not really a fan of Jacin, all the povs were fun and interesting to read about (though I might have thought differently if Jacin had had more chapters, since he didn’t have that many). I just love that we get to read about EVERYTHING that’s going on. We see different sides, so we have the entire picture.

The other characters are amazing as always, so are the relationships and the dialogues between them. Levana got even crazier (is that even possible?). Reading about the resistance and the war against Levana gave me such a rush. Winter is just such an emotional rollercoaster, especially if you loved the first three books and are very emotionally involved in this series and attached to these characters. There’s so much I want to talk about, but

Have you read Winter yet? What did you think of it? I think Winter is one of my favourite series conclusions. I was so afraid that the ending would disappoint and ruin the entire series, BUT IT DIDN’T. So if you share those fears, don’t worry! Pick it up and start devouring this beauty.

The Weekly Hufflepuff #13

One week of November left which means… 2015 is almost over. HOW. Though it’s scary it’s also really exciting. It’s almost Sinterklaas (Dutch holiday), winter break (which I already need woops), Christmas, New Years, SHADOWHUNTERS, so many new books, tv shows starting again (TEEN WOLF 5B AND THE FOSTERS 3B), Ace Attorney anime and a new game, Dutch Comic Con and YalFestNL and gosh so many more things! But I’ll talk about the future in another post, let’s talk about the past!

Last week I sort of started Winter. I had a lot to do that day so I didn’t really read much. On Monday and Tuesday I was home late and too tired to read, but once I picked it up again on Wednesday I couldn’t stop (I did though. I had to write my introduction post for The Blogger Positivity Campaign and do some homework). I spend Thursday reading as well (though once again I managed to stop so I could do some homework haha) and then I finished it on Friday. UM WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO READ NOW (I don’t know, maybe finish The Silkworm which you started a few weeks ago but you keep reading other books instead?)

So… I think I wrote a thousand words this week? Oh well, I was too tired and too obsessed with Winter to write haha. I’m just happy I wrote at all. I’ll write more about my NaNo experience in a future post (probably my monthly wrap up). I’m going to try to write a bit this week, but if I don’t, I’m okay with that!

Remember that pie/cake/thing I was going to make last Sunday? Yeah, we completely failed. It had to rise in the refrigerator, but it didn’t. It was disgusting

There’s really not much to tell since I spent most of my free time reading Winter

OH OH. ONCE UPON A TIME YOU GUYS. OH MY GOD. I won’t go into details since I don’t want to spoil anyone, but WOW. Did not see that coming. I haven’t watched The Bear King yet, since I’m not really a fan of Merida’s portrayal and arc in OUaT, though I do love Mulan and Ruby (and the moment this episode was announced I started shipping them and from what I’ve seen on Tumblr they’re are a lot of shipworthy moments in this episode? It’s the only thing that motivates me to watch the episode haha)

I bought and ate the most delicious muffin at school. It was a chocolate muffin, with nutella on the inside and white chocolate sprinkles on top of it. HEAVEN IN MY MOUTH

Winter: My Feels in Gifs

Last year when I had finished Blood of Olympus I made a post about my feels in gifs. I decided to do it again the day after I finished Winter BECAUSE IT’S OVER AND I’M NOT OKAY.

When I bought the book

Me at Levana during the entire book

When I just got too emotional because of these characters (which was pretty much the entire book ahum)

When shit was going down

All the subtle nods to the original Snow White fairy tale

The jooookes (especially Thorne’s)

Cinder slaying throughout the entire book (for example: ”You could bow before me as your true queen.”)

Every time things went right for our crew and wrong for Levana (especially when all the sectors started to revolt and when Cinder’s second video played)

Kai asking Thorne about Cress

Thorne looking at Cress all the time

Just me throughout the entire book unless things were going terribly wrong (I PROMISE THIS IS THE LAST TIME I’LL USE THIS GIF)

When Kai had to kiss Levana

When Levana was going all ‘Selene why you doing this to me’ and ‘I’m a nice person what did I do to deserve this’

When Levana ‘surrendered’

I swear I’m mostly upset with myself FOR FALLING FOR IT. I ACTUALLY SMILED AND THOUGHT AWW (I mean I still hated her guts)

When Wolf thought Scarlet wouldn’t want him anymore

Thorne almost dying

Cress almost dying

Cinder almost dying

Everyone getting separated and then the reunions and just

‘And they all lived happily ever after’

Cinder’s coronation and everyone being happy and just eating cake and of course Cinder dropped cake on her gorgeous dress

Everyone’s happy endings and just dsfjgfdg

Don’t get me wrong it was cute but

I still love you though Kai

The title of this post is so calm: Winter: My Feels in Gifs and then you open the actual post and it’s just a mess and full with caps lock and fangirling haha

I assume that if you’re reading this either a) you’ve read Winter (TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS. LET’S FANGIRL/BOY TOGETHER) b) you don’t care about spoilers (which of course doesn’t mean we can’t fangirl!) or c) you have no interest in the series and thus decided to read this post anyway (which is totally okay BUT YOU REALLY DO NEED TO READ THIS SERIES TRUST ME) I feel like I’ve forgot to mention SO MANY THINGS that I wanted to mention (if it really is a lot I might do a part 2 haha)

The Weekly Hufflepuff #12

This week was crazy: the new term started, NaNo wasn’t going well, wasn’t going well, and then Friday happened (I don’t think I have to elaborate on that). But let’s talk about books first, because books make us (usually) happy.

  • I finished Magnus Chase. I really enjoyed it, but I’ll talk more about it in my review (which I hope to write soon)
  • I STARTED WINTER. I’m not that far yet (at all), but so far so good. I DON’T WANT IT TO END THOUGH

Last week I wrote 15.507 words, this week… 4195. It isn’t that bad, but compared to last week, and how motivated I was… Well, I’m disappointed. Most of those words were written on Tuesday, so I could’ve written so much more if I had written that same amount every day. Except Tuesday was the only day I felt really motivated.

I don’t really know what happened on Monday, but suddenly something switched inside of me and I didn’t feel okay. At all. Things went a bit better on Tuesday (thus the word count), but then while writing, the switch turned again, and it didn’t turn off or however I’m supposed to describe it, until Thursday. I just felt empty and depressed (don’t worry though, I’m really fine now). I didn’t even go to school on Thursday (not wanting to go to school for reasons like that hasn’t happened in a while now, especially not at this school as I’m actually having fun). Anyway, I wasn’t sure if I was going to tell you guys this, but then I thought: ‘why the hell not?’ There’s nothing to be ashamed about.

So that’s why I didn’t write as much as I liked, but I’ll try to find a snippet to share with you guys like last week.

I hope that if you’re participating in NaNo that you’re doing better than I am!

The new term started this week, and so far it really does seem to be less busy than last term. I hope it stays that way haha. ALSO. While I don’t have every Wednesday off anymore (it’s every other week now), we do have Thursdays off (not officially, Thursday’s class has been moved to Tuesday) which obviously I’m really happy with. We have to do quite a bit of reading every week for Friday, so now I can do that on Thursday!

Speaking of the new term, it also means new teachers. I haven’t met all of them yet, but I really like the teacher for ‘news portal’ (where we make our own news website) and ‘news item’ (where we learn how to write news items). She’s really funny (dry humour plus sarcasm) and relaxed

Like I said, I wasn’t doing so well mentally, but really: don’t worry! I’m fine now

To make me feel better my mom took me shopping this week, so naturally that meant a trip to the bookstore. WINTER HELL YESSSSS. I also got Shadow and Bone since I’ve wanted to read that for years, but for some reason never did. We also went to Popcult, which is well on it’s way to become a Dutch Hot Topic. I really want to write a Blogsterdam post about it this month! We ended the day at Subway, where I had a delicious chicken teriyaki sandwich *almost literally drools at the memory*

Yesterday was a lot of fun: one of my
friends from secondary school came
over. We talked a lot (we hadn’t seen each other in weeks, and some things just can’t be talkedabout through What’s App) and we are finally caught up on Pretty Little Liars. GUYS WHY WERE PEOPLE SO DISAPPOINTED ABOUT THE 6A FINALE?! I LOVED IT. The end was a bit abrupt, BUT OH MY GOD THAT PLOT TWIST.

LOOOOOOOOK *eternal flailing*

Today I will bake a pie/cake/thing. My mom thinks I might like this kind of pie/cake, so we’ll see. I like baking though, so whether I like the taste of it or not doesn’t matter. I used to bake apple pie a lot as a kid, but I never ate it haha.

what I posted-2

And that was this week. I’m glad mine ended with a fun night with my friend, but I know a lot of people are hurting right now, not just in Paris. Everyone who’s lost someone or has gone through one of the horrible events of Friday is in my thoughts. I hope that all of you reading this had a good week ❤

Review: Cress by Marissa Meyer

Genre: YA, fantasy, sci-fi, fairytale retelling
Series: The Lunar Chronicles #3
Goodreads rating: 4.49
My rating: ★★★★★

In this third book in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl imprisoned on a satellite since childhood who’s only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has.

I have to be honest here. I kind of forgot I hadn’t written a review yet and now I’m mad at myself as my memory is already foggy. Woops.

In the third book of The Lunar Chronicles we meet a not completely new character: Cress, who is based on Rapunzel. Can we take this moment to applaud Marissa Meyer for the way she intertwined the fairytale of Rapunzel into The Lunar Chronicles? It’s brilliant and my favourite so far. Cress’ relationship with Thorne is adorable and I ship it. Cress herself is adorable as well and I can’t wait to see more of her. I wish she had joined the crew earlier so she would have had more screen time (page time?).

Lots of stuff happens in this book. Lots of spoily stuff that I won’t spoil for you.

This was me throughout most of the book. ‘CAUSE GUYS IT’S GOING DOWN. I’M YELLING TIMBER CINDER.

Cress is once again full of action, humor, great relationships (platonic and romantic), tears and cuteness. I barely knew anything going into this book, and I think you should too if you haven’t read it yet.

Cress is a rollercoaster of emotions and I need Winter now. I feel so bad for all of you who read this book a long time ago. You poor things how did you survive?! Share your survival tips with me haha.

Have you read it yet? What did you think of Cress? Let me know in the comments!

Review: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Genre: Fairytale retelling // Sci-fi
Category: YA
Series: The Lunar Chronicles #2
Goodreads rating: 4.31
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Summary (2020)

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison–even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner .

Review (2020)

I loved Scarlet so much more than Cinder. I’m officially in love with the series now. At times Cinder was a bit predictable, because I’m so familiar with the fairytale. Scarlet wasn’t predictable at all, which made it way more enjoyable. The pace felt faster too, which led me to reading it faster than Cinder.

Can we get an applause for a book with different POVs which are all interesting? I mean, that doesn’t happen often. I didn’t mind switching between POVs, not even once. Nor did I ever think: ah no, not them again! Seriously, I applaud Marissa Meyer.

There are three new major characters in Scarlet: Scarlet herself, Wolf and Thorne. Scarlet is a great heroine, but Thorne kind of stole her thunder. He just reminded me of my favourite type of anime character. Full of himself, funny and incredibly lovable.

The friendship that develops between Thorne and Cinder just gave me life. Did I miss her interaction with Kai? Yes, but honestly I love friendship more than romantic ships. I think this is also because friendship is quite underrated! I just want more bromance in my books.

Back to Scarlet and Wolf though. I loved Scarlet: she was witty, sarcastic, brave and loved her grandmother more than anything. Wolf too was an interesting character, but I won’t go into any details as I don’t want to spoil anything. Did the romance go a bit too fast? Yes, but Scarlet herself acknowledged that, so I couldn’t be too annoyed. In the end they’re a really cute couple (also Wolf is one of the greatest dorks who is amazed by tomatoes).

I personally found the plot more interesting than Cinder‘s (not saying that I didn’t find Cinder‘s plot interesting! Not at all), but honestly, I can’t say too much about it or I’m afraid I’ll spoil it. Just know that it’s true what they say about this series: it gets better with every book. Now excuse me while I go cry about the fact that they didn’t have Cress at my bookstore when I bought Scarlet and I’ll have to wait until I have time to visit the bookstore again (which wil be after my exams).

Note from Michelle from 2020: once I reread Cinder I actually loved it just as much as Scarlet!
