THE ORIGINAL QUESTIONS

1. If you could meet anyone from throughout history, who and why?

There are so many people I’d love to meet, but Oscar Wilde is probably at the top of my list. I just love him so much, both as a person and a writer and sometimes it really bums me out that we live in different time periods.

2. What is your favorite book and why?

If I had to choose one book (and not series) it would be The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I just can’t help it. This book and Charlie resonate with me so much. It makes me feel things that not many books do and just fgkjdxgx

3. Who is your favorite fiction character from any medium and why?

Oh boy do I really have to choose? I have so many! Though right now I love all the kids on Andi Mack so I’m going to go with them because I love my babies

CÁTIA’S QUESTIONS

1. What book have you read that made you want to travel to the place in the book?

So many! Obviously Harry Potter made me want to go to Hogwarts, Anna and the French Kiss made me want to go to Paris, The Heroes of Olympus series made me want to go to Greece and revisit Rome (I mean I always want to go back to Rome but) and there are so many others! I just want to go to so many places and books set there (and in other places) just make me want to go even more.

2. If you could start your blog journey all over again what would you change or do differently? Would you have started earlier?

Part of me does wish I had started earlier, but things would have been so different. I would’ve been a different person, less aware of certain issues going around in the world, I had a different reading taste and well, I think this blog would’ve been very different and maybe not in a good way. Also I may not have met the people I’ve met now, because things would’ve gone differently and we might not have stumbled upon each other’s blogs – the idea alone makes me sad!

If I could start over I would be more organised – in planning and scheduling posts, my blog’s design, tags, categories, features etc. I also would’ve gotten involved in the (book) blogging community right away, as at first I had no idea there even was a community.

3. What is your biggest dream and how are you working on its realization?

Becoming a writer and um… by writing? Though not much? Being a writer is my biggest dream, but I also want to be a journalist and since that’s what I’m studying well… I have to focus on that throughout the school year. I’m really excited for this summer vacation so that I can get back into writing though!

MY QUESTIONS

Almost forgot these woops haha

  1. What is your favourite book you read so far this year?
  2. What is a song that you can listen over and over to?
  3. If you could turn one book into a tv show/movie, which one and how do you picture it?

What about you guys? If you could meet anyone from throughout history, who would you choose? And what is your biggest dream? Let me know in the comments!

The School Book Tag

Thank you Eve for tagging me! If you’re not familiar with Eve’s awesome blog go check it out now. I haven’t done a tag in ages, but since I’m trying to get back into scheduling posts, what better way to start than with tags? SO LET’S DO THIS.

MATHS

a book that has two characters who equal perfection

© Viria

© Viria

Hmm what (bro)tp to go with today? You know, I haven’t gushed about Percabeth in a long time and they remain one of my favourite book couples. They have a healthy, cute relationship and the build-up was A+

BIOLOGY

a book I would like to dissect

I dunno Les Mis maybe? GUYS DID I MENTION I FINALLY, AFTER FOUR YEARS OR SO OF IT BEING ON MY SHELF, STARTED LES MIS? Cause I did. I’m only like ten pages in but liking it so far. Since I’m not that far in yet I don’t know if I would like to dissect it, but since it’s huge and has a lot of characters I think it would be a great choice to dissect *nods*

PHYSICS

a book with a lot of potential

I’m going with a book I haven’t read yet. There are SO many though, but I recently bought Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley and it sounds amazing. Definitely has a lot of potential so I hope it won’t let me down.

CHEMISTRY

a book I really bonded to

The Perks of Being a Wallflower hands down. I definitely bonded to Harry Potter as well, but I felt that was a bit of a cliché answer haha. I relate so much to Charlie and I love this book so much. Damn, I need a reread.

ENGLISH

a book that should be a modern classic

Aaaah okay I don’t like giving the same answer twice but… The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It is so well-written and such an important book. It definitely should be a modern classic.

P.E.

a book that I raced to the finish with

While I didn’t finish it within a day or anything (because school yay) the last book that I raced to finish was Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor (which I really need to review).

MUSIC

a book that reminds me of a song

Hmm I’m not sure? I do have songs that reminds me of books, but not really the other way around. So I’m going to be boring and not choose an answer here

I’ll be tagging: Lia | Kwante | Hannah

Blogsterdam: The Amsterdam Book Tag

YOU CAN STILL SEND IN QUESTIONS FOR THE BLOGSTERDAM Q&A

This month’s Blogsterdam will combine Amsterdam and books (actually just like last month’s since then I talked about my favourite bookstore) in a tag I created!

cheesyread-2

Seriously guys it’s not funny how many cheese stores there are in the same street. DEFY THE STEREOTYPES AMSTERDAM. Anyway, my choice for this category is The Selection series, which can be quite cheesy but still ‘delicious’. Well the first three anyway, since I still haven’t read the rest.

canalparade

I’m torn between Carry On and Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda.

annefrank

Since I’m very emotional, a lot of books make me cry, so let’s just go with the most recent one, which was my reread of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Yep, that book does make me very emotional so a good choice for this one.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

That awkward moment you realise THEY SHOULD’VE BEEN HORIZONTAL BECAUSE THIS IS THE FRENCH FLAG And the idiot of the year award goes to…

museumsquare

For this category you can go with fiction or non-fiction, I’m going with non-fiction since I want to choose De Kunst van Het Woord: Zijn Mooiste Brieven (literal translation: The Art of the Word: His Most Beautiful Letters), which is a book about Van Gogh and contains, like the title says, his most beautiful letters. I haven’t finished this yet since I haven’t been in the mood to read non-fiction lately, but I love Van Gogh so I’ll continue soon. It hasn’t been translated into English I believe (at least I can’t find an English edition on Goodreads), but it might be in the works.

PIGEONS

I have a love-hate relationship with pigeons. On one hand I find them cute, on the other I find them annoying, especially at Dam Square where they tend to accidentally almost fly at your face. I found pretty much every main character in The Crown’s Game annoying to be honest (Pasha was bearable until the end). Review to come soon!

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag A.K.A. What Happened to 2016 Tag

Thank you Jess for tagging me! Go check out her blog if you haven’t already because it’s gorgeous

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2016

This used to be Stars Above, but then I read Monsters of Men. It was an amazing rollercoaster and definitely didn’t disappoint. I havent’ reviewed any of the books in the trilogy, and I’m not sure I will. I just don’t know how to put my love for these books into words.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2016

I’m going with The Ask and the Answer, because apparently I haven’t even read that many sequels this year (and Stars Above doesn’t really count, since only the last story takes place after Winter).

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

Woops still haven’t read Lady Midnight

I kid you not I’ve been at the bookstore, stared at it, and picked up other books. I’ve kind of lost my excitement and there are other books I’d rather read. But I still want to read it! It just isn’t a priority anymore (I seriously don’t know what happened. Like I was so excited before it came out and then it did and I just…)

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

To be honest I’m not sure what books are coming out this year. I’m really not keeping up, because I’ve been really busy with school and now I figure I’ll just see when books come out when everyone in the community starts reading them lol. BUT I really can’t wait to read Heartless. Alice in Wonderland and written by Marissa Meyer? Yes please *grabby hands*

5. Biggest disappointment

a thousand nightsIT’S SO PRETTY. BOTH ON THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE. BUT NOT STORY WISE. I was incredibly bored during this one. I love fairy tale retellings, but this one? Nope nope nope. Read my review here. Really wouldn’t recommend this one. BUT there are people out there who really love it, so that said if you’re interested in it still check it out.

6. Biggest surprise

Crystal Magic by Madeline Freeman. I got it for free on Amazon and the previous free e-books I had read weren’t that great, so my expectations were really, really low. But I really enjoyed this one! Read my review here.

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

I think it’s a tie between Becky Albertali and Maggie Stiefvater, though I’ve met Becky at YalfestNL and she was so cute and lovely so I’m leaning towards her

8. Newest fictional crush

I’m afraid to say that there’s no new addition to my fictional boy harem

9. Newest favourite characterimg_0014

Definitely Simon Spiers! Also one of my favourite protagonist *nods* I mean he’s a Potterhead so how could I not love him (yes I’m biased so what ssh) Read my review here.

10. Book that made you cry

I reread The Perks of Being a Wallflower which made me cry again

11. Book that made you happy

starsaboveStars Above. Especially the last story. If you’ve read it you know what I’m talking about. It was just perfect and put a smile on my face. I loved seeing the gang all together again. The story of Cinder and Kai’s first meeting from Kai’s POV also put a big goofy smile on my face though. Read my review here.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

I got Harry Potter Film Wizardry for my birthday and that definitely qualifies. It’s gorgeous inside and out. While I haven’t read it yet, I definitely recommend it

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I don’t have any specific books really. I just want to read all the unread books on my shelves (not going to happen. Like I’m going to finish Les Mis hahaha. I really need to finally read that)

14. Favourite Book Community Member (Blogger, Booktuber and Bookstagrammer)

I assume this has to be someone you discovered this year? Then I’m choosing (sounds like I’m choosing a Pokemon haha – SPEAKING OF WHICH BY THE TIME THIS IS PUBLISHED I’D BETTER HAVE POKEMON GO) Liam from Hey Ashers! His reviews are brilliant – not just well-written and with good points, but also hilarious.

15. Tag! Who’s It?

Fadwa | Evi | Zin | Annemieke | Samantha | Marie | Joan | Emma

Don’t feel obligated to do this!

How was the first half year of 2016 reading wise for you? What is your favourite and worst book so far? Any answers we have in common? Let me know in the comments!

Book Courtship Tag

Quite some time ago I was tagged by Josie from Josie’s Book Corner. Thank you and sorry it took me so long! Because when I say ‘quite some time ago’ I mean like a year woops. Fun fact: I had already started this post, but then forgot or something? I don’t know what happened. Anyway don’t forget to check out her amazing blog!

Phase One: Initial Attraction: A book you bought because of the cover

*laughs maniacally as she looks at all the pretty books on her shelves*

I mean, the cover is the first thing you see, so of course a lot of books’ covers drew me in. BUT! I do not buy a book solely because of it’s cover. I grab something because of the cover, then if the blurb sounds good, I’ll buy it.

a thousand nights

Sadly, though it sounded good, it wasn’t.

Phase Two: First Impressions: A book you got because of the summary

Pretty much every book ever haha.

Phase Three: Sweet Talk: A book with great writing

Thankfully I know quite a few for this category, but I’ll go with The Book Thief, because it is one of my favourite stand-alones (second favourite after The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and it’s beautifully written. Sadly I have the movie cover so it’s not that pretty…

ONE DAY I’LL OWN A PRETTY EDITION.

Phase Four: First Date: A first book of a series which made you want to pursue the rest of the series

Oh gosh so many boooks. Actually not that many. Of course I could go with the expected answer that is Harry Potter, but let’s go with Percy Jackson. I immediately bought the rest of the series when I finished The Lightning Thief.

Phase Five: Late night phone calls: A book that kept you up all night long

Definitely The Ask and the Answer. Not all night long though. I never stay awake that long haha.

Phase Six: Always on my mind: A book that you could not stop thinking about

carry on

I couldn’t stop thinking about Carry On for a while after I finished it. I was just so high on Snowbaz feels.

Phase Seven: Getting Physical: A book in which you love the way it feels

Oooh again every book ever. I just love the way books feel and I always pet them.

Phase Eight:  Meeting the Parents: A book in which you would recommend to your friends and family

I was going to say Harry Potter, but then I saw the next question. I’m going to go with The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is my favourite standalone. I’d honestly throw this book at everyone if I didn’t have a no-throwing-books-policy.

Phase Nine: Thinking about the future: A book or series that you know you’ll re-read many times in the future

Does it surprise anyone when I say Harry Potter

Phase Ten: Share the love! Here’s who I am tagging

The Jouska | Holly | Victoria | Liam | Carrianna | Aria

Don’t feel obligated to do this!

What book did you recently purchase because of it’s cover? And which one would you throw at everyone you ever met? Let me know in the comments!

The Weekly Hufflepuff #24

*insert awkward introduction* *insert usual ‘I can’t believe February is almost over already!’* Siriusly I have no idea what to write here this time

whatiread

I finished my reread of The Perks of Being A Wallflower and was even more emotional this time.

I started rereading Cinder. I guess I’m in a reread mood haha. I just looked at my bookshelves and Cinder basically spoke to me: ‘REREAD ME REREAD ME’

personal

While I still managed to have three posts up last week, this week was less successful sadly. I was very busy with school, not to mention tired, so while I could’ve made time, I just didn’t want to blog. I was too tired and didn’t want to force myself. I’m still behind on reading blogposts, but I did read quite a few on Friday during class! (I wasn’t slacking off, I promise. My task was done so I had a lot of free time)

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before, but this term we’re making radio. I hate the sound of my own voice so I’m struggling with that haha. Last week we had to make our own items and went to the studio to practice with an already made script. This week we made our very own script and used our own items, which was fun but I was quickly done with my task so I felt like I was sitting there for nothing. It was pretty cool listening to our own broadcast though.

Today I went to the Neighbour Food Market to write a report on it for school. It was just a lucky bonus that I got to eat haha. We will definitely go there again (it’s once every month) because there was so much food that I didn’t get to try! I mean, I could try it because so far everyone we met gave us a sample of something, but my stomach. I’m actually sitting here with a hot water bottle. I ate too much

what I posted-2

I reviewed this week’s episode of Shadowhunters. Hopefully I’ll post more next week

elsewhere

So how was your week? Did you eat any good food? Read any good books? Let me know in the comments!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Review

the perks of being a wallflowerGenre: Contemporary
Category: YA
Goodreads rating: 4.20
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Summary (2020)

“I walk around the school hallways and look at the people. I look at the teachers and wonder why they’re here. Not in a mean way. In a curious way. It’s like looking at all the students and wondering who’s had their heart broken that day…or wondering who did the heart breaking and wondering why.”

Charlie is a freshman. And while he’s not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it. Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But Charlie can’t stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.

Review (2020)

How do I even start this review? I’m so tempted to just write ‘afgagfhjag just read it’ and then insert a lot of gifs that sum up my feelings, but that wouldn’t really be a good review, would it?

I’ve wanted to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower ever since I saw the film two years ago. I have no idea why I kept putting it off for so long. Maybe because I loved the film so much, that I was afraid that the book would be a disappointment? I did expect to love the book – and thank God I did.

I seriously can’t put my love for this book into words. It’s just so perfect. It all just felt so real. Most of all, Charlie felt real. During the entire book I had this big urge to hug him. He went through so much, but thankfully he has his family and most importantly his friends to get him through the day. I love how much he develops through the book. I’m not going into any details, since that would involve spoilers. Even though I didn’t go through the same things Charlie did, I could relate to Charlie a lot. Which made the urge to hug him even bigger. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to hug a fictional character this bad.

There were so many inspirational quotes, not just the famous ones ‘We accept the love we think we deserve’ and ‘And in that moment, I swear we were infinite’, but so many more. I’m going to share one with you guys, because otherwise I’d just quote the entire book (slight exaggeration):

“Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn’t stop for anybody.”

The best thing about this book (besides the character development, the characters, the relationships, the quotes and basically everything haha) is that the story is written as a series of letters from Charlie to ‘Dear friend’, which makes it feel like you’re Charlie’s ‘dear friend’. It made me feel a lot more involved, like I was part of the story.

At the end of the book I was definitely crying. Through the entire book I had moments where I teared up, but at the end the tears were really flowing. I did laugh as well. Don’t think it’s a book where you constantly cry with no laugh or tiny smile. Don’t consider not reading the book, because you don’t like sad books or don’t like to cry. You might not even cry like I did; I’m a very emotional person.

Everyone should read this book. Everyone. I personally believe that Perks is one of those books that changes you. I could go on and on about everything. I haven’t told you about the characters (they’re awesome and real and just perfect) and so many other things, but I think you should just read the book for yourself. I don’t want to spoil too much (not to mention this post would be way to long).

Ps. I’m going to see The Maze Runner tonight!!

Pps. It’s also the fifth day of the Falling for Autumn Read-a-Thon. I’ve changed my goal to finish two books, haha. I love Jane Austen, but for some reason I can’t finish her work in such a short time.

If you’ve read The Perks, what did you think of it? Are you planning on watching The Maze Runner? Let me know in the comments!
