Review: The Dark of Twilight by Kate Danley

Genre: Ya | fantasy
Series: Twilight Shifters #1
Goodreads rating: 3.74
My rating:  ★★

Aein always longed to be a member of Lord Arnkell’s army, ever since she was a child working in the stronghold’s kitchen. When that day finally comes and she is sent to patrol the border’s swamp with fellow warrior, Lars, it seems like her dream has come true. But something has followed her home. When Lord Arnkell’s wedding is interrupted by a werewolf attack, the dream shifts into a nightmare… and Aein is the only one awake (Goodreads).

Oh my God this book. Okay so it isn’t that bad. I mean, I’ve read worse. But it wasn’t good either.

We’re continually told things instead of shown them. For example, Aein has to patrol the border with Lars, who we’re told she becomes good friends with. The author skips their journey to the border during which they bond, and just tells us that they’re now really close, instead of showing us some of their moments. I don’t want to be told that they were joking around, I want to read a scene in which they are.

Like the summary above mentions, the wedding is interrupted by a werewolf attack, which no one is prepared for because, I quote: ‘no one would bring weapons to a wedding feast’. NOT EVEN KNIGHTS?! HOW STUPID ARE YOU PEOPLE?! (still not over this. I mean every person who on every other day would want the Lord and/or his new wife dead will just be like: ‘nah man, it’s their wedding. I’ll wait until tomorrow.’ Not)

Speaking of the werewolves: I still have no idea what really happened. I mean, I do, but I don’t. This is hard because I don’t want to spoil anyone (even though I wouldn’t recommend it, doesn’t mean you wouldn’t enjoy it after all!). Thing is, I don’t get how it works. I know how the werewolves were turned, but I don’t get why one group turns into a wolf at night and the other at day. Maybe this was explained and I just don’t remember since it’s been over a month and the book wasn’t very memorable, but I was just very confused.

My favourite piece of writing has to be: ‘white hot tears rolled out her eyes’. Why are her tears white and not transparent

The villain was very stereotypical and one-dimensional. And to top it all of there’s insta love and a love triangle that makes no sense and came out of nowhere. My reaction when one of the ‘love interests’ – seriously he was not even a love interest until this moment – declares his undying love for her – because ay why not she’s a special snowflake everyone should fall in love with her – was

Have you read this? I think it’s still up for free on Amazon (only reason why I downloaded it in the first place lol) so if you’re interested check it out! If you end up disliking it like me it at least won’t be a waste of money. Oh and important question: do you cry white tears?
