What Do You Mean We’re Halfway Through 2017

It’s time to freak out again over the fact that time flies by so fast and what better way to do that than to freak out over books? We’re already past the halfway point, but oh well! Thank you Shouni for tagging me  for the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag! If you haven’t yet, go check out her blog.

1. BEST BOOKS YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2017?

I’m lazy and don’t have a picture of The Hate U Give #rip

2. BEST SEQUEL OF 2017 SO FAR

3. NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET, BUT YOU WANT TO

Ummm so many?? CAN 2017 EITHER STOP PUBLISHING SO MANY AMAZING BOOKS OR GIVE THEM ALL TO ME FOR FREE THANKS

To name a few: The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, Not Your Sidekick, Want, The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, Heroine Worship and so many others it’s not funny

4. MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE OF THE SECOND HALF OF 2017?

Though I’m really excited for the third Magnus Chase book!

5. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

It’s Not Like It’s a Secret. I have SUCH mixed feelings towards this book, but I can’t say I loved it and I’m definitely disappointed. It had a lot of potential but alas. Read my review here

6. BIGGEST SURPRISE

I’m surprised that I didn’t enjoy The Dark Prophecy as much as I thought I would. I absolutely loved The Hidden Oracle, and while I did enjoy the The Dark Prophecy, I didn’t love it which was definitely a surprise. You can read my review here.

good surprise was Heroine Complex. While I was really excited when I picked it up and had high expectations, I wasn’t sure if I’d actually love it once I started. Thankfully my initial expectations and excitement were met and I absolutely loved it. I can’t wait to read the sequel. You can read my review here.

7. FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR (DEBUT OR AUTHOR TO YOU)

I’d definitely read anything Jen Wilde and Angie Thomas write. I also fell in love with Jenny Han’s writing, though I’m not sure if I’d actually pick up everything she’s written, since The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy just doesn’t appeal to me

8. NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

I don’t think I really have one? Unless it counts that I now love Gilbert Blythe even more than I did last year when I first read Anne of Green Gables. I did love a lot of the new characters I encountered, just wouldn’t call anyone of them a crush I think.

9. NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER

Alex Fierro from Magnus Chase and Taylor from Queens of Geek. While there are many new favourites, I’m going to limit myself to these two.

10. BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

The Hate U Give

11. A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and Ps. I Still Love You. WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO READ THIS

12. FAVORITE BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION YOU’VE SEEN THIS YEAR

Uh do comics count? Cause in that case like Shouni I’ll choose Wonder Woman as well. I don’t recall having seen a book adaptation this year? But it’s okay cause I’ll gladly choose Wonder Woman. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for?? IT’S AMAZING*

* I started writing this post weeks ago so by now I assume you’ve all seen it already if not let me drag you to the cinema right now

13. FAVORITE REVIEW YOU’VE WRITTEN THIS YEAR?

My review for Queens of Geek! I absolutely loved writing it

14. MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT OR RECEIVED THIS YEAR?

The Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone Hufflepuff edition that I got for my birthday it’s so beautiful omg. Does anyone know if they’ll re-release the other books in the House editions as well?

15. WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR?

Since this is a pretty popular tag this time of the year, I won’t be tagging anyone in specific. If you want to do this tag, consider yourself tagged!

What’s your favourite book of the year? And the prettiest one you got? Let me know in the comments!

Characters I Would Fight You For

Look, I’m not a violent person. I literally can’t hurt a fly. I’ll open a window and wave my arms around the fly towards the window hoping it will fly out the window. But if you talk bad about these characters there’s a chance I’ll fight you. At least mentally

Harry Potter

Maybe you’re thinking: Michelle, who hates Harry frickin’ Potter?? Well lots of people apparently! A while back I was looking for annoying YA characters for a tag (my mind was going blank so I needed inspiration) and I found Harry on pretty much every list?? And of course the reason he was on there was because of his behaviour in Order of the Phoenix.

HE. HAS. PTSD. AND. IS. AN. ABUSE. VICTIM

Yes, he shouldn’t blow up at people and having PTSD isn’t an excuse for it, but it is a reason. He’s 15 years old, having dealt with a lot of traumatic crap already and now he’s finally blowing up. Order of the Phoenix Harry shows us how human Harry is and that watching Cedric die, facing Voldemort once again and this time with his full powers restored, being surrounded by Death Eaters, seeing his dead parents come out of Voldemorts wand… That was all just too much for him and he can’t handle it anymore.

Another complaint is that Harry won’t go to Dumbledore about Umbridge because he doesn’t want to bother him. He grew up in an abusive household, where he wasn’t even allowed to ask questions, let alone ask for help or go to the Dursley’s with his problems. Not to mention he already felt like a bother to Dumbledore since he was avoiding him.

I swear I will fight you for my son Harry Potter

Ron Weasley

I know Ron has flaws, but let’s not forget that he’s incredibly loyal to his friends? And he won’t take any crap from pure-blood supremacists? His wand was broken and he still tried to hex Malfoy, even though he knew it could backfire badly. He stood on a frickin’ broken leg and used himself as a shield to protect Harry from a supposed mass-murderer who was supposed to be an expert at the Dark Arts. Yes, he lets his jealousy get to him sometimes, but he’s only human. He wrote his mom to make sure Harry would get Christmas presents. He broke Harry out and invited him to his home. That boy would do anything for his friends.

Is this Ron protecting Harry from Sirius or me protecting Ron from the haters

Heroes of Olympus characters that aren’t Percy and Annabeth (and Leo before Blood of Olympus came out)

Especially on Tumblr I saw a lot of hatred towards these characters, for the most ridiculous reasons. I’ve already talked about Piper in my Book Aesthetics Tag, so I won’t repeat myself. But why would you hate on the cinnamon rolls that are Hazel and Frank?? That’s an actual question. If you hate/dislike them, could you please tell me why?

People hate on Jason because he’s ‘a boring version of Percy’. I’m pretty sure Riordan meant for Percy and Jason to be pretty similar, except they were each other Greek and Roman versions and thus perfect to take each other’s place and bring the two camps together. Personally I love my dorky son Jason who tried to eat a stapler.

Leo was really loved, until the events of Blood of Olympus. I get why people were angry, but the hatred I saw was a bit too much back then. He was the fandoms golden child before Blood of Olympus though, and the other four took all the heat.

Of course you don’t have to like all these characters! Everyone has different opinions but personally I find hatred a bit much? They’re not Octavian

Agatha Wellbelove

Okay I know I’ve already talked about her in my Book Aesthetics Tag as well, but like Piper I didn’t want to leave her out. I get not liking her or not being interested in her, but hatred? She isn’t The Mage (yes I’m repeating myself but,,) I mean the girl just wanted to live a quiet life with a cute dog and realised she deserved better than being the hero’s reward at the end of the quest.

If you do hate these characters, that’s fine! I won’t actually fight you (really hope I didn’t scare you lmao) I’ll just start screaming on the inside  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Which characters would you fight someone for? If you do dislike/hate these characters, why? (seriously don’t worry I won’t fight you) Let me know in the comments!

The Book Aesthetics Tag

After doing the Blogger Aesthetics Tag, I wondered if there was a tag in which you had to make book related aesthetics. I couldn’t find one (if there is let me know!) so naturally I made on myself

Rules

💛 Thank whoever nominated you (maybe you’re bitter that you have ANOTHER tag to do on top of the billions you already need to do (#relatable), still though. Someone thought of you. Be thankful. At least pretend to be
💛 Credit the creator of this tag (I feel so… weird, asking for credits?
💛 There’s no limit of how many aesthetics you can make for a question, but think of your poor readers. Even me, an aesthetics hoe, might get tired after 50 aesthetics (I doubt anyone would make/share that many for this tag I just like to exaggerate \_(ツ)_/¯
💛 Make your OWN aesthetics, please don’t steal them from someone else. Also what’s the fun in that?

Favourite book of the year

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde

I’ve read more books that I loved, but so far none have been able to surpass these two. They both have important messages, are well-written and have great characters. I haven’t gotten around to reviewing The Hate U Give Yet (I keep putting it off because I feel like everything has been said already?) but you can read my review for Queens of Geek here.

Character you relate to a lot

Taylor from Queens of Geek

There are more characters I relate to, but boy did I relate a lot to Taylor (Charlie as well, but less so). Her anxiety was so well written I could cry. If you want to know more about why I related so much to Taylor (wow this sounds like clickbait but in reality I’m just lazy and don’t want to repeat myself promise) read my review.

A character you look up to

Charlie from Queens of Geek

Hermione Granger

A lot of us look up to Hermione (I also relate to her a lot, but I wanted to give my girl Taylor some love), so I don’t think I need to explain why I look up to her. I also wanted to include Charlie though, cause though I looked up to Taylor as well I didn’t want to repeat myself (the things she did despite her anxiety were incredibly inspiring). I absolutely loved Charlie and how she’s able to express herself, be herself and speak her mind like that is really something to look up to. Not to mention what an incredible friend she is. She may not have anxiety herself, but she gets Taylor so well and she’s always there for her. We should all aspire to be a friend like Charlie.

As much as I love Queens of Geek I promise I’m done talking about it now (in this post anyway) lmao.

An underrated gem

Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn

I absolutely loved Heroine Complex. It was such a fun read and I can’t wait to read the sequel. Basically: Asian female superheroes, fun superhero comic book vibes, girls supporting girls, sisters and a healthy romance. What more could you want? Review hopefully coming this week!

A character that deserves more love

Piper McLean from Heroes of Olympus

Agatha Wellbelove from Carry On

The hatred for Piper may have already passed, but a while back (I think around the time Blood of Olympus was published?) I came across so much hatred for Piper. And for ridiculous reasons! Because she thinks Jason is better than Percy?? Yeah the girl’s in love of course she’s going to think that, and she’s entitled to that opinion? I don’t remember the other reasons, but none of them were sounded. I honestly don’t get it. I love Piper with my entire heart. Fell in love with her the moment she appeared. She’s a daughter of Aphrodite, who kicks ass, uses words to get out of sticky situations (Charm speak), is an amazing and supportive friend, and so much more?? Fight me haters.

Agatha is disliked and hated on a lot. Especially when Carry On was first published a lot of reviews mentioned that they didn’t like her. Meanwhile I love my daughter. I love that she chose herself, realised that she never really loved Simon, didn’t want to be the prize for the hero at the end of the quest, just kidnapped a dog (or should I say… dognapped *finger guns*) and went to L.A. to live there happily ever after. Basically I adore Agatha and would fight for her too

An underrated OTP

Danny and Colton from Timekeeper

Timekeeper by Tara Sim did get a bit of buzz back when it was released last year, but I feel that it’s really underrated. Which is a shame because it’s amazing? It was my favourite book of 2016 (read my review here) and Danny and Colton played a huge part in that, since their romance is a huge part of the plot. They’re adorable. The relationship is pure and emotional and just so damn healthy. Apparently I declared it my favourite romance of 2016 and I still stand by that.

I TAG

Marie | Lia | Kat | Fadwa | CW | YOU

Don’t feel obligated to do this!

If you want to do this tag (whether I’ve tagged you directly or not), but don’t really know how to make aesthetics: stay tuned! I’ve got a tutorial coming this Tuesday (you may be thinking: Michelle, why didn’t you get that up BEFORE this tag? Well… I was really excited about this tag and wanted to post it… So… Sorry?)

Are any of these books/characters/ships among your favourites as well? Which ones would you have picked? Let me know in the comments!

A Riordan Book with Second Book Syndrome? It’s More Likely Than You Think

Genre: YA // Fantasy
Series: The Trials of Apollo #2
Goodreads rating: 4.32
My rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Zeus has punished his son Apollo—god of the sun, music, archery, poetry, and more—by casting him down to earth in the form of a gawky, acne-covered sixteen-year-old mortal named Lester. The only way Apollo can reclaim his rightful place on Mount Olympus is by restoring several Oracles that have gone dark. What is affecting the Oracles, and how can Apollo do anything about them without his powers?

After experiencing a series of dangerous—and frankly, humiliating—trials at Camp Half-Blood, Apollo must now leave the relative safety of the demigod training ground and embark on a hair-raising journey across North America. Fortunately, what he lacks in godly graces he’s gaining in new friendships—with heroes who will be very familiar to fans of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Heroes of Olympus series. Come along for what promises to be a harrowing, hilarious, and haiku-filled ride. . . (Goodreads)

As I was writing down my thoughts in list format so that I wouldn’t forget them, I realised… I quite liked my list. Therefore I decided that it’s time for another list review

💛 Not as good as the first one

💛 Not much happened??

💛 Second book syndrome?? A Rick Riordan book?? It’s more likely than you think

💛 That’s really how it felt though, not much happened, by the end of the book I didn’t feel like the story had progressed that much. So all in all, it did feel like second book syndrome

💛 Still love Apollo though

💛 His past relationship with a man is a huge part of the plot!!!

💛 Can people stop being so mean to him pls give my boy a break

💛 His friendship with Meg!! I died and cried just aaah

💛 It’s just so beautiful?? They love each other so much and they keep on going for each other????

💛 Like these two will go to the end of the world for each other??

💛 Like Apollo who used to only care about himself would willingly sacrifice himsef to save her?? My heart?? Can’t handle it??

💛 The haikus are still enjoyable

💛 Leo and Calypso!! And becoming friends with Apollo!!

💛 Though I do wish we could’ve gotten the story from their POV as well, as now it didn’t feel like they played a big part

💛 Apollo and Calypso being clueless ex-immortals together (though Calypso more so since Apollo kept up with pop culture)

💛 Lesbians who played a big role and were important to the plot!! Spoiler (but a good one): they have a happy ending!!!

💛 More Roman history and myths!! While you’d think it could get a bit difficult keeping up with all these characters, creatures and myths, Rick Riordan never info dumps and makes it feel like your head will explode

💛 Cameos!! From old favourites!! Whether they actually appear or are mentioned

💛 I loved a lot about it, it’s just that it dragged a bit and it didn’t feel like much happened?

💛 All in all it was enjoyable, but I had high expectations since I adored the first one

Have you read The Dark Prophecy yet? What did you think? Oh and did you know that apparently it’s going to be five books?? I thought it was a trilogy! Did it change or was it always meant to be five books and did I get confused because Magnus Chase is a trilogy haha

The Weekly Hufflepuff #48

*really losing inspiration for intro’s for these posts send help* OH I CHANGED MY LAYOUT A BIT I CAN TALK ABOUT THAT. So yeah I created a new header as I was getting a bit tired of the old one and wanted more colour. I also created my own social media icons which was a pain but I like the result so it’s worth it. I also changed my ‘meet the blogger’ thingie as I was getting tired of my old picture. Also this one fits the blog’s name better haha

I finished The Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan and well… I’m a bit disappointed? I absolutely loved the first one, but this one? I dunno I nee dto gather my thoughts so I can write a review, right now I’m not sure yet how I feel.

I finished my second year this Tuesday which is crazy. I’ll be a thirdyear already this September?? What?? BUT ALSO SUMMER VACATION. Boy do I need it. Looking back this term was pretty fun, it just wasn’t fun that my friend and I had to redo an assignment from last term. BUT WE PASSED THIS TIME. I passed all my classes from this year so naturally I’m happy.

To celebrate the end of the year my friend and I went to cat cafe Kopjes, which was fun though the cats weren’t really in the mood to be petted or play. I think it was a bit too hot for them haha. Most of them were up high sleeping. We only got to pet two cats which made us really sad haha.

This cutie was sleeping until I decided that I needed to pet it. I still feel super guilty for waking it (that second picture is how it looked at me when I softly touched it). My heart guys, I feel so bad (it let us pet it though it was sooo soft

I’m gonna move there and live among the kitties btw

ALSO WHO ELSE WATCHED DOCTOR WHO LAST NIGHT AND IS BITTER I SWEAR THEY BETTER FIX THIS NEXT WEEK

Since my last wrap up I posted:

I haven’t read any blogposts this week (or the previous weeks) so I have nothing to share for the ‘elsewhere on the internet’ part. Hopefully next week!

And that’s a wrap! What have you guys been up to? Any posts (written by you or others) you think I HAVE to read? What have you been reading? Let me know in the comments!

Mini Reviews Because I Forgot All About These Books

A lot of the times I end up not reviewing books at all, because I don’t have time to review them and by the time I do, I’ve forgotten all about them. I’ve written mini reviews before since I didn’t remember enough to write full reviews, but… sometimes it’s just too late and I barely remember it and if I were to review it – mini or not – I’d be like ‘it was fun read it’ or ‘it wasn’t fun don’t read it.’ Not very helpful, am I right? So let’s review these books shortly before I forget all about them (I know the title of this post says I already forgot them, but I meant I forgot I read them and need to review them woops)

Some of these I might review in more detail later on, but I’ll include them just in case I don’t have the time to do that. That way I’ll still have shared some of my thoughts

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

A.k.a. I still don’t understand why everyone loves The Darkling??

But what I definitely don’t understand is why people ship him and Alina. That would be an incredibly abusive ship?? Not that Mal is any better yikes. Definitely understand all the love for Nikolai though

Genre: YA // Fantasy
Series: The Grisha #2
Goodreads rating: 4.09
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Beautiful Broken Things by Sara Barnard

A.k.a. I meant to review this in December but?? I don’t know what happened. I really loved this one. Not to call myself beautiful but after reading it I was the title guys. Suzanne was an amazing character and in some ways I related a bit too much to her (which was a bit triggering). She’s written so well. There’s also lots of friendship scenes that I love and it felt so realistic.

Genre: YA // Contemporary
Goodreads rating: 3.38
My rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Summary: Best friends Caddy and Rosie are inseparable. Their differences have brought them closer, but as she turns sixteen Caddy begins to wish she could be a bit more like Rosie – confident, funny and interesting. Then Suzanne comes into their lives: beautiful, damaged, exciting and mysterious, and things get a whole lot more complicated. As Suzanne’s past is revealed and her present begins to unravel, Caddy begins to see how much fun a little trouble can be. But the course of both friendship and recovery is rougher than either girl realises, and Caddy is about to learn that downward spirals have a momentum of their own (Goodreads).

Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan

A.k.a. I meant to review this as well but in January instead and school happened. I loved this one so much though. It had everything I loved about the first one, and fixed the problems (like the pace and how Magnus and Sam felt too much like Percy and Annabeth to me) I had with it. I fell in love with all the characters, new (ALEX!!!!) and old, great storyline, fun side quests…

Genre: YA // Fantasy // LGBTQIAP+
Series: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #2
Goodreads rating: 4.37
My rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit by Jaye Robin Brown

Another one I meant to review (I should just stop saying this shouldn’t I? Because so far I meant to review all of these except Siege and Storm – honestly writing a mini review for this was the best idea I had in a while lol consindering even after finishing it I barely had anything to say about it. I don’t know if you guys remember my attempt to review Shadow and Bone but… I didn’t want to repeat that haha)

ANYWAY. This was a cute, fun, light read with a little too much drama for my taste. Remember how I ranted about ‘underrated’ book tropes that I hate? How I ranted about miscommunciation because for the love of God please please just talk?? Yes this book is… well maybe not full with it, but a lot of times the problems could’ve been easily solved if Jo had just talked. Not just ‘a lot of problems’, the biggest conflict in the entire book could’ve been prevented that way.

I just find this trope too annoying to love a book, but it was definitely fun! The romance was adorable and I really liked some of Jo’s new friends (with the exception of one, you’ll know which one if you’ve read it). It’s also great to see religion and sexuality handled in such a positive light.

Genre: YA // Contemporary // LGBTQIAP+
Goodreads rating: 3.89
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Summary: It’s going to take a miracle for Joanna Gordon to get through senior year.

Despite being the daughter of a well-known radio evangelist, Jo has never hidden the fact that she’s gay, and her dad has always supported her. But that was back in Atlanta. Now her dad the reverend has married wife number three, and they’ve all moved to small-town Rome, Georgia. When Jo’s dad asks her to lie low for the rest of the year in the hopes that it will help him and his new wife settle in, Jo reluctantly agrees.

Although when God closes a closet door, he opens a window. Everything becomes so easy for Jo once she rebrands herself as a straight girl. No one gives her odd looks. Her new stepfamily likes her. She even gets in with the popular crowd.

And that’s how she meets Mary Carlson, the ultimate temptation. Even though Jo knows this girl is completely off-limits, she just can’t get her out of her mind. But Jo couldn’t possibly think of breaking her promise to her dad. Even if Jo’s starting to fall for Mary Carlson. Even if there’s a chance Mary Carlson might be interested in her, too. Right?

Lord, have mercy. Jo’s in for one hell of a year.

Princess Princess Ever After by Katie O’Neill

This one really deserves a post on its own, but like I said, I’ll include those here as well because I might never get to them. It’s a super cute comic book in which princesses save other princesses (and themselves!) and  fall in love and it’s just super cute.

Genre: Comic // Children’s (though seriously enjoyable for all ages) // Fantasy // LGBTQIAP+
Goodreads rating: 4.18
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley

Definitely hope to write a full review for this one, but if not: one heck of a ride. It’s very emotional, might be triggering to some, addresses serious issues and complex characters. I’m still not sure if I even ship the romance? It’s definitely a book that stays with you.

Genre: YA // Historical // LGBTQIAP+
Goodreads rating: 4.09
My rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Summary: It’s 1959. The battle for civil rights is raging. And it’s Sarah Dunbar’s first day of school, as one of the first black students at the previously all-white Jefferson High. No one wants Sarah there. Not the Governor. Not the teachers. And certainly not the students – especially Linda Hairston, daughter of the town’s most ardent segregationist. Sarah and Linda have every reason to despise each other. But as a school project forces them to spend time together, the less their differences seem to matter. And Sarah and Linda start to feel something they’ve never felt before. Something they’re both determined ignore. Because it’s one thing to be frightened by the world around you – and another thing altogether when you’re terrified of what you feel inside

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie

I’ve wanted to read something my Agatha Christie for a long time now and… I’m not sure if I’m disappointed or not? I guess it was a fun who-dunnit, but it was also a bit boring? Also use of the n-word and anti-semitism which really put me off and makes me question my rating.

Genre: Detective
Series: Hercule Poirot #1
Goodreads rating: 3.98
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐

I suddenly feel so productive now that I’ve reviewed these! Have you read any of these? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!

The School Book Tag

Thank you Eve for tagging me! If you’re not familiar with Eve’s awesome blog go check it out now. I haven’t done a tag in ages, but since I’m trying to get back into scheduling posts, what better way to start than with tags? SO LET’S DO THIS.

MATHS

a book that has two characters who equal perfection

© Viria

© Viria

Hmm what (bro)tp to go with today? You know, I haven’t gushed about Percabeth in a long time and they remain one of my favourite book couples. They have a healthy, cute relationship and the build-up was A+

BIOLOGY

a book I would like to dissect

I dunno Les Mis maybe? GUYS DID I MENTION I FINALLY, AFTER FOUR YEARS OR SO OF IT BEING ON MY SHELF, STARTED LES MIS? Cause I did. I’m only like ten pages in but liking it so far. Since I’m not that far in yet I don’t know if I would like to dissect it, but since it’s huge and has a lot of characters I think it would be a great choice to dissect *nods*

PHYSICS

a book with a lot of potential

I’m going with a book I haven’t read yet. There are SO many though, but I recently bought Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley and it sounds amazing. Definitely has a lot of potential so I hope it won’t let me down.

CHEMISTRY

a book I really bonded to

The Perks of Being a Wallflower hands down. I definitely bonded to Harry Potter as well, but I felt that was a bit of a cliché answer haha. I relate so much to Charlie and I love this book so much. Damn, I need a reread.

ENGLISH

a book that should be a modern classic

Aaaah okay I don’t like giving the same answer twice but… The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It is so well-written and such an important book. It definitely should be a modern classic.

P.E.

a book that I raced to the finish with

While I didn’t finish it within a day or anything (because school yay) the last book that I raced to finish was Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor (which I really need to review).

MUSIC

a book that reminds me of a song

Hmm I’m not sure? I do have songs that reminds me of books, but not really the other way around. So I’m going to be boring and not choose an answer here

I’ll be tagging: Lia | Kwante | Hannah

Don’t feel obligated to do this!

What book reminds YOU of a song? And what’s your favourite subject and why? Let me know in the comments!

Best Books of 2016

This year I read 147 books. That sounds like a lot, but a lot of those books are manga and comic books. Not that I don’t count those, but those are really quick reads (at least for me), otherwise I never would’ve been able to read this much haha. But what were my favourites this year? In no order, except for the first one:

Timekeeper by Tara Sim

Hands down my favourite book of the year. I loved it to pieces and I can’t wait for the sequel. I loved the characters, the worldbuilding, the writing, the relationships (including the romance of course), the mystery… Just everything. Read my review and listen to my playlist here.

The Ask and the Answer/Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness

If I had to choose which one of these two is better, I’d probably go with The Ask and the Answer. Don’t ask me for any arguments, because I read these two at the start of the year and until I went through Goodreads I didn’t even remember that I read them this year. It feels like ages ago.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

img_0014

Same with Simon. Did I seriously read this only this year?? This book was so cute and Simon is so relatable. It didn’t blow me away, but I might reread it next year and we’ll see. Cinder didn’t blow me away at first either and now it’s one of my favourite books. Read my review here.

Stars Above by Marissa Meyer

starsabove

This reminds me that I need to get my hands on Heartless. Also Wires and Nerves is almost out!! But I should talk about this book instead. If you’re a fan of The Lunar Chronicles and haven’t read this one yet, I really recommend it. I felt like I got to know the characters a little bit better (even though I think the main books already do a superb job at that) and it was just a lot of fun, especially the last story. Read my review here.

The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This book was just so much fun and hilarious. I doubt there will ever be a year where there won’t be a Riordan book on my best of list, unless he didn’t publish anything. I already loved Apollo, but Uncle Rick gave him character development and actually made him likeable (I mean, I loved him before but if I were to know him in real life I’d despise him haha). Read my review here.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

thedreamthieves

I finally read the entire series this year and I really get what the hype is all about! I don’t know which book would be my favourite and I haven’t reviewed any of them either woops.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

I have this edition but I'm too lazy to take a picture of it woops

I have this edition but I’m too lazy to take a picture of it woops

This one was definitely a surprise! I started reading it and was quite bored, but at some point the pace picked up and I loved it so much. It was so sweet yet heartbreaking. It also felt very real and I loved seeing Anne grow up. I really need to read the rest of the series.

I’ve been meaning to review this one but I haven’t gotten to it yet. This one is written entirely through poems and while I didn’t know what to expect at first, it worked so well. It made me feel so much closer to the protagonists and so much more emotional.

We Awaken by Calista Lynne

I may have only given this book 3.5 stars, but I loved it a lot. It’s still on my mind even now after having finished it weeks ago. I just love the fact that both the protagonist and her love interest are ace and how that’s explored and how beautiful their relationship is. Read my review here.

Orange

I meant to review this manga this Summer when I read it, but I never got to it. I read it in one sitting (okay there aren’t that many chapters but still) and I can’t even explain why I loved it so much. It just hit me real hard and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Ms. Marvel

I don’t care whether you like superheroes or not okay? Read Ms. Marvel. Okay words are not working with me. I just don’t know where to start. Okay hopefully I’ll do better once I try to properly review this which I am planning on doing. JUST READ IT.

Lumberjanes

READ LUMBERJANES TOO (okay you should read everything on this list but). It has a super diverse cast (two!! trans characters!!!!), it’s all about friendship (though there’s an adorable same-sex relationship too), it’s very strange and magical, it’s hilarious, the characters are very lovable and just READ IT.

Fictional Characters as Olympians

So Fadwa had the amazing idea to do a list of her favourite characters as Olympians, and in the end she turned it into a tag by tagging several bloggers. Thank you so much for tagging me Fadwa! Also if you’re not familiar with her awesome blog yet, go check it out. I couldn’t think of any character for the ‘cycling’ category, so I replaced it with ‘swimming’.

SHOOTING

It took me a while to think of a character who had ever used a gun, so when I finally thought of Scarlet Benoit I felt stupid. I’m sorry for not thinking of you sooner Scar, I love you.

MARATHON

Todd Hewitt and Viola Eade. Slightly cheating here by choosing two characters, but these two must have great stamina after the events of the Chaos Walking trilogy and I assume could run really fast.

TAEKWANDO

My first thought was Annabeth Chase (there are way too many Riordan characters here haha). I don’t know if she knows taekwando, but she can fight so I’m choosing her.

GYMNASTICS

I can see Luna Lovegood being a gymnast? Especially a rhythmic gymnast.

ARCHERY

For this one I have to go with the God of Archery, Apollo himself. Though if he were to compete it would be a little unfair, so maybe his son Will Solace would be better? Okay let’s not think TOO hard about this haha

EQUESTRIAN (DRESSAGE)

Hazel Levesque, though not on Arion since he’s the fastest horse on the planet (if you haven’t read the Heroes of Olympus series, he’s unnaturally fast) that would be unfair.

FENCING

Celaena Sardothien is the first to come to mind. She’s great with a sword, so I think she’d be pretty good at fencing too.

SWIMMING

I have to go with Percy Jackson of course. Maybe a bit unfair since he’s a son of Poseidon, but hey I’m letting Apollo enter as well, so why not. Plus in The Hidden Oracle he’s on the swim team so hey, who knows maybe the Olympics are in Percy’s future

I tag whoever wants to do this!

Review: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESGenre: Middle Grade/YA (not sure?? Suitable for both though) | Fantasy
Series: The Trials of Apollo #1
Goodreads rating: 4.40
My rating:  ★★★★★

summary

How do you punish an immortal?

By making him human.

After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus’s favour.

But Apollo has many enemies – gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood (Goodreads).

review

Definitely one of my favourite books of the year, which I’m so glad about. While I enjoyed Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer last year, it didn’t really blow me away. The Hidden Oracle on the other hand was such a joy to read! I loved that a big part of the book took place at Camp, which didn’t just feel familiar but was also kind of new because usually the characters leave Camp pretty quickly to go on a quest.

Apollo had always been one of my favourite Olympians, because he’s hilarious. I can see why some people might dislike him, but his character development in the book was amazing. I won’t go into it too much, of course, because

But it was one of my favourite parts of the book, besides the humour, the haiku chapter titles, seeing familiar faces, the friendships, Apollo bonding with his kids… And of course a certain couple…

Okay basically I just loved it a lot. Also that ending. Seriously if you love Uncle Rick’s books just read this. I can’t wait for the next one.

This is a really short review for several reasons: 1) I should’ve reviewed this sooner, but I thought I already had? 2) I don’t want to go into too many details and spoil you 3) mostly the first reason though

Have you read The Hidden Oracle yet? What did you think of it? Are you excited for the next one as  well? Let me know in the comments!
